  1. Yes, the army has done a fantastic job. The country is free at last from corruption because the army have proved themselves to be very honest.. as they have always been in the past.

Not only have the army introduced whole transparency, but now all Thais are free to voice their political opinions and to speak out about anything they think that might be unfair or unjust. It's great that the army is helping the thai people.

I suppose you also believe in the tooth fairy and Father Christmas, street party's and free food.

Corruption is still a huge potential problem and there are many curtailments regarding freedom of speech.

Perhaps in the right direction by still a long ay to go.

Hallon - I do believe you missed the sarcasm.

  2. It just saddens me that politicians and religious leaders try to gain power and money by making the gay community a villan. I am pained for someone who is born gay into a family that believes this hate and does not support their son/daughter/sister/brother. I do feel optimistic that the world is beginning to understand and accept LGBT rights - but no one should face hate and/or jail or death or conversion therapy for who they are.

  3. I grew up in the 70's in a small city in the Southern U.S. - there were no asians in my city. However, I went to university in Boston which had a huge asian populaion. Not sure why, but when I met some cute asian guys - my knees just buckled and my head went dizzy. I have dated asians almost exclusively ever since -

  4. DMK definitely needs a bit more renovation - before customs there are a few coffeeshops and some small restaurants but nothing exciting. Neither side has free wifi. After customs, there is King Power Duty Free (surprise) and the usual chains - Starbucks / Subway / McDonalds and Fuji. 4 hours will seem long for a layover at DMK.

  5. hey guys we ain't all fully loaded $$$$$ to splash out on a taxi like some of u guys!

You appear to be fully loaded $$$$$$ to fly to Thailand in the first place. How much did your air ticket cost?

Thank God someone said this. Why would anyone go on a vacation and not plan/save enough ahead?

    Aside from that -

You seem to be wanting to save a couple bucks. A suggestion for you then: TRY WALKING.

It's free, it's healthy, and you will have $50 extra in your pocket when you arrive.

(Although I will never say its a good suggestion.)

why must people judge the intent of the thread? If the op is asking for suggestions to get from DMK to Pattaya besides a taxi, either offer sugestions or don't comment at all.

Not really "effecting" planes down low or pistons, the ash turns to a kind of glass when heated to temps that turbines run at and it is up in the jet streams.

what website is this graphic from - really fascinating

  7. Good! I hope they do come out to protest. Easier to round them up that way.

I do not support either side - but why should they be arrested just for being red shirts? I understand the need for peace - but if they are not violent - why should they be arrested?

I also support a temporary martial law but I don't agree with the news black out and would like to hear a timetable about when they expect to return to democratic rule.

  8. I live now in Thailand but have been going to Bali at least once per year for 15 years. I really love living in Thailand but find Bali so much more enjoyable for a beach holiday than Koh Samui / Phuket / or Pattaya.

Of course, costs have gone up - but it is easy to find a hotel with pool and not far from the beach for THB 1,000 per night. I stay away from Kuta - but find Legian and Seminyak enjoyable - also Ubud is one of my favoriate places on earth.

Easy to find cheap food in Bali - but not as much street food as Thailand.

  10. Open a second account in the same name as your US account. You will need to explain that you do not want your full name as in your passport.

You can always close the account when you receive the money if you will no longer be receiving payments in that name.

I tried to do this at Bangkok Bank's main Silom branch but was advised that the account name MUST match the passport name.

  11. I have also been caught in the "neverworld" of ACH transfers between my U.S. bank and Bangok Bank NY - for the first year all went smoothly and I used the ACH to make several transfers to buy a condo in Thailand. A year later, I made a smiliar transfer for about USD 5,000 but it failed to go through. After bouncing between banks and trying to determine what went wrong, Bangkok Bank announced that my name on my account was Kenneth XXX but the ACH transfer showed Ken XXX - and that was not acceptable. The most bizarre thing was that this had not been an issue for over a year.

I suggested the Bangkok Bank account be changed to match; however, they said the account name must match my passport. I contacted my U.S. bank but they had limited space for the name so had to truncate the name.

Finally, a supervisor advised that if I would sign a release of liablity to Bangkok Bank then they would allow the transfer but tat the letter was only good for one year. I made 2 transfers within the year and after the year - I contacted the same woman at Bangkok Bank to renew the letter. She ddn't remember the situation but after explaining - she said that Ken and Kenneth were close enough so there should not be a problem - I tried the transfer and it went through - inconsistant and frustrating in not knowing what to expect.

ACH transfers are much lower from U.S. banks but if you are in a tight financial situation - you could pay your U.S. bank to wire rather than ACH the funds and then the names do not have to match.

Good luck - and if you get the chance - let us know the outcome - you never know when others will have the same problem.

  12. I have been asked by the airlines why I don't have a return ticket. I show them my visa with extension to stay and no problems. But that is with the major airlines. Air Asia is to busy trying to figure a way to charge you extra than to worry about a return ticket.

I flew on AIrAsia from Surabaya, Indonesia to Bangkok non-stop on a one-way ticket with a U.S. passport. The Air Asia check-in agent did request either a ticket leaving Thailand within 30 days or a visa.

    Thanks - when was this?

  15. "Chop" is more Chinese than American, altho I must admit I am a proud Yank.... It's a commonly use expression for "stamped."

    Mac

Not questioning your responses - but as an East-Coast American (Boston/NY) - I have never heard anyone use "chop" in this context and don't know any of my American friends who refer to themselves as a "Yank" although I am familiar with this expression. What part of the U.S. are you from?

  16. Depending on the conditon of your current mattress, you might also look into just buying an overlay pad ontop of your mattress. It is substantially cheaper than an entirely new mattress and would also remove the delivery issues. Of course, if your mattress is old - then better to invest in a new one. Good Luck and Good dreams.

  17. I am glad that e-visas are an option, and living in Thailand and traveling within SE Asia, nice to save passport photos, but it seems that $28 for an evisa is a high handling fee compared to $20 at the Cambodian airport/land border. Again, since I have the option, I am not complaining but it seems that the handling fee (if any) should only be $2-3.

  18. I don't mind the AirAsia inflight experience (but their baggage check-in can be horrendous with all the mainland Chinese tour groups checking-in); however, their website is horrendous. If BangkokAir, NokAir, Lion or Thai have a smiliar fare - I book with them. But I must admit, AirAsia is frequently the cheapests option even with the nefarious add=on's.

I would be much happier to book with them if their website were not such a bait and switch.

  19. http://www.tripadvis...p_Province.html

the fare is USD 28 - I bought them directly from the bus company - it is located near the KFC on Sivatha Road which is also where the bus departs from Siem Reap at 8 AM. It is about 1 KM away from Pub Street.

It takes about 2 1/2 hours to the Cambodia/Thai border and about 1 hour for all the passengers to go throught Cambodian / Thai customs and then another 3 1/2 to 4 to Mo Chit and arrives Mo Chit around 3:30 to 4 PM.

I haven't had any issues about scams or shake-downs.

    hope this helps.
