  1. Thanks to the "mod" for redirecting. I completely oversaw the "Food" thread :o

Thanks for the replies and interest. I hope we can all learn from something like this.

OK today I was at the market and saw these. I made sure that I got the signs too, so anyone who can read Thai will be able to know what it is if the picture is uncertain.

    These are my first 3

  2. Hi

One of my favourite past-times is walking the local markets. Everyday I see things I have never seen before. Maybe this topic has been talked about before, however I find nothing. What about starting a forum to educate those of us (like me) who have no idea what some of these things are. If there are people interested then I would love to start and post some photos that I have taken.

  3. It is that time again when I need to worry about my visa. I had a double entry tourist visa issued in Phom Penh. The second entry was stamped March 6th and is valid until May 4th. I believe I can get an extension of 30 days from the immigration office for 1,900 THB. As a tourist, can I go to any immigration office?

What I have noticed before is that nearly always the permitted time to stay in Thailand has always been shorter than I calculated. 2 months is never 2 months, from date to date. I have a return flight to S.Korea on 2nd June. What date must I get my extension to be able to stay until 2nd June?

Thanks for any help and info.

  4. Hello bangmat

    Sorry that can't help you.

I too am in the same boat, except I do not have a Thai or other partner. I am also from the UK and want to start a business.

I have posted a message on this forum and will post more on other forums. Let's keep in touch and exchange any information we can gather. I do not want to go into catering so don't worry about any competition my side.

send me your e-mail and if I get any news I will inform you. If you get any news please inform me too.

    Good luck

    Tony

  5. Hi

I am pretty sure this will be moved to another forum. The reason I posted here is that I want as many people to read it as possible.

I would like to stay in Thailand (been here 7 months now) and am thinking of opening a business in Krabi area.

I am at the moment in Bangkok. Starting a business here seems to be a very complex thing and reading all the info on the net gets very confusing.

I would like to meet up with somebody (English, German or anyone who speaks fluent English or German) who could explain the correct procedure, the pro's and con's and generally give GOOD advice. The ideal person/people would be someone who has already walked this path, successfully. Even someone who has learnt through making mistakes is welcome to meet up with me.

I am British, 58 years old. Anyone who can give SERIOUS advice and has a few minutes free is most welcome to contact me through this forum.

    Thanks

  6. I live in Samut Prakarn. I have a small motorbike (Honda Click) I have been here now 6 months and bought the bike in the first month. It takes me 30 minutes to get to On Nut, it takes my friend 1 hour for the same journey by bus. I have driven to Pattaya (4 hours) and this month I plan on a journey to Krabi (expect 5 days) stopping to admire places like Hua Hin, Chumphon, Ko Pha Ngan, Surat Thani and then across land to Krabi. On a bike I can do what I want, stop when and where I want, enjoy the scenery more than in a car and get the wind and sun. It is one of the most beautiful feeling that I have ever experienced. True the air in Bangkok city is terrible, many moto taxi drivers are absolutely crazy and the police stop me regularly (about once a month), usually I have no idea what for and mostly the just tell me to go, I have never had to show any insurance (which I do have) I have no tax disc showing and nobody asked to see it. I have had no driving license since 8 weeks, it was pick-pocketed but they have never caused me problems. 3 times I had policemen wanting tea-money. I paid but only half of what they wanted. All in all I enjoy driving me bike. I would hate to be stuck for hours in a taxi or car in the city. Outside the city driving a motorbike is a wonderful experience, don't stay on the main roads, get off the beaten track, see and learn Thailand as it is. It is wonderful. Yes, you need eyes in the back of your head, but keep cool, always use your side mirrors and don't drink or speed. Even in the city there are unbelievable things to be seen if you take the back streets. I can be in a "jungle" of banana and coconut orchards in minutes, take the ferry across Chao Praya and discover the area in the "big loop" just south of Bangkok. It is a completely different world. If you are in Chiang Mai area, get on a motorbike and go to the villages, play with the kids and enjoy the hospitality of the native tribes. At first I had many punctures but not once was I left alone, everywhere there are motorbike repair stations and you don't even have to speak Thai to get your bike repaired. Overall I love this experience but each to his own. One quick note to car drivers, please look out for motorbike drivers and try to leave a little room to your left for motorbike drivers to pass through, that way you minimise the risk of motorbike drivers taking unnecessary risks. Wish me luck.

  7. I live in Samrong, just outside Bangkok. I do have a motorbike and usually use it when I travel into the city but sometimes I use the local bus. My friend learns Thai at a school on Thong Loh and uses the bus daily. Many times, usually around lunch time the journey has been free. There is a ticket collector on board and even after offering to pay, we/he has been told it is free. Does anyone know the rules? Is this just on certain busses or routes? Is this only for a limited time?

    Thanks for any input.

  8. I live on the outskirts of Bangkok (Samrong Nua - belongs to Samut Prakarn) in a large Condo. I never heard much about burglary here however 2 weeks ago someone broke into the room whilst I was sleeping Yes I and my friend were sleeping in the room. The walked passed the bed which is literally 2 cm next to the door (It is a small room and a large bed) walked to the desk took my iPhone , my Chanel ceramic watch, a cheap watch from the night market, my friends wallet with just under 10,000 THB and his watch. Fortunately they left my camera and the 2 laptop computers. They didn't search through any drawers or cupboards. Just scary that they are so cheeky to do it while you are in the room.

