  1. My friend has a small hotel and a couple of days ago got the I'd like to book 6 rooms at your facility by my VISA CARD scam, not knowing any different she replied and recieved a response asking for to charge for the rooms and also take out 142,000 baht for the rooms and 300,000 baht and transfer it to a "logistics company" to pay for the travel.

When I found out I told her not to make any further contact, but since then she's had a couple of dodgy looking bookings coming from two seperate e mail addresses ([email protected]), when I googled it it comes up linked to scams.

Anyboby out there have any experience with this of thing.

    Thanks.

Check the "Group Hotel Reservation Scam" part in this page: http://www.freemaninstitute.com/419new.htm.

But there are many other sites speaking about this kind of scam. Several friends of mine who are resort and guesthouse owners regularly receive fake bookings requesting special arrangements for the payment. Just ignore those and stand with your usual business practice on those matters.

  2. ... As for the guy who wants to know what to do with all the judges, politicians, etc., I can think of several suggestions. I have a sense of humor too.

Yep. That might be interesting, but probably much less than a detailed description of what is your ideal form of society.

It is true not all Americans think alike. Some of them think like sheep also.

As for the crime rate in Canada, I have been there many times. There is not much there worth stealing.

I hope that it is just a sample of your good sense of humor, isn't it? By the way, following your "logic", every nation should be granted the right to have weapons of mass destruction... just in case a bunch of heavily armed foreign burglars try to break in their country.

  3. The DVD CD Drive on my home computer has become very slow to reconise a disk.

Now when I put a disk in to view anything it is taking forever to open it ?

Everything els on my computer is fine, only this very slow to reconise disk problem.

Is there a way to speed things up to what they were before ?

It could be because of a recently installed program and/or update for instance. If you can identify it, try to uninstall it. Otherwise, I would try to clean the registry, for instance with CCleaner (which is free) and see if things improve.

  4. ... Gun or not, if anyone breaks into my house I will do my best to kill them, gun or not, rather than wait around for them to kill me or my family. That is the American way, and I believe it is the Thai way too.

Fortunately, not all Americans think and act alike. And the following is for those (and I know many!) who have a good sense of humor...

As for the other points, I don't want to repeat arguments of others or myself again. Read above and tell us what to do with all those useless judges, policemen, military men, governments, law makers, attorneys, etc...

  5. I like some comments on IPSTAR from those people who have it here in Thailand.

It apparently works fine for a VERY few customers. As for myself, I don't even like to think about it. I suffered with that pathetic rip off service for four years. When I found out I had EDGE in my area I canceled the Shitstar.

EDGE through my cell phone is not that great but it is better than Shitstar EVER was.

What a bullocks. IP STAR works fine, the problems are caused by TOT engineers who do not know a shit. If you get it from SHIN it is more expensive but works without a glitch. If you are lucky enough to have a good TOT engineer it works fine too. Edge from AIS is rubbish, from DTAC acceptable but is soooooooo slow. Than you better use CDMA from CAT or so. Never mind it is obviously you do not have a clue.

No. iPStar as it is provided by TOT or CSLoxinfo does not work fine here (even if it has improved in the recent years), especially during the rainy season ("Lost Network Synchronization. / Logging off. / Login failed -- retrying / Login failed. Waiting before retry... / Waiting for link to settle. / Link did not settle. Retrying / Missed system message, retrying...").

    3aeae47318.jpg

One of my friends is still a TOT customer for iPStar and I was myself a CSLoxinfo customer till September 2007 (I live elsewhere since and fortunately, don't have to use their "service" anymore!). In both companies, the customer service is really poor and their "engineers" often tell blatant lies and bullshits.

I never called them for support but because it was a mandatory step to later obtain (with much difficulties and lengthy e-mails and phone calls) partial refunds (and I had quite a few because they were - and probably still are - unable to provide their service as advertised, but what a loss of time and their compensation process sucks big time too, lasting months before the refund is taken into consideration in a later bill!). And because I am an IT engineer myself, I've been able to prove on every case that the problem was not on my side. So, no, it is certainly not the customer's fault most of the time!

  6. Yes - but there's more questions than answers here isn't there
A PATTAYA WOMAN TRIES TO END IT ALL AFTER FIGHT WITH HER FRENCH HUSBAND

On 18 October, 2008, at 00.30 pm, police and Sawangboriboon Rescue received notification of an attempted suicide by a distraught woman in Soi Pattaya 13 / 1 [soi Yamoto]. A response team was duly sent to the scene.

At the scene of the incident, the team found Mrs. Rada Art-Glah (33), a bar woman, who was in an intoxicated condition after drinking a non-poisonous floor cleaning liquid. She was crying and highly upset, while her friend was trying to comfort her.

Her friend explained to police that Mrs. Rada had had a serious argument with her French boyfriend who she has been living with for over 5 years. Mrs. Rada was really upset so she decided to drink half of bottle of the floor cleaning liquid in the mistaken impression that she would manage to end it all. However, the fluid only caused her a severe stomach upset and further anguish. The rescue team gave her first aid before rushing her to hospital.

    From Pattaya Daily News

hold on ..........shes a mrs??? so got a husband already and her boyfriend was french..........maybe he found out he was taking care of her and her husband :o

How many Thai girls have the surname Art-Glah? Was said frenchie actually her husband?

Love the phrase 'a bar-woman'. Quality reporting as ever!

"Art-Glah" does not look like a French surname either... "Art" alone maybe...

  7. ... Looking at places like Iraq and Afghanistan now, and you can see the same problem. So many people have weapons that even a small percentage of them engaging in hostilities can bog down huge armies.

    ...

