Has anyone here at Thai Visa ever tried to obtain a license / permit before entering the country ?

I would be more than happy to pay for the ability to bring in more than one liter of wine just so I don't have to drink the fruit wines imported and sold in the retail stores here

By "fruit wines" I guess you mean wines produced from ummmmm .... fruit .... such as grapes??

From my point of view there is absolutely no point in importing Wine for personal consumption (i.e. for non-commercial trade) into Thailand: There are many Companies now selling very good quality wine etc. here in Bangkok, admittedly at a premium price, but for me at least the convenience of having decent Wine / Port / Malt Whisky, whatever, delivered to my door far exceeds the hassle of trying to drag it though Customs myself with all the associated paperwork.

  2. I used to use the Villa on Soi 33/1 and at Paradise Park, Srinakharin Road quite frequently but getting a little lazy as I grow older I now more regularly use On-line services who deliver - like Tesco, Bunters' Foods, Passion Delivery and Wine-now.com, all extremely convenient and reliable.

I agree that you have to check the expiry dates on food at Villa too!

  3. Slightly off-topic but you may like to take note:

The Festival is called "Songkran" (สงกรานต์ in Thai) not Songkram - Songkram (สงคราม in Thai) means "War" or "Battle". (Which, to be honest, is sadly what Songkran has become in recent years, at least in some parts of the Country!).

    Ridiculous comment. "This is Thailand".

    Absolute nonsense.

Sorry to disappoint you but I have no ATM nor a Credit Card in Thailand, and I have my personal reasons for that, which I not gonna explain here.

But you mean that now everyone is forced to get either an ATM, debit or Credit card if he wants to receive the correct change when he goes shopping.......right?

I must have missed that new law.

Not to be pedantic (OK, maybe a little!) but the suggestion to use a Credit Card was so that you pay the exact amount charged, you don't get change using a CC.

If you have "personal reasons" for not obtaining and using a Thai CC (despite the fact that you apparently have Foreign base Cards) then I guess you will just have to accept being "ripped off" for 25 Stangs or so every time you shop.

Did you realise that most foreigners in Thailand are unable to get a Thai credit card, unless they freeze a significant sum of money with the bank, and why would anyone pay an extra credit card cost to shop for groceries?

I agree it's not necessarily easy for a Foreigner to get a Credit Card in Thailand, depending on the Bank etc., but it's definitely not impossible, you just need to shop around.

Plus, who pays "extra" to use a Credit Card to shop for groceries?! I use my AMEX and Visa Cards several times a month at Tesco and Villa etc. and have never been charged a Fee by them, it's a cost the Vendor bears.

DHL intentionally route all of their inbound (Thailand) shipments of parcels etc through Thai customs...then the extortion levying of import duty commences with DHL receiving a back hander from Customs....bore down in amongst it and you will find DHL staff making a shit load more than their monthly salaries

Do you have any evidence that DHL (or indeed any Courier) receives "backhanders" from the Thai Customs Department for Import Duty payments?

    It's an oft-quoted urban myth.

If you are charged Import Duty (and VAT of course) on any Import you should receive a Thai Government Official Receipt detailing exactly what has been charged. (OK, if you don't receive that Official Receipt then you should definitely dispute the transaction)

That said however if you receive this Receipt - now a blue form - you can be sure the payment has been properly accounted for in the Customs Department and Revenue Departments records - there is virtually no way these payments can be diverted to the Courier Company, much less an individual on their staff.

The fact is that DHL, UPS, whoever, are COURIER COMPANIES, they make their money on point-to-point Freight and related charges; that's their revenue stream.

When a shipment arrives in Thailand they simply accept the Thai Customs Department calculations of Import Duty and pass it on to you, the Customer. They have absolutely NO interest in disputing these charges, wasting their Staff time and resources - and therefore their own money - with absolutely NO benefit to themselves.

Rottweilers are very loyal and docile if bred correctly  I used to have one and she would never hurt anyone, no matter what they did to her. (Unless I gave "order" to do so.)

So, just to be clear, - you trained your "docile" Rottweiler to attack someone, anyone, on your "order"?

That sounds extremely irresponsible to me but perhaps I am missing something?

