  1. Brings to mind some years ago when a man in this region (was he Thai ?) wanted to get rid of his wife and put a bomb aboard a plane. It worked. But that was before all the terrorist precautions they have nowadays. How good is security at KL ?

One more point: If those using the stolen passports were aboard and involved then that would make it a suicide mission. I suppose those guys actually did board.

I'm in the process of applying for a new passport myself (UK) and they say that I do not have to return my old passport for cancellation - they will simply electronically cancel it so it cannot be used. I suspect that would just stop it being used at places that have good electronic security like in the west - not around here.

  2. I'll be earning about 170,000/month plus allowances. Not sure about the social security but lets ignore it for now

Allowances are also calculated into the taxable income so lets for the sake of t round you up to 200k.

As a single man without any dependents you will be paying about Bt45,000 per month n taxes.

You should start an RMF and/or LTF (Retirement mutual funds and Long term funds) accounts at the bank when you open a bank account here. That would drastically reduce your tax burden. Don't be pushed to also take life insurance - that's not such a good deal, and they are on commission to sell them.

  3. Assuming you meant Thai songs, Khun Suntaree's restaurant (Huan Suntaree) a little bit away from the city on the river) offers good food, nice ambience, and nightly performance (around 9) by a genuine star. The music begins around seven or seven-thirty and is all of the one or two guitar with singers of traditional songs. I can't offer directions but taxis and tuk tuk's will know it. Many other restaurants offer similar formats, albeit without the name recognition.

Can anybody tell me exactly where this is ?

  4. You do not have to go to the Transportation Centre. Minivans to town, via Bang Na Trat highway and On Nut BTS, stop at the airport - same level as all the other buses but go out the door and keep going right until you see a load of Thais and no falangs queing at a bus stop. But I don't recommend the minivans for really heavy luggage (and this info is one year old also, so location may be different now)

Its turn left now as you go out of the door at the very bottom floor of the airport, and walk to the end opposite the exit from the canteen. Other destinations too e.g. Don Muang. Price around 40 baht depending on destination. OK if you just have a small size backpack, hang luggage size, not big cases. These minivans actually start at the Transportaion center and pick up at the airport so you can get them both places.
