  1. I find i get along best with anyone who attempts to make the best out of any situation and people who don't let their ego run wild all the time.

Then you should stay away from thaivisa, there are a LARGE number of bitter expats here who love to bash Thailand , thai culture, and thai people, but if you learn to filter that out, this place can be good. rolleyes.gif

  2. 1. How much water does one needs per day, and I am not talking about using it for cooking etc, just basic needs.

    2. How long will the flooding last? Anyone knows, anyone hear any estimations?

  3. ถึงแม้ can also be used

    ถึงแม้กล่องคงจะมาถึงวันนี้ ผมก็ยังต้องไปตรวจ email ก่อน

    Thanks a lot!

Just a correction, it was not I who was going to check the email, I wanted someone else to do it. wink.gif

  4. I think it depends on your definition of a good deal. I have friends who live in On-Nut, and they pay the same price for a proper one bedroom, with the same amenities. But they're farther out of town, and the area isn't as nice in my opinion.

Where I live, it's possible to get a proper one bedroom for a bit more, maybe 9,000, but again, I think it's all about location. If you're happy, then you've got a good deal!

edit: oops, sorry, I thought you were the OP, this post can be deleted

  5. If you look through Thai eye's

This is what 99% of all falangs does not understand

We complain about how Thai people do things,

We throw money around and take there women,

These above things are key to understand, but most of us are totally unaware of.

A lot of us would get pissed off, If in our country, there was all of a sudden a group of people, lets call them "Falingos", that were spread out in our home country.

There were a few things that they all had in common.

    1. Even the poor falingo had a salary ten times better than the poor average man in your own country.

    2. Most of these falingos was walking around, with a girl from your own country.

    3. Most of these falingos looked down on your own people, and complained ALOT about your country.

Of course there would be some people in your own country that would not really like the falingos. In fact, i am sometimes amazed, how much we can get away with, without getting our ass kicked.

  6. Thai ladies are basically just the same as all other ladies, they seek to marry a partner who can love them, take care of them and offer the financial stability to allow them to raise a family and live happily through the ups and downs of life.

  7. This particular employee takes about 3 days off every month (outside of the usual holidays, sick days etc) and it is not fair to the other employees and it is not fair to me and the company.

Many of you suggests that it would be ok to cut the salary if he did not show up when expected, but he always tells me a few days in advance that he will gonna take leave, but still, I think it is too much, and I would like to cut his salary, but would feel hesitant if I knew it was not common practice to do so.

If he asks you to take a day off and he's already used up all his holiday why not just say "No"? Or "You can take a day off but i'm going to cut the pay for that day"

Yes, this is exactly what I want to do, that is why I ask if I can do it, from a legal point of view, or/and if it is common practice by others to do so.

So in summary, I get the idea that it seems to be ok to cut the salary if he does not show up without saying anything, this is however not a problem, he always tells me in advance that he will take leave, so know we just need to know, if I can tell him that I will cut his salary if he takes leave.

  8. First off, thanks for all the comments.

I am very well aware of that I give them a lot of free time compared to many other companies.

  9. Thai Law says 30 days sick leave per year..

Kind of stingy to dock someone 772 baht when they only get 8500 anyway,...give the man a break

That's right, then he will take the piss and take more time off coz he will get paid anyway.

If he asked for holiday then should be paid if holidays are left. If he just took the days off without permission then dock his salary.

If his holidays are used up then dock his salary also.

Yes, this sounds reasonable to me, but I would like to know if anyone knows if this is according to the law, or not.

  10. If our employees take days off then the days are cut from any available holiday days that they have.

If they don't have any holiday days left then we would cut the salary as you described. We have never had a problem with this as employees have always considered this fair (this is Thailand...why would you get paid for not coming to work..)

We don't differentiate between "sick" and "holiday". Obviously if a serious illness arises we'd consider this on a case by case.

Interesting, well my employees get the usual 30 days sick leave (which i think is a lot as it is), plus the regular thai public holidays, and they never work on Saturdays, plus two weeks paid holiday during christmas, even though thais do not celebrate christmas.

That is why I am a little concerned, I think I give them a lot of holidays as it is, should they then on top of that also get random days off without losing anything?

Problem is when you have more than one person working for you, and the other ones who have a higher salary, would you then also give them holidays every now and then? If not, it would be unfair to the other employees. Following your strategy it would mean, the less you earn, the more holidays you can expect?

  12. International Funds Transfer via Bualuang iBanking

International Funds Transfer via Bualuang iBanking is a great way to transfer money overseas quickly and conveniently with Bangkok Bank's highly secure internet banking service. Funds can be used to pay for overseas educational expenses, send money to relatives living abroad (for Thai nationals) or to repatriate income (for foreigners working in Thailand). The service requires a one-time registration set-up, and then transfers can be made on demand at your own convenience.

    Go here:

    http://www.bangkokba.../pages/ift.aspx

Thank you for the link, have you tried this service yourself, or know anyone who tried it?

Can I send the money to my own bank account in Europe, it seems like the service is aimed at someone who will send money to someone else.

As aurelius says, this is a very straightforward service, used by a growing percentage of our customers. If you have any problems please PM me. Thanks

    Ian

Thank you guys for the information.

What is the transfer fee for each transaction compared to, if I were to go to the bank myself once a month and did the transfer myself?

  14. Good news.

Many, many Thais are in the same boat. They do something called "Gor Sor Nor" การศึกษานอกโรงเรียน. This gives them the equivalent of a high school diploma. This is available everywhere.

Thanks all for the helpful replies (those that stayed on topic that is)

Briggsy, what does "Gor Sor Nor" really means? The thing you wrote afterwards as far as i can tell would be "gaarn suksa nook roong rian" and would not be "Gor sor Nor".

Which of the two sentences should i look for and use when founding out more information about this, i am a little confused.

    Gan Seuksa Nork rong rien.

    ก.ศ.น.

    Literally Education outside of school.

Every single Thai knows what this means. It is a recognised qualification equivalent to a Mathayom 6 certificate.

Btw, how long it would take to finish each Mathayom? Is it like one year for M1 and M2, another year for M3 and M4 etc?

Also, if anyone knows in general, a rough idea how much this would cost? Including fee for school and study material?

  15. There is a large Thai education complex close to the EKKAMAI BTS where there is a Sunday program for adults. My GF who had a 4th grade education and was 36 years old started Sunday classes there six years ago. She received her Gor Sor Nor three years ago and just graduated last week from Siam Dhurakit College with a certificate in Hotel and Restaurant Management.

Will it lead to a job? Probably not, but her pride in accomplishing something she never thought she had the ability to do and the feeling of self-worth it has given her makes it entirely worth while.

My partner had a similar experience. He graduated from Primary 6 at his local school, worked for some years, then did two years at Gor Sor Nor to cover the full secondary education (M.1 to M.6). This taught him very little, but qualified him to enter a Higher Diploma Course at Vocational School

Yes, getting the basic education on paper will get him/her more opportunities.

Ok, great, yes, education does not automatically means that she will get a job, but she gets more opportunities, more self confidence etc as you pointed out.

Great, this is exactly what I was looking for! Thank you.
