  1. Just restarted and got the 'starting windows' screen, it has stopped on that screen with blue lines running down the side of the screen, this leads me to believe it's something much more serious than a screen problem...

    post-78826-1256196487_thumb.jpg

I'm getting more convinced that it's your video card, and that is (probably) a less serious problem than your screen going on you. I say probably because high-end video cards can cost considerably more than a new monitor, but you don't strike me as a very high-tech guy, so it's probably a low-end video card that would be fairly cheap rto eplace. The other possiblility is that you are using an on-board video card (part of the motherboard) and that may indicate that you are having some difficultie with your M/B.

  2. I remember a very peaceful, interesting place......no worries........that place has gone.

The peaceful and interesting place is still there JR, it's just that there are more people living on the edge, Thai as well as foreigners. Again, it's not the city, it's the people.

HUH??? How can the two be separated? A ciy IS its people. Without the people, we call those places "the countryside" or "ghost towns".

  3. I'm going to be in Thailand over Christmas, and will have a kitchen with an oven, so I am thinking of making christmas dinner rather than going to one of the pubs in Bangkok like I normally do.

I would want to cook a chicken rather than a turkey, so I don't expect the meat side of things to be a problem (incidentally, anyone know where I could get a free-range chicken in Bangkok?).

I'm not so sure about potatoes, gravy, yorkshire puddings and vegetables.

Will I be able to get potatoes that are suitable for roasting?

    Is bisto/oxo available?

    Pre-made yorkshire puddings?

Suppose parsnips are out of the question?

If you have any experience, and/or can share any tips, I'd really appreciate it!

    Thanks :)

are you for real? it's scares the living beejesus out of me if people like you really exist. :D

LOL - If this scares you so badly, how the h*ll do you cope with any real situations in life?

To the OP: As Gibby said, make your own Yorkshire pudding. Look on the internet for the "James Beard Yorkshire Pudding" recipe. The ingredients are as basic as it gets, the results are great, and it's virtually foolproof. I find using a muffin pan to cook individual servings is preferable, but a cake pan works as well. Good luck with everything.

  4. Yuck, cant stand it. I always get a bad stomach after eating there as well....probably from not having the patience and eating partially boiled meat.

And to top it off, the desert selection at MK is horrible. So not even a reward for my good behaviour.

Oh good - it's not just me. I also found that my stomach would be in a state of distress after eating at MK -- gassy and sore. But I don't think it's from eating partially boiled meat because we always cooked it long enough. There just seems to be something in some of the ingredients that plays hel_l with my gut.

So, I'm now allowed to pass on MK (thank gawd) when the GF and family get the urge to go. I always gave the place a failing grade anyway - not very tasty and overpriced.

  5. This will be good, i cant wait for captain magoo to come galloping over the hill to defend the thai cops,,,,,,,,,! :) oops, dunc beat him to it !

Honestly, it gets to the point of absurd how there's a certain core of members who seem to actually believe that Thailand is absolutely perfect. To step in and defend the police in this situation is just plain STRANGE. I'm becoming convinced that these hardcore members of the "Thailand is Perfect" brigade must have burnt bridges so badly in their home countries and (and all the rest?) that Thailand is their only option, so by constantly jumping in here to defend it (often to the point of ridiculous) it makes them feel better. Really, that's the only logical explanation I can come up with for people whose glasses are so rose-colored that they can't see what's actually going on around them. Blissful souls, they are. LOL

  6. A dog restaurant.

    Amazing Thailand.

maybe the Tourist Authority would promote this to get some more numbers here - it makes more sense than some of their schemes :)

They should come up with a program.. say....hmm.. an Elite Card ? That would get them into the dog best spas, dog resorts, dog massages. Even throw in a few cats to chase. That would be a winner.

You guys are on to something here, but I think we finally see Thailand's real "HUB" opportunity -- perhaps one that's more realistic than being the education hub, telecommunications hub, Asian financial hub, and all the other "hub" possibilities that have been laughingly suggested by the honored members of gevernment. They should shoot for being the Dog Restaurant Hub of Asia, maybe even the world.

