  1. Ps Joe,

I didn't know you could get a multi entry or I would have gone for that option sounds a lot better. But it was a first time thing, and to be honest I just went along with what people told me. Plus I hated Lao with a passion, hopefully it's just the people around the embassy that are like Vultures and try to rip you off with everything. I was glad to be back in Thailand I can tell you.

Thank you for your help Sir.

Yes, I think you just experienced the chaos around the embassy - the Laos people are very mellow but like Thai people around a large number of Farangs - they can be aggressive and only interested in making money.

  2. I had the same experience a month ago on a Wednesday. I got to Chaeng Wattana at 10:30 AM - got my queue number for the retirement extension but my number did not get called until after lunch. Then, I got a queue number for the multiple reentry permit about 1:30 pm - they processed my number quickly but it took antoher 2 1/2 hours to get my passport back.

As a result, I left Chaneg Wattana on the 166 bus to Victory Monuement just before 4:30 PM - it took 30 minutes just to get to the main street and the entire 15 km jouney took 2 1/2 hours -

  3. China Southern gets pretty good reviews (other than the food) and are very competitively priced.

I did a dummy booking on kayak.com for 10-24 September, BKK-LAX and it came back at $968 r/t per ticket. Delta is about $40 higher per ticket. As you stated, I'd avoid 4 July and travel after the Labor Day weekend if my travel dates were flexible and price was one of the main factors.

China Southern now has 787 Dreamliners. Do they have them on that route?

China Southern uses an A380 from Guangzhou to Los Angles, not the 787.

  4. HBO's "The Case Against 8" a powerful account of the fight for marriage equality

Nominated for an Oscar Award, this is a powerful emotional account of the journey that took the fight for marriage equality all the way to the U.S. Supreme Court. This is a riveting inside look at the groundbreaking Supreme Court case that overturned Proposition 8, California's ban on same-sex marriage. With exclusive behind-the-scenes footage of both the powerhouse legal team of David Boies (a famous liberal lawyer) and Ted Olson (a famous conservative lawyer, who had previously won "Bush versus Gore") and the four plaintiffs in the suit.

If you would like to watch with other expats - there is an organized "Coffee and Movie" group - you can find the listing by googling "Coffee Meet-up Case against 8"

  5. Did you know Nancy L calling me a clown is rather personal. I have my views about a system that is broken. Why should I need to be in line at 3 AM to get a number. Why should people like you make rude comments about me. I do follow the rules and I do get the paper work required because I have no choice but I do not have to do it without comment. World War II was started over a country of people that followed a bad ruler.

I personally do not understand your mentality of making a perfectly logical sequence of messages into a pissing contest.

Yes, there are so many visa's processed - why? Because of rules that have no logical base. Yes I took time to process my visa because I did exactly what the immigration officer said the year before. The following year that message was no longer valid. Logic?

I wonder who the clown is? The follower who just goes with the crowd or the person who ask why do we do this, the process is broken?

And as far as making a complaint to my government when no other governments charge $50: the USA government is also broken with Obama heading the way into disaster.

The only thing I know for sure is the Almighty Master of Creation is crying over what He created and man broke.

I understand your frustration with the lack of logic on requiring a notarized letter which they do not totally trust. However, at your age (since you are on a retirement visa) - you must/should have learned that you need to have patience and kindness when dealing with governmental requlations.

While I do understand your frustration - I do hope that as I age - I do so with less hostility than you. The years in retirement should be filled with laughter and joy -

Also, the $50 U.S. notarary fee was in place long before Obama - you and I continue to see the world different - I am so grateful that Obama was elected (twice) and while he isn't perfect - he has been so much better for the world and the U.S. than either McCain or Romney -

relax and enjoy your golden years.

  6. Because quite honestly they don't really want us here.

    Why should they?

I cannot address the actual expenditures for the op; however, I think Thailand should try to attract those who have the ability to spend money in Thailand without working illegally. The same way they want to attract those over 50 who can verify their incomes - why is 50 plus a magic number - why not let in any person on a yearly basis who can verify an income fom overseas and a certain expenditure within Thailand. These people stimulate the economy and support jobs for Thais.

I understand they do not want expats working illegally, but they need to have a yearly visa program for those who can support themselves in Thailand without working regardless of their age. (I am already on a yearly retirement extension - so I don't have a vested interest).

It just makes economic sense for Thailand.

  7. I see the crosses are erected and white hoods firmly pulled on heads

Well, that statement appears just as ridiculous as those to which you refer. However, it would be very interesting to know just how many Nigerians come to Thailand as genuine tourists. And why do we never hear the end result from the BIB or the courts e.g. Nigerian sentenced to 5 years for scamming?

We also see in the news many times about U.S., Europe, Australia or UK citizens being arrested as pedofiles - by your logic, does that mean everyone from these countries are pedofiles?

  8. Why are you assuming that this happened at this specific location ? What are you basing this on ? Did you find a physical card reading device there ?

Your card details could have been compromised months ago and sold on to criminals in a bulk transaction containing 1000's of card details.

It's far more likely your details were stolen online from elsewhere at some point in the past unless this was a new card which has never been used anywhere else.

It could have been awhile back....only use Paypal online......

I have a paypal account that I rarely use. Last month, I got an email saying my transfer request was pending. Only thing, I never made a transfer request. Someone had breached my Paypal login. Finding a number/email to contact Paypal took hours - they don't post any contact info on their website. I reported the transfer request as fraudulent; however, the Paypal agent could not cancel it (say what?) . The amount requested was larger than what I keep in the account, so it was declined by my bank (after a USD 25.00 fee). Now a month later, paypal has yet to contact me with any info or resolution. - I am not a happy customer (former) of paypal.

  9. So having children means even more documents are required, only in Thailand.

    I for one am outraged.

Fancy immigration requiring documents to confirm paternity before granting a visa.

    How backward.

It's so easy to get visas into the UK and USA. They let anything pass and are the epitome of compassion

Well, at least it is in the USA! All you need to do is fly to Canada or Mexico and cross into the country illegally. You'll be rewarded with a green card and a pathway to citizenship. Now - for all those foreign nationals wishing to enter the US the correct and legal way, well the emperor president has told you, "so sad too bad suckers. Do it illegally and maybe you'll get in along with your extended family." Personally I'm glad that Thailand enforces it's immigration policy although I'd like to see it loosened up a little for foreigners married to Thai Nationals.

I see you can get FOX News here in Thailand.

If you continue the comparison forward - having children and a wife in the U.S. or U.K. would get you permanent residencey and an easy path toward citizenship - unlike here in Thailand.

  11. I agree that 40-45K THB is more than enough for a nice 1-2 bedroom rental. The biggest consideration is that it should be near the skytrain or MRT Line. Also, if you will be working in a specific location while here - not a bad idea to live close to your office since the rush hour masses can be a big hurdle. Also, take a look at the area during the day and also at night - certain areas have a total personality change from day to night.

  12. Yeah... Overall Air Asia is great - but more than once we arrived early and asked if we could get on the earlier flight... Flat NO as you need to needed to make changes 48 hour before...

If they have the seats available I'm not sure why they are so ridged as a policy?

I'd even pay 2-300 baht extra...

I think they do not let you on earlier flight because they are saving those seats for people who turn up at the airport at the last minute wtih no reservations and charge them full price

I guess the concept of flying standby is too complicated for them...

I am not a major fan of AIr Asia - I do fly them because of the low fares (even with the add-ons) but I do understand about not allowing standby - it starts to get complicated with bags and fuel loads and flight attendant staffing - standby is not as simple to process as it seems.
