  1. I was just wondering the other day, at BKK immigration (35 minutes btw), how life will be on the golf courses when they discover them (as I was surrounded by arrivals from Moscow and some other god-forsaken Russian hole). Until now we largely only have to put up with the antics of our Asian neighbors, which one might describe as charmingly annoying, but when this lot get out there I fear then end is in sight - anyone seen them encroaching on this last bastion of semi-civilization?

  2. Has anyone got any recent experiences getting a 1 year multiple entry non immigrant "O" from Hull / Birmingham? In the past I also used the visiting friends excuse - I do own a condo here now so have the deeds available but no wife ! thankfully.

Arrived in UK on Wednesday, sent application to Hull for 12 month "O" on Thursday (with apartment rental agreement and residency letter from immigration), and passport+new visa arrived in the mail yesterday morning. Probably the immigration letter was not needed but sent anyway as I had a copy. Business as usual it seems.

  3. I've got an outbound long haul at 08:30 on Monday morning, what time would anyone advise I arrive for check-in, presumably 06:00 will be the earliest?

Most check-in desks open 3 hours before departure. My last departure (January) was 08:25, I joined the immigration line at 06:40 and reached the desk at exactly 08:25. Luckily they held the flight as lots of people were in the same situation, but next time I'll give it the full 3 hours I think.

  4. Not entirely sure what type of girl you are looking for, you mention you are not looking for high priced bar girls, but I get the feeling that lower priced would be OK. I was on the beach on Koh Larn recently with a group of friends, the single ones amongst them were approached on numerous occasions by "Russian" girls (can't be 100% sure or their origin but for sure not local). They were all offering phone numbers to hook up later. Nobody talked cash but I suspect that it was a commercial proposition was being made, rather than a chance love at first sight type event.

Also was at a birthday party at Moon River Pub, our birthday boy was outside for a smoke and a bunch of Russian ladies came out also, coincidentally turned out was one of their birthdays as well (ha-ha), a lot of chat and flirting ensued, till our BB was spotted by his GF and made a hasty return to base. Anyway, it might be another option for you.

    Happy hunting.

  5. Shock horror NALAK.....you stopped by for just ONE beer!...and it cost 80 Baht!....and 65 Baht at the competitor!! In Pattaya!!!

Luckily its only 60 Baht in Samui....B)

well if you had read the post correctly it was 80baht 25 satang, the point being why the 25 satang i have never known a bar doing that before,

You obviously don't get out very much. Quite a few bars e.g. O'Reilleys on Silom Road calculate their bills to the nearest satang. It used to be 80.25 baht after VAT for a happy hour Heineken. This used to piss me off because they always rounded up to 81 baht and gave me a handfull of shrapnel in change. Then I realised that instead of leaving a 20 baht tip I would leave a 19.75 baht tip. And everybody was happy.

Don't fight it, just go with the flow. Not sure what the exact price is now, but I still can get one happy pint and leave a tip from a 100 baht note.

Just wondering why you would be happy leaving a 24.6% tip for a pint of Heineken? The service would have to be out of this world to justify that.

  6. could we please get back on topic which was.....drum roll..."The Dark Side" and something about eating and drinking but certainly not bickering. thanks. B)

    so back on topic

i thought i would venture out from the darkside tonight to the Pasta Basta

we went out in the wife's car as i fancied a drink and upon arrival she was frustrated that there was no parking available

parking in the space opposite was restricted to Castro gym and although there was ample parking space for 5-6 cars outside the restaurant this was blocked off by cement bollards and occupied only by motorbikes

she asked the lady in the restaurant where she should park and they said out on the road

whilst asking she noted there was one person in the restaurant

so at my behest and encouragement she parked outside the restaurant on the road

a wayward motorbike rider nearly hit her car almost the moment she walked away from it

this did not help her mood and she made it clear she was not happy and did not want to stay to eat

so i agreed with her and we drove away

i expect not to return to the delights of the pasta basta which is a shame by all acounts

so we went down soi kow noi and passed on the red palm mexican i have seen talked about on TV, which looked like it was closing down and ended up in the White Horse near the railway line which was a delight

the falang and thai food was excellent as was the friendly informal service

the guitarist and vocalist was good fun and melodic, i enjoyed his singing and playing

    not too loud, just right

the pattaya players came in during our meal and seemed a jolly bunch

all in all it was a surprising treat after a disappointing start

so well done White Horse, you saved the day, we will be back............

btw, that was Khao Talo you ended up in, not Khao Noi.

