  1. I came across this video the other day and I found it quite interesting. Alton Brown on how he lost quite a bit of weight. I like his 4 list approach. Very simple, no calorie counting. He doesn't mention an exercise program however it would make sense to undertake one.

    I always remember reading somewhere you can solve your entire weight problem with four words, Eat less, move more.

  2. Thanks for all these replies guys. I have two choices. I can increase to 10mb and it's only an extra 50 baht per month (Bt650) but I have to lock in for a year. TOT will then give their basic IPTV for zilch but there's not much of interest there to me. After that start paying more if you want better channels. They say I only need 3 mb to run IPTV flawlessly and that will probably work as it would becoming from their own server in Thailand.

    The second choice is fibre optic starting at 20 mb and costing about Bt1500 a month. I like the idea of trying to nail them down as to a guaranteed speed however I doubt they will do that.

    I will check out those links Pib posted tomorrow.

    Is any using a specific VPN they can recommend?

  3. Last night I was trying to stream a BBC News video and it kept stopping to buffer. So I did a speed test. Turns out I get two very different results depending on the whereabouts of the server I ping. Within Thailand I get a download speed of 7.3 mb yet when I ping a server in Europe or the US it dropped to 0.5mb.

    Just now I did another speed test. A bit better from overseas but not much. Results are:

    Server in Thailand download 7311 kbps

    Server in the US 2438 kbps, last night 2300 hours 538 kbps

    I am using TOT and there is no alternative provider in our moo baan. So why the completely different results? I am thinking of getting IPTV yet with these overseas results that would not be feasible.

  4. Depending to which Oishi place you go to it is normal to pay for up front. Oishi Grand in town has to be one of the best buffets, value for money wise in BKK. What I don't like is that you cannot book and it is not unusual to have to wait for a couple of hours. Having said that there is no excuse for maggots anywhere unless you order them of course.

    It may be 'normal' to you - but I wouldn't. What are they (and their customers) thinking?

    It is not normal to me, it is normal to all patrons. Try going to Oishi at the Major Complex (opposite Central Pinklao or Oishi Grand in town and tell them you will pay at the end of your allowed time. The only Oishi outlets I know where you pay when you are finished are Shabu Shi. Please correct me if I am wrong.

  5. A member of my Thai family sold non FDA approved drugs in his outlet. Not fake viagra but birth control pills and other 'medicinals'. He was even selling cooking oil in plastic bags also non FDA approved. All against Thai law, well supposedly. A new head cop moved in town and he promptly raided the place, actually turned up with a truck and confiscated the lot. Long story short my brother in law paid this shit a Bt50K fee so that the matter would not go to court and now continues to pay a monthly 10K fee to stay open.

    Why would anyone buy fake viagra when you can go to most pharmacies and get Thai made Sidegra (4 tablets for Bt180) usually without a script?

  7. I've been in Thailand almost 3 years, and this is what I've experienced in terms of inflation:

    Rent = stayed the same (my largest expense)

    Food = not sure, as I don't remember the prices from 3 years ago

    Internet = same price

    Electricity = has gone up, but not sure by has much as the bill is confusing

    Phone (fixed line) = same price

    Water = same price per unit

    Taxis = same price

    BTS = price went up by 5-10% (depending on the trip)

    Movie tickets = I think its the same price, but not sure

    Massage = seems to be the same

    TVs = price actually gone down for a 32 inch flat screen TV

    Immigration "tax" = same (1,900 baht)

    Conclusion:

    There is some inflation, but it's not that high.

    This is a very good post. You need to determine inflation by your own consumption.

  8. Thailand does have a particular problem with regard to drug resistant STIs, worse than in mopst countries.

    Thai doctors when treating other illnesses not only overuse antibiotics (pretty much a universal issue) but also tend to prescribe them for an insufficient time period which is not so universal and definitely adds to the risk of resistance. It also means that in cases where the antibiotic really was (a) necessary and (cool.png the right drug, the desired cure may not be achieved. (And, the same abx may not work against same bug next time).

    What Sheryl says is quite correct, however there is one more aspect that compounds the issue. Many people correctly prescribed the right antibiotic and course for a particular situation stop taking the antibiotics before they complete the full course due to the fact that they feel better. You should always complete the entire course regardless of whether you feel okay or not.

  9. My wife watches this 'commercial' over and over. Makes me watch it with her. Supposed to be a true story yet........ The bit I cannot understand is how a simple noodle seller ended up in a private hospital and then in a private room. Wouldn't he have been taken to government hospital? Something is missing here and that is not to say the story is false.

    Great story though, I was quite emotional after watching it the first time. I completely missed the fact it was an ad for True, not that I care much for True anyway.