  7. Obviously to BBB.

    Obviouslt not!!! :)

There is no BBB website, unless you want the Better Business Bureau.

The website is www.3BB(dot)co.th, and the call center number is 1530

Has anybody signed up with this outfit?

    Here is their price list.

    post-64188-1255317391_thumb.jpg

    I noticed that they have the 10 Mb/1 Mb service for 1,490 baht/mth and also a 4 Mb/1 Mb Premeire package for 2,500 baht/mth -- I'm confused!

  8. I'm not crazy about bacon, and always considered it to be one of the unhealthiest foods to eat due to the high amount of fat and sodium it has. However, I enjoy a BLT (bacon, lettuce, and tomato sandwich) occasionally, so I was wondering if the bacon made from this kit is any healthier, especially in the area of reduced sodium.

  9. I have clients with TOT line who have the BBB. The OP should give them a call and see if it is feasible in his area.

That's interesting to know. Used to be that with TOT line you could only have TOT server. I'll need to check that out, and change from TOT to BBB on our TOT line.

I had always understood the same thing - TOT line so must be TOT service. Can anybody confirm that accounts that have been TOT (line and servers) can be changed to BBB or any other service. I feel terribly ripped off everytime I pay my TOT bill.

  10. ^ Probably not, otherwise why would some Thais drive around on motorbikes wearing Nazi SS helmets complete with swastika and all, knowing that the Nazi doctrine consider them animals.

I believe the swastika pre-dates the Nazis by a long shot. It's been a Buddhist symbol for ages. Here's a bit of info:

The swastika is an ancient symbol found worldwide, but it is especially common in India. It can be seen in the art of the Egyptians, Romans, Greeks, Celts, Native Americans, and Persians as well Hindus, Jains and Buddhists.

The swastika's Indian name comes the Sanskrit word svasti, meaning good fortune, luck and well being.

In Buddhism, the swastika signifies auspiciousness and good fortune as well as the Buddha's footprints and the Buddha's heart. The swastika is said to contain the whole mind of the Buddha and can often be found imprinted on the chest, feet or palms of Buddha images. It is also the first of the 65 auspicious symbols on the footprint of the Buddha.

The swastika has also often been used to mark the beginning of Buddhist texts. In China and Japan, the Buddhist swastika was seen as a symbol of plurality, eternity, abundance, prosperity and long life.

The swastika is used as an auspicious mark on Buddhist temples and is especially common in Korea. It can often be seen on the decorative borders around paintings, altar cloths and banners. In Tibetan Buddhism, it is also used as a clothing decoration.

Anyway, I'm afraid you're right that most Thais are oblivious to the horrible association it has to Nazi Germany.

  11. I tried to continue with the toilet humour, butt I think all the jokes have been made.

On a more serious note, never get into a street fight in Thailand. There's no such thing as a 1 on 1 or even 2 on 1 fight here. It's always 5 or 6 on 1, and they're really vicious ugly things to see. Fortunately, I've never been in one, but I've seen a couple that were sickening to watch.

  12. i still don't understand what is leading you guys to believe he is or was even on the verge of committing suicide.

    Same same here.

I agree. My first impression was that Fred had finally figured out that spending much time here at TVF was a waste of it, so he was going to find something more constructive to do, or he just didn't want to face the sometimes very frank replies we all get occasionally.

However, others have speculated that Fred has (had?) plans to meet his maker ahead of schedule, so if that's the case Fred, please keep in mind that suicide is a long-term solution to a short-term problem.

  13. I have always wondered about nurses in Thailand .. is a nurse here in Thailand the equivelant to a nurse in Australia or America?

    No

Unlike elsewhere a Thai has to have a university degree to become a nurse.

But keep in mind that a Thai university degree is roughly equivelant to a high school diploma in western countries -- perhaps less than a western HSD because Thais notoriously cheat and plagiarize their way through all levels of school, and the Thai teachers notoriously let them get a away with it.

I would have to say that most of the Thai doctors I've received treatment from were terrible at their trade -- showed little knowledge or even much common sense, so I can't imagine that credentials from a Thai university would be much help in securing employment outside SE Asia.

  14. 57th???

