BANGKOK: -- Promotion of green tea and soft drinks is now eyed by the Department of Health for banning after considering their high levels of sugar that is harmful to health, particularly children and adults.

The deputy director-general of the Department of Health Dr Sutha Jienmaneechotchai stated that the Department was considering a proposal to control green tea and carbonated drinks which have high sugar content because it is detrimental to health, According to Bangkok Post reported.

He said the Consumer Protection Board and the Food and Drug Administration would be asked to regulate advertising promotions on soft drinks and green tea adverts because of the high sugar content was harmful to health.

He said Thais’ daily sugar consumption is over four times the World Health Organisation (WHO)’s recommended level.

According to WHO, it recommends adults and children reduce their daily intake of free sugars to less than 10% of their total energy intake. A further reduction to below 5% or roughly 25 grammes per day would provide additional health benefits.

Thai consumes 104 grammes of sugar per day or about 26 teaspoons, he said.

Promotion campaign of soft drinks that offered cars and gold to consumers has encouraged over consumption of sugar, he said.

He said intake of sugar from normal food, such as rice, fruit or cooked food, is not harmful to health because it contains low levels of sugar, but excessive sugar added to manufactured food or drinks such as green tea is detrimental to health.

Several of the breast milk substitute brands in Thailand have 20% sugar in the milk powder. It makes the babies addictive. Somebody should have a deep throughout look into it.

  2. For me this looks like a case the justice authorities should do something about. The bus driver tried to kill the man on the cycle. Not a company fine. (50 years in prison for the maniac bus driver ) he has to be removed out of the society. He did not kill the man. The company should get a 100 million fine for employing a maniac like this. No background check. Probably not a legal driving license.

  3. Time to get the jacket out.

A good point. However, without sounding really harsh, I wonder how long it will be before we see the usual 'collections' here in Pattaya for the purchase of winter clothing for the people in the north.?

We've had them before and I was told that those who benefitted from the cash then sold the wooly jumpers etc once the weather turned hot again.

All the shoping Malls up here in Chiang Mai have been selling warm jacks ,from independent retailers for B150 fixed price for a month now .They are second hand and imported .The one i bought comes from Switzerland .Very good condition ,almost like new .

    I guess it was a Swiss-Chinese cooperation.

  4. Just another reason to never go to Phuket. But I wish to add one thing. People come here to get away from nanny states but when something like this happens suggest the nanny state rules and procedures to stop it. Maybe some of these guys should make up their mind do they want to live in a nanny state or not. Thailand is known for being lawless accept it.

Calling the police to trespass and evict an 86'd bar patron is living in a nanny state? Thailand is only lawless in the eyes of the PTP.

Went back and read the op and couldnot find the part about police trespass and 86'd bar patron and to be honest donot know what they have to do with this topic. What is a 86"d patron since I donot know and was never mentioned till you mentioned it. As far as lawless, that was the consensus long before PTP came into being. So in my opinion is just a fabrication on your part.

What does PTP mean? Peua Thai Party?????

  5. People who talk about speaking up, I agree but many Thais really don't care and want to be fast at their destination.

Also those van drivers make more money when they go fast (more rides).

It will be real hard to get them to slow down. A previous government wanted to put in GPS trackers in those vans. Sadly this was one of their good idea's but it never happened. I think the only way is more policing laser-guns and such (yes I know nobody likes it) But without more enforcement people wont change.

Its not that people in the West are better drivers, there is just far more effective policing and without it people would drive a lot worse.

Drivers in western countries are MUCH better drivers, but I`m convinced that is because they have to do driving schools before they are let out in the traffic.
