Vietnam needs english teachers. A lot of them pay western salaries as well which are fairly highly paid. Try Hanoi. Some places will arrange a long term visa if you're hired. I would not do it at 75 though, very hectic confused place.

Maybe settle into sleepy Siem Reap and volunteer at one of the orphanages there. There were expats doing that when I lived there.

Funny you mentioned Siem Reap.I've been considering a SHTF alternative to LOS. I've visited several times on bike trips.

Its hard to find out which areas are nice and affordable at thre same time. We've stayed not far from Pub Street before but it's not what you can say "residential". A newer condo rental would suit me just fine.PS: I'm well past the backpacker stage @73.

    Just in case.

I have a Non-O extended annually for years, Thai bank accounts with BAY, Bangkok Bank and K-Bank, Thai pink ID card.

I'm looking to set up an SET account that will pay dividends into my Thai bank account.

    Where? And How?

    TIA.

As others have said. <Bualuang Securities> very easy and a manager helped me in every way.I invested in a REIT that paid divvies monthly or quarterly I forget. The dividend went directly to my Thai bank account. Very professional and easy. It was a few years ago and some things may have changed.

I don't think you can just walk out. I have been to dental centers and a hospital here and the cashier is right there before you get to the elevator and they are definately watching so you don't leave. I had a question at the cashier last time and staff immediately appeared behind me quicker then usual. I think they would call security if he just walked out.

A few years ago I had quarterly Dr appointments at BPH heart center.

When done with the Dr a nurse would accompany me to the cashiers window on the next floor and didn't leave until my payment was completed.

It got to the point where I almost said something like "whats up don't you trust me?" and then I realized that they don't!

It pissed me off because my insurance company at the time paid out well over 1 mil previously for bypass surgery.

After checking the thick invoice I noticed the bill was well and truly padded.pricks

As has been noted foreign death is a matter for their Embassy to take care of and body will be held until Embassy allows release (and perhaps bills paid).  Embassy will attempt to contact next of kin and provide them contacts to help locally.  If next of kin is Thai body can be released with proof of relationship, but would advise having that information on file with Embassy if possible.

I have a will made by my Thai lawyer stipulating that I want a Buddhist cremation arranged by my Thai wife.

Her and her family know this.I can't imagine any issues popping up but TIT.We,ve already selected the temple. 555

I don't keep large money in the bank and she has my pin #s.

Our assets are mainly gold so no need for probate etc.

In my estate planning I've downloaded and mostly filled out the appropriate forms for her to begin receiving a Survivors Pension from my gov't.

I do believe and hope I didn't overlook anything.

  5. I've been buying stuff from them off and on for about 20+ years.I think the old mom & pop have retired and the son has taken over the reigns. The original owners were always friendly and helpful no matter the malady. I dealt with the son once and he seemed on top of things at the time.

I'd recommend them for sure going by past experience.

  6. While we're on the subject.

We've lived in the same house and mooban for 16 years.Last year the old house next door was knocked down and a 4br "pool villa" built . It's advertised on Booking.com by Chinese investors.

Every 3-4 days a new group arrives and and it's party time.Getting woken up at 3am is no joke, when they get back from the clubs they head directly into the pool which is on the side that abuts our br. I'm investing 40k on new laminated widows in the hope it works.

Apparently we can complain to city hall...but how effective will that be?

At any rate its a residential area and not commercial.Isn't it basically a hotel?

    I'm not very optimist...anyone?

I thought this was a joke post but the OP is actually serious, get a life. If you are that cheap you could have gotten your dollars upfront outside of the country too, and once you have dollars, you can just pay in dollars anywhere too, no need to change it. Whining over 120 riels, 0,029 USD cents lol.

Even you would lose 20 dollars on your exchanged money, you get cheap beers that earn it back already after 10.

Agreed,I spent a month in PP earlier this year.I bought USD with THB in LOS before I left.

It was easy from there on in.No hassles with changing money and painless as things were mostly less expensive in some places.

Arrive with USD cash is my advice. To be honest I never tried an ATM withdrawal so I can't speak about fees.

  9. My stepdaughter works at King Power. They are down in sales significantly. They are juggling staff between Pattaya, Bangkok and U Tapao every month. The heyday is over for them.

She says some days her sales are zero or only a couple thou.

Pre CV several tour busses would arrive each day and her sales topped out at 200k per month.

I've advised her to have a plan"B" just in case.

My main interest in this is how are they going to assess the amount of money you bring in to Thailand. In my case, most of it never sees a Thai bank account.

In my case my pensions total about 70k/ month. My tax free amount is around 400k/year.(400 div by 12) =33k transferred into my bank acct and 37k in cash from an ATM for living expenses. There's my 70k. That just might work.

A motorbike is part of expat life otherwise you will be restricted to the baht bus and most likely spend most of your time within a square mile

Good point. When I 1st came to retire here I moved into Diana Estates because of thre location right in the guts of the action.

After 1 year it got old and I moved further afield.

You correctly said it, I spent most of my time withing 1 mile of the place.I never needed a bike/car but used baht bus all the time or walked.

Extending bar trading to 4AM won't add one baht to the economy. Tourists have $X to spend on food and booze and if they do so at 3AM or 4AM they will spend less next day or later. All this will do is make the current breed of badly behaved idiots even more obnoxious, with a great increase in violence plus damage to health and safety. I am on the side of the cops. Who needs even more booze after 2AM? If they do, then they could drink in their rooms.

Just what we need. They knocked down the old house next to ours and built a big 4br "pool villa" available on Booking.com.So will the 3 am pool parties we suffer now become all nighters? Not a damn thing we can do about it.When we complain to the owner she says call me and I'll stop them. She never replies to our complaints until the next day.

Seriuosly thinking of selling up and moving after 16 yrs in this house.TIT, but where is it guaranteed to be quiet? Sleepless in Pattaya. It was a very quiet moo ban until this Chinese invasion. The new owners are investors and not residents and therefore don't give a rats ass.

I remember last year that after paying the 1900 baht i was given yet another number and told to wait for passport....but the wait then was maybe 20 minutes....it is absurdly obvious that by the time u get to the pay money stage that all your docs and copies have been gone over 3 or 4 times already so stamp the damn visa in there give me my passport and be done with it.  But NO.  Go wait some more.

Talking to several other guys there and we decided the reason they do this is to make it as inconvenient as possible to encourage more use of agents to increase the bribe $$ they receive from various agents....not sure but if that is the goal but they sure have figured out how to make it all a total clusterfxxk....

I've been saying that for years. They want you to use an agent. It's easy $ for them.Cash deal. When you do it by the book its more difficult to skim. I did my own for many years until 1 time after yet another run around I switched to using an agent.FYI I compared both signatures and they are identical?

If I am not mistaken.. The new tax laws only apply to those foreigners who generate income in another country and transfer it to Thailand. Those who get retirement benefits as their source of income will not be required to pay tax.. Those who paid tax already in their country where the income was earned can not be charged 2 times so will not have to pay tax also. So most foreigners who have retired to Thailand will not need to worry about paying this tax. This was my understanding of it when I read the new laws.

Someone is welcome to correct me if i am mistaken

I tend to agree with your statement. However in my case the Canadian tax authority deems that my pension income is below a certain threshold and states in a letter that I should pay zero income tax which I do not.My pensions are tax free.

My concern is whether or or not the Thai RD will acknowledge this detemination or will they insist on some tax?
