  1. When you think about it, this is what's kept the place 'pleasant' enough - but the mid-term future doesn't look very good does it..

I for one am looking forward to the post USSR-esque free for all that it'll likely all become. I have my chess pieces in place, how about ya'll?

    :o

this sounds really cool but why is there going to be a free for all?

  2. you are fooling yourself kid. the majority of tourists are not going to soi cowboy. that is your false assumption.

Soi Cowboy and Nana Plaza (and the sex industry in general) are the major reason for tourists being in the lower Sukhumvit area. There's not much other reason to stay around there. Close it down and the local economy will be badly affected.

its central bangkok the area will do just fine without that

  3. u guys are so silly of course playing cards are not illegal. games which dont involve money changing hands is not gambling.

people gamble on football do you think football is illegal in thailand?

try to use your brains if you can.

  4. Maybe it has something to do with so many boys here in Thailand being brought up without their fathers around -- lack of strong male role models, hence effeminate behaviour -- that's a possibility, don't you think?

no, i dont think that makes any sense whatsoever.

the true answer WAS ALREADY GIVEN IN THE OP. lol

  5. so this is new building is very close to an area of farang bars... won't it be kind of weird?

The Fico Group owns the Grand Millenium Hotel and Fenix Tower on the other side of Soi Cowboy. I think its more weird that Soi Cowboy can compete with income generated on that side as well as the Interchange at Asoke and Sukhumvit also owned by the Fico Group which was founded by the Srichawala family.

How long before Soi Cowboy is more profitable as a Hotel than a bar area in a prime Sukhumvit CBD area?

yes, hopefully there comes a time when these places are not profitable enough and are pushed out.

  6. I think the penultimate paragraph will be well received by foreigners such as myself, who spend many hours each year queuing up for re-entry procedures. Only last month another 45 minutes queuing. Entry into Japan, Singapore, Taiwan and Brazil over the past few months have shown the efficiencies with which immigration can be achieved - with a smile too, and in the case of Singapore, even a boiled sweet!

If it is actually put into operation, I welcome the new immigration move.

ive never spent more than 5 minutes in an immigration line in bkk

  7. Dear All,

Over the last 3 years since living in Thailand I have noticed an increasing percentage of Taxi Drivers adjusting the meter of the taxis. Most of us are aware that as soon as you get in the car, it should read 35 baht. And then after 2KM increase 2 baht every kilometer depending on stops.

However tonight (27th July) I took a taxi to Tesco and normally costs 51 baht. On the return it would cost me 60 baht due to a U-Turn. Though tonight's return on the same distance with no traffic cost me 75 baht! I know its not a big difference but if your used to a average price this can be a daunting thing happening. I am very sure that when Taxis see a farang the flip a switch inside the cab and has a higher rate or the meter is fixed!

So guys, be aware and here is a golden rule. Check the meter every Kilometer and if your traveling around Bangkok, it should not cost you no more than 100 baht if in a local area. I remember once I had to travel 24 Kilometers everyday and cost me 135 baht with no traffic or stops.

    Andy

    lol