Only 2 months ago in Chinatown I had my wallet pick-pocketed, all my credit cards and driving license stolen. It is making me feel unsafe in Thailand these days.

  9. lol, some very interesting and crazy minds at work here. I am 100% certain it wasn't my friend, sorry for you who have long-time friends you cannot trust. Anyway, I wasn't insured and am just thankfull we didn't come to harm. As I said in my first mail, the reason I posted is to warn others, even those who live in condominiums and large apartment blocks that these things are VERY real. Just out of coincidence, how many of you lock your doors when you are at home?

One other thing is that since that day I have been pretty sick, headaches and upset stomach causing vomiting, symptoms of poisoning maybe. Maybe the thief/thieves used some kind of gas (sleeping or other) I don't know and as far I am concerned now, I learnt my lesson. Thanks for the sympathy and suggestions

  10. Hi Beardog!

I have just come back from the police station, we were there 2 hours, bad English communication but a police officer came back with us and took many photos. Don't think it will do much good.

You seem to have been in a very dangerous situation, so happy that things went well and some of the b......s have been caught.

My iPhone has GPS and I am pretty sure I turned it on after it was unlocked yesterday. The sim card has been removed I guess, I called many times today only to hear the number is not available at present. I do have the original box, the phone is only a few months old. I gave the police the serial number.

I'm pretty ignorant as to how GPS works, maybe you could give me more information.

    Thanks

    Tony

  11. gooner - I did not give anyone my address. I withdrew the money from an ATM machine a few kms away and the money was put into my wallet not his, I gave him the money at home. My friend took the delivery at the door, I don't know if it was the same person as usual. There is only one small restaurant on the ground floor and everybody here in the condo knows the very friendly owner and his wife very well. He has been here for many years.

Phil - I have a large amount of cash in Euros, British pounds and other currencies in a small draw in the desk. my friend knows about this. This wasn't touched. No drawers were opened. It was my friend who at first, this morning couldn't find his wallet or watch. I thought he must have misplaced them. Only after he had left for school, while I was searching for them, I noticed my iPhone and watch were missing too. I know exactly where my watch was.

  12. TexasRanger - No I do not suspect my friend. We have been very close, like brothers now for over 4 years.

Aussiejosh - Yes, this happened whilst we were sleeping. The thief had to walk past us in bed to get to the desk. It is a 1 room apartment with the bed next to the door.

klakaha - There is no cctv here. We had a security guy who made a note of everyone entering or leaving the building with info about their vehicles but he was dismissed a month ago.

  13. Thanks Peter,

I have not spoken to the police yet and am not sure what good it will do. Apart from them not speaking much English in this area, there was no forced break in. Therefore no real evidence that it happened.

I was pick-pocketed in Chinatown during Chinese New Year, I spent over 2 hours at the police station there only to be told, "No speak English", "Go tourist police"

I do not have insurance and will have to put it all down to "live and learn"

I wish these guys would take the money and valuables but at least leave the papers (e.g.. ID cards, credit cards, driving licenses etc.) so that they could be returned. I lost 3 credit cards and cannot get them replaced here. I have been waiting now 6 weeks for a replacement driving license. It is just good that my friends credit card was in my wallet last night, and that was still in my pocket. It is the only possibility left for us to get hold of money now.

Yes, the thought of "will they/he/she return" has also been on my mind. You can be sure the door will be double locked and chained as from now.

  14. This morning I woke up to find that someone had been into my condo, whilst I and my friend were sleeping and stole things from my desk. Things that went are my iPhone 3G, my Chanel white ceramic watch, my friends wallet with ID card and ca 9,000 THB and his watch. Strange but 2 laptop computers were left also my Sony camera. This makes me think that it wasn't a professional. The condo (in Samrong Nua) dismissed the security guy last month due to lack of money.

3 very strange things happened yesterday,

first - my iPhone, which had been locked for the last 3 weeks was unlocked yesterday afternoon at MBK.

second - my friends wallet has usually only small money inside, yesterday however he withdrew 10,000 THB to pay his schooling fees for this month.

third - we always lock the door when we come home, yesterday we ordered food from the restaurant on the ground floor and after it was delivered forgot to lock the door.

    Bad coincidences.

Really I am not sure why I am writing this, just now I am in a state of shock. The thought that someone was in the room whilst we were sleeping is scary. Maybe I just want to warn all other members of the reality of these things. Be careful always!

  15. I drove to Sri Racha from Bangkok (On my Honda Click) on Monday. I kept on Sukhumvit road, saw many signs in English for the zoo. I'm sure you will not have any problem finding it.

    Have a great day.

p.s. Let me know what it is like, price animal care and what animals please. Would like to go myself one day.

  16. Hello,

I'm planning a trip to Cambodia and Vietnam, leaving bangkok this weekend. My original thought is to travel to Trat and then go across the boarder to Koh Kong.

I read information that the ferry service from there to Sihanoukville had been closed in September 2008. Does anyone have any new information? Has the service been resumed? Anyone who did the trip, please contact me and tell me about it.

    Thanks.

  17. Can anyone please update me on the proposed visa fee waiver. Is it in force yet and if so, how does it work?

I have a double entry visa that has to be used before 7th March. I am British. I have been here now almost 60 days on my first entry. That means that I have to apply for a 30 day extension next week at the immigration. Do I have to pay 1,900 Baht and then leave and re-enter Thailand before the 7th March, so as to get my 2nd entry = another 60 days?

Thanks for any info - Tony in BKK
