  1. I thought blue lights signified a transexual (in the context of a red-light district) - anyone know ?

Yikes... I suddenly remembered what the combination of Blue and Yellow signifies in Thailand. Oh well. :D

In fact, many of us would think "POLICE !". You could make that the theme of your garden party :D

    Ah.. now there's a thought..!

    japanese_police.jpg:o

  2. question is, would you rather have your old fart life with kid, wifey & chrissy tree or go back to puking your guts up at 4am & waking up alone or once the lady from the night before has left spend your time alone?

Ah. Well, when you have the one you want the other and vice versa.

    Cases of Human Nature..

  3. Agree with the above.. You could rent in Mae Hong Son, but as most of the attractions are in between Chiang Mai and Mae Hong Son anyways, just rent in Chiang Mai where rents are competitive and drive.

You could do a loop through MHS and back to Chiang Mai.

Sometimes with the real cheap cars though you get what you pay for.. When going on a long trip it may be worth getting a slightly newer vehicle.

A good local company is www.northwheels.com Budget is also good but you need to hunt down the discounts. (Say you're a resident, and ask. :o

  4. The problem wi fookin American English is nae wan can <deleted> understand it, ya know what a mean like?

Even the Thais are pickin up bleedin words from American, now what the friggers is a 'condominium' man? Before i came tae Thailand a thought it wis something ye bought for a quid in the toilet, tae stick on yer wee willy before a good old session wi some slapper doon the park!

In ma idea like, thai-visa should make it policey that aw the posters right in proper decent English-english, nun of that American lubbish!

    LOL..!!! Brilliant!

  5. okay does anybody here know of anyone personally that was lynched, beaten to a pulp etc? If so can you provide a link to a newspaper article, police report etc. One thing for sure is that rumours are wild out here. Not suggesting it never happens but willing to bet not as often as suggested here

The only example I can think of was that rich-kid who repeatedly used his Benz to run over pedestrians and killed one.

I would hope that at least none of the valued readership here would sink to THAT level.

  6. A friend of mine used to work for the German goverment here in Thailand and their advice was to leave straight away and sort it out later if anything ever came back to them. Basically leave and save yourself, i know i would do the same if it happened to me.

but imagine if the one that they are leaving lying on the road is your relative, may God forbid, what would you feel?

Believe the US Gov' advises the same for their personel working here in LOS as well as large multinational companies

Link? Source? If 'multinational companies' put any of that in writing then they may well be prosecuted back home.

    Most replies make me sick.

I hope none of you are ever involved in an accident that involves my family AND then leave them to die on the road, or I will track you down to the end of your days. Bunch of potential criminals here. And people are wondering why Farangs are increasingly seen in bad light.

And then the smug hypocrisy of it all.. Absolutely *EVERY* newspaper clipping relating about a traffic accident on this forum has a couple smug individuals make references to 'Somchai fleeing the scene', no matter if the driver actually fled or not. It's apparently very funny even when it involves mishaps with airplanes or other vehicles.. And now we learn that most of you would do the exact same thing?? :o

  7. Well.. If a coup depends on if the election results in the military-favoured (some might say puppets) to be elected, then what's the value of an election anyway.. It's just a facade in that case, with no matter who gets elected always needing to check back with certain influential figures.

So I didn't vote.. Also, the country is already run by a military junta, so it wouldn't even require another coup, just stepping up the crackdown on democratic forces / the people.

  8. I mean, what else do you call a person who strings Christmas lights through some pine-like trees in the garden. Or a person who even HAS a (*$(&(@# garden.

It's weird. You're 30-something, going on 4-O, you're at a Home Improvement Store. (The thought of even BEING at such a place at all was unthinkable mere months ago.. :o )

And then.. They're there. Suddenly. Christmas lights. 30 (THIRTY) baht for a string. Is the Devil, or worse, the Church sponsoring these.. How can Christmas lights cost 30 baht! In various colors. I tried to resist.. but... Old-fartishness won. I was thinking how the kid would like it, how it would bring brightness in the dark days of winter, how it would illuminate my upcoming New Years party.. A c@cks#$#cking GARDEN party, mind, with friends who by and large also have kids or at least are married or in a meaningful relationship..

In just a few years you go from properly vomiting your guts out in the city moat at 4am after an awesome party with mayem & girls everywhere.. And look at the state of things now. :D

At least I'm in Chiang Mai already, the Great Farang Retirement Home.

  9. Well, fortunately Farlang Thaivisa members don't vote. :o

From one farangutan to another, bully for that.

Why would believers-in-democracy think it is good or fortunate, that some human beings resident in Thailand, are not allowed to express their opinions by voting ? Surely not because they disagree with the way they would vote ?

I don't think it's strange that only citizens of a particular country can vote? Personally I'm on a Non-Immigrant visa. That means I'm not an immigrant. In my country too, people who aren't citizens can't vote.

A couple people do actually get Thai citizenship.. After that they can vote.

To me, the real issue is that this procedure is so hard, not the election laws per se which are sensible in this regard.

  10. I'm officially not married.. No problem whatsoever on the birth certificate.

For my country though (not British) they require that I recognize the baby BEFORE birth. I don;t think Britain requires this. But for any other nationality, check with your embassy before birth if there's anything you need to do.

  11. 1. If I wanted to make my own daily Thai Language or English language Thailand News show and air it on my website, would I need a work permit for that?

Not if you don't do it in Thailand. Of course with an Internet site this is hard to check, so it wouldn't be much of an issue.

1A. If I were to accept money for advertisements from Thai based companies, would I then need a work permit?

Yes, then you'd need a work permit. And you'd need to pay tax on it. And possibly it would make sense to set up a company.

    2. Would I need some kind of license to do this? I know the government limits the amount of telesivion stations but I don't know if they limit internet broadcasts.

LOL.. No. The only thing is that if it's a Thai domain (like something ending in ...co.th) then you will need a company and jump through some hoops, but difficult it is not. And besides, no need to get a .co.th domain; loads of popular Thai sites have a regular .com domain. Like this one. But also say teenee.com, sanook.com and so on.

    3. Would I have to submit the content to a censorboard or some government offical to make sure its peachy enough?

No. If it's not peachy they'll find you. :o

  12. I figured I would come across as stuffy, and I apologize for that. But I'd like to make a few additional points. I don't, I regret, agree that the "standard" (another stuffy term) of contributions is terrific. This forum should indeed be THE spot to get Chiang Mai info.

If you know of a better one then I'd like to hear about it.

There's a whole lot wrong with Thaivisa at the moment, but the one thing that stands out I think is the Chiang Mai forum. Don't believe me? Try it. Ask a question; any question. I absolutely guarantee that it will get answered.

Depending on the nature of the question it may also result in some chatting & banter, but such is the spice of life. In the end though, your question got answered, and isn't that what it's all about?

So far you've made two meta-posts, i.e. posts about other people's posts.. How about just diving in and join the party/discussion..

Obviously, contributions will vary. I know that. And some people have a more enjoyable sense of humor (Especially hard in text messages!) than others. I'd be delighted to stand a round, but not here.

Well, that's cool too. Again if you know of a better place for CHIANG MAI info then I'd like to hear it. (I know plenty better places for select topics such as travel in Thailand, construction in Thailand, nightly entertainment in Thailand and so on. But if you ever needed to know anything about Chiang Mai, THIS is the place.

Fundamental information is lacking in some basic categories.

Well, it's a FORUM, not an encyclopedia.. The aim is not to create a library of facts. That reminds me, someone should start a Chiang Mai-wiki.

This could be THE place to go.

This IS the place to go. Keeping in mind of course that nothing can be everything to everyone.