I'm amazed it's that high on the list. They must have grabbed their statistics during a particularly good period. I would have guessed that Thailand was somewhere around 100th (or worse).

And how many years ago did those idiots in the government say that Thailand is quickly gearing up to be the telecommunications hub of Asia? :):D :D

  15. Was watching the horrendous programme which is Big Trouble in Tourist Thailand. As a previous resident in Thailand I was looking forward to the program but I've found it to be pretty low-rate stuff.

I don't want to dwell on the pros and cons of the tourist police as that has been done already, but from watching the program I can see why the tourist police could get up someone's nose. They do seem to give off the aura of arrogance and when I hear Howard miller refer to people as "the foreigner" it causes me some irritation. Does he forget he is not actually Thai?

My main concern is in regard to some episodes of incompetence from people trying to masqerade as real policemen. I will recall one such episode:

Some drunk and deaf tourists had been involved in an altercation, read fight, with a Thai male. So the tourists are seated at the table at walking street and a deaf tourist volunteer tries to sort out the situation through sign language. Meanwhile the bold Howard Miller goes in search of the Thai male - fair enough, as we don't want him to escape do we?

Here's where I take issue. Now, a proper policeman would interview the Thai person individually, away from the scene, as to bring him in contact with the other party from the fight (who were drunk and very agitated) could cause a re-occurence. On the other hand a poorly trained, or perhaps a mischievous individual, who could possibly have a double agenda, would bring the person back to face his fellow brawlers, knowing that it would cause a scene. Well, Howard chose to bring the Thai back to Walking street and of course it did kick off again, with the Thai getting knocked down and a tourist getting a bloodied nose.

So Howard, are you just poorly trained or were you being mischievous?

Ps. Howard thanks for the classic moment, where u tried and failed to put the guy in an armlock, while shouting "do not resist us!" A classic moment :) . If you would like private lessons in Krav Maga I would charge you a very reasonable rate.

I thought the same thing with regard to bringing the aggitated and drunk groups together - that it was a recipe for disaster. It seemed like a strange and illogical thing to do.

The other thing that stood out in that scene was when Howard Miller forced the deaf man's arms onto the table while saying something like, "I am police. Do no resist". I think this is the type of behavior that opens the TPV up to criticism. They are not police, and HM continually states that their roll is to assist the police. If that's true, wouldn't it be more appropriate to say something less authoritative and threatening like, "Calm down, I'm here to help you."?

  16. Hello All

I have searched the internet and our forum for a photocopy or JPEG of the TM.6 Arrival / Departure card.

I wish to send my brother an email with the information, he will need to enter onto his card, once it is giving to him on his inbound flight to BKK.

If anyone can send me a photcopy or JPEG of the form, front and back of each the Arrival and Departure parts, I would be very grateful.

I can not obtain this information for myself as I am currently in Afghanistan, so the card is clearly not available to me here.

Thank you in advance for anyone that can help me.

I'm sorry to be the one to say that this sounds fishy. If your brother cannot enter the information about his name, address, flight number, and length of stay, perhaps he shouldn't be traveling. Millions of people fill out the TM-6 form every year, and it's a straight-forward set of questions. I certainly wouldn't give anybody a copy of my TM-6 as I have to enter its number on the 90-day report form for immigration.

  17. Just a thought: I came up behind the most luscious Italian classic coupe this week, sans rear bumpers. Must have been an early VW Karmann Ghia.

When did they move Germany to Italy? :) I really must keep up on the news -- a little embarassing to miss big stories like that one.

But to answer the question, I'd like to get my hands on an early 70's Toyota Celica coupe. It may not seem terribly exciting to most people, but there's something about those cars that I've always liked.

Thank you for these links, as well. That 2000cc Celica is a pretty daring colour, but it works with the body style. It looks to be in excellent condition, and the whole collection is enviable.

Beacher, Take a look at this 67 Toyota Trueno. Almost like a Celica. It's got a late model 4A-GE 1600cc dual overhead cam motor. Like the minilite mag wheels.

Thanks for the link. I've never heard if that model - sort of reminds me of a cross between the early Corollas and Celicas. I'd probably be happy roaming around in that, but I still want an old Celica, too.