  7. You may want to skip this particular beach. It is a bit rustic. More rock than beach. You absolutely need a helmet & decent shirt & pants(naval code) You will have to be taxied into the actual beach (they provide the free baht bus)& We didn't find it at all impressive. We live about 4 kilo's or so from there. You have to leave your ID at the guard shack. Do not expect beach chairs like Pattaya Jomtien or Ban Ampur or Bang Sare beaches.Mostly all Thai

So not much English spoken there.

If you do go there make sure all your vehicles data is legal & have a helmet on if you are on a motorbike.Normaly you can cruise this area without a helmet- but NOT the base!

Wow...but it looks so good in the pics I saw in this blog, at the end of the page is the reference to Sai Keaw Beach:

    http://thaitrump.blogspot.com/

Is it Sai Keaw Beach you are talking about? I've never been, but have been thinking about going as the weather is soooooooo beautiful right now!

My preference of the 2 "Navy" beaches is Had Sai Keaw. This is the one on Sukhumvit shortly after Bang Sarey. Yes, you leave your ID at the gate but you can drive all the way to the beach car park except on weekends and public holidays, on these days you hop on the shuttle bus. There are deckchairs for hire, food and drink, clean water to swim in and nobody hassling you to sell you anything.

  8. I have a related question, can anyone tell me if there is any time limit required after divorce (outside Thailand) before one can legally marry in Thailand. On the Thai Embassy website (London) it states a time of not less than 310 days - but this seems to be targeting the female party as this requirement can be waived with a doctors certficate stating that the applicant is not pregnant - I am pretty sure, being male, that I could get such a certificate but does anybody really know if this 310 day period is supposed to apply to the male party as well?

  9. Seems silly to me.. The authorites made ''border runs'' difficult and said they wanted people to have a proper visa. Not keep re-entering on tourist visas.. But if they really are going to make 1 year multi non O's hard to obtain what will that do to long termers ( like myself ) who aren't old enough for a retirement visa, not married (but living with GF in long relationship) and who spend all their time in Thailand when not at work ( I work around offshore 4+ months a years ) Every year for over 10 yrs now I have obtained a non O using the 'visiting friend' catagory, Okay no real prob to do an amphur wedding ( My GF would be happy ) as a last resort. But the 'house deeds' isn't a problem.. I have a tabien bahn/Chanood in my company name so guess they should accept that but as has been said the farang owning property might be a problem or is it only deeds for condos they will accept.. Who knows.. Sounds like another 6 Month 'crackdown'

As with everything in Thailand it will depend on the person, the time of day and any number of other factors..

I have about 8 Months left on my current visa.. Hopefully it will have all blown over by then..

In my 20+ years in Asia.. alot spent in Thailand I have always tried to do everything legally ( yeah I know about the company house stuff ) and have done nothing to cause any problems apart from spending a large portion of my income here.. I'm not alone there are thousands of well paid offshore types spending money here.. many on Non O's.. Maybe they really don't want us here now.. Thought it was only the skink, desperate and dodgy business owners they were trying to discourage ?

    [/quote

I'm with you on this one, similar situation to yours except renting not owning. I'm going to be trying for another "O" from Hull next month. The website still has the forms for family/friends and is slightly changed from last year as it now has a draft letter where you declare the address of the friend you're staying with. Surely there must be some way to sort undesirable long stayers from the likes of us, being married is hardly any way to differentiate between good and bad.