I think that you missed the part that described the fire that caused the closure, the bridge's closure had nothing at all to do with "delays or time wasting".

By "delays and time wasting" I was referring to the fact that the Bridge was only ever meant to be a temporary installation and a permanent, properly constructed Bridge was supposed to replace it in very short order.

That never happend; but if it HAD been replaced then the fire would not have caused such damage to the Bridge.

    Patrick

  10. I may be wrong but I am fairly sure I remember that this "Mecano", bolt together bridge, was built in just a few days and was always intended to be a temporary structure; eventually - shortly in fact - to be replaced by a more permanent structure.

Obviously that never happened - but it has been "refurbished" and "resurfaced" many times over the past 30 years or so.

Now, after years of delay and time-wasting we finally arrive at the point where the bridge must be closed and Bangkok citizens have to accept the horrendous traffic consequences.

I missed my Tee time at the RBSC this morning!

Seeing as so many musicians had warned the Trump campaign not to use their music during his rallies and the fact that so many had criticized Trump publicl during the election,, it's surprising that Trump and his entire team of geniuses hadn't anticipated this problem and planned a different kind of inauguration from the get go to avoid this embarrassment.

I absolutely agree with you there.

Uh, yeah. Tell that to Trump. He was the one most worked up about it, till he changed tack to say he didn't want any of the glitter anyway.

Yeah. Tell that toTtrump as well:

“…[D]ay one – which I will consider to be Monday as opposed to Friday or Saturday. Right? I mean my day one is gonna be Monday because I don’t want to be signing and get it mixed up with lots of celebration,”

From Times of of London interview:
    http://www.thetimes.co.uk/article/full-transcript-of-interview-with-donald-trump-5d39sr09d

Nothing in my Post is "Trump specific", I'm referring to what I consider the unnecessary and, to me, rather undignified spectacle which ALL inaugurations now appear to deem essential.

" I'd admire any President who simply took the Oath of Office then turned around and went into the White House to begin doing the job for which he was elected. " (emphasis added to assist you).

  14. This is a ceremony to inaugurate the President of the Leader of the worlds' most powerful Democracy; it's not half time at the Superbowl.

OK, some Politicians and "Activists" will sulk and not turn up - their choice - but why beg Actors and Singers to contribute to the occasion, and give them the opportunity to showcase their Community College inculcated "political opinions" by accepting or refusing?

I'd admire any President who simply took the Oath of Office then turned around and went into the White House to begin doing the job for which he was elected.

Don't you have to pack your own parachute ?

Of course not - unless, as a newbie Jumper, you have a death wish.

"Packing" a parachute is not particularly difficult once you know some basics, and packing a Standard TU Canopy is not really a problem; even then however no responsible Jump Master would ever consider allowing a new recruit to do such a thing.

That said, if this chap was a new Jumper - as it seems - I cannot understand why the Canopy did not open. He should have been Jumping on a "Static Line" which would have automatically ripped the Canopy from his Backpack a few seconds after he left the 'plane - even if the man was unconscious,

The source is the ministry of Labour and code of foreign workers act as well as BOI- Board of foreign investment. I'm still waiting for the answer about whether or not the capital can be put up in other options other than cash. But I suspect you don't know. Thanks but I'm going with the law on this one. Again it is ridiculous to think you can pay the 10,000 Baht fee to register 2 million baht of capital without having the money. Ludicrous and justly unfounded advice.

Registered Capital and Paid up Capital are two different things as has already been mentioned.

However, "Paid up Capital" does NOT need to be Cash in the Bank, it can comprise any Assets - Stock, Property - even "Goodwill" owned by the Company or transferred to the Company by a Shareholder in lieu of Cash.

When I last formed a Company here - 7 years ago and with just 3 Shareholders as the minimum required - the Shareholders only had to produce evidence that they actually possessed  the funds to purchase their allotted Shares at the time the Company was Registered; in every case the evidence required was simply copies of the Shareholders personal Bank Statements, it was not necessary to transfer the Funds into the Company Bank Account. That said, things are tightening up lately so that may no longer be acceptable.

The "Loan to Director" idea used to be common but, again as already mentioned, this too is being more closely looked at by Authorities.