Iraq? Oh, you mean the country where weapons of mass destruction were supposed to be menacing the rest of the "free" World? Then, as an individual, I should be allowed to declare a "preventive" war to my neighbor because I suppose that he may have a bazooka at home? Anyway, even if he does not have one, he's a bad guy and his home would be a far better place if it follows my own rules... :D

    ....

With or without guns, we will still find ways to destroy ourselves. Our instinct to survive will quickly outweigh our morals and we will be back to tribal/jungle mode (Us against them/Survival of the Fittest). You can pretty much guarantee that those who are armed will out-survive those that aren't.

Wow! That's a very "optimistic" vision of our future. Let's happily live just like in prehistoric times! I have to agree that hunting the mammoths will be far more efficient with my neighbor's bazooka... provided that I can find the dam_n thing (the bazooka, I mean, not the mammoths!). :o

  8. Now shall we pull out the Pattaya City News with its daily recounting of death in Thailand by.. .

    knives,

    broken bottles,

    baseball bats,

    balcony-pushings,

and most pervasive of all--idiot drivers?

Gun control won't reform or restrain dark hearts. They'll always find a tool to do you in, even if it's their bare hands.

I did not say that gun control ALONE is the solution. But no gun control is certainly a problem.

  9. The more a society is polished and civilized, the less its citizens would need to own a fire arm or other kind of weapon. Police and military forces exist for a reason (and judiciary systems too!).

If it's illegal to own a firearm it's also more difficult for the potential criminals to find and keep one. And whether it is legal or not in your country of residence, having one at home makes you a potential murderer (guns are made for killing humans and/or animals: it's their main and first functionality) and it should not be your job to "protect and serve" anyone unless you're a member of the police / army forces.

If you feel the need to have one firearm at home, it's because you don't trust your local law enforcement forces enough to protect you, and that's the REAL problem. At the end of the day, guns are NOT the solution. They are IMHO symptomatic of uncivilized and/or inequitable and/or corrupted and/or underdeveloped civilizations, times, societies... The Law of the Strongest (or of those who have the "biggest" - pun intended - weapon) as in the good old and wild times? Democracy is pointless then and why don't get rid off all those useless judges, lawyers, policemen, military men, governments (etc.)?

Most gun owners I know in the USA are hunters and they hunt for food. I owned guns and didn't hunt but loved to go out and target practice. Why would this make us less "polished and civilized"? Target shooting is an olympic sport.

Come on! All gun owners are only hunters or have one just for practicing target shooting? Highly doubtful. In several countries, you can buy a gun for hunting and/or target shooting too but you will need to obtain a legal license (It's certainly not as easy as in the USA for instance) before being allowed to acquire a firearm. And then, firearm owners represent only a very low percentage of the population.

By the way, the "polished and civilized" part of my previous post was not an attack against any particular country, but a general remark that certainly makes sense when studying the History of each civilization.

  10. Guns are designed for one purpose and one purpose only, TO KILL.

In peacetime other than those who are in the armed services such a police and military, there is no legit reason why anyone should carry arms.

There are many ways of securing property and for those who believe they maybe subject to deadly attacks and having access to deadly weapons is the only solution, is extreme paranoia, the philosophy of the ignorant.

Well said, indeed. I was (slowly) writing my own previous post (and it takes long as English is not my mother tongue) and you posted yours in the meanwhile that exactly summarizes what I wanted to say.

  12. CCleaner is tricky in the sense it can remove too much, like all your saved Internet passwords. You have to be selective on what you want removed.

    ...

Yes. You need to know what you are doing when using this tool but it's not that difficult to keep your "saved passwords" (= your authentication cookies in this case: just deselect "cookies" and you should be OK). Anyway it is NOT a good policy (IMHO) to be dependent on having them stored on a specific computer (disk crash can happen and you may have to reenter them again later, or you probably need to remember your passwords if you want to access certain websites from another computer, etc.) and remote cookie stealing may happen too... Never have had a problem with CCleaner so far, but sure, as most tools, you must know and understand what you are doing.

  13. ...

And I too really don't like to make generalisations, but, I have found that French nationals who have managed to leave their home country to explore the rest of the world end up as much nicer people when they come to the realisation that nobody outside of France actually wants to speak French.

    ...

Wow! You should say that (for instance) to our friends from Quebec! :o:D Anyway, I agree that French nationals (but it's certainly true about the citizens of every country in the World) who have traveled abroad are usually way more open-minded and far less arrogant than the others... I am not alone to be sometimes ashamed of the attitude of some of my fellow countrymen, but hopefully, it should improve in the future.

It has nothing to do with post cost, if he follows the above steps he will post a picture.

    Read here: http://www.thaivisa.com/forum/Posting-Phot...00#entry2296300

It has to do with the number of his posts because his pictures are located on external websites. It should be OK now that he has posted 5 messages. Anyway, I don't have much merit on this one because I recently joined too and encountered a similar problem the first time I tried to post an URL...

  16. Can someone tell me how to post a photo image to the forum. I've been here an hour or so and still no joy. Whats with the add a photo image icon if I keep getting the message "Do not post URL's Grrrrrrrrrrr! There must be a 1 to 5 step guide some where out there but I haven't found it yet.

My photos are either saved to my Blog or Piccasa web albumns. Any help much appreciated.

    Cheers

I think that you are not allowed to post an URL unless you've posted more than 5 messages. It's probably to avoid spam from certain new members.

  17. Can anyone give any helpful advice on how i can divorce my wife in her absence?

All my Thai friends say cannot, but surely there must be a way?

Shes been gone a year, apart from a brief (3 weeks) return a few months back. Now she has changed her phone number and her family don't know (or won't tell me) where she is.

We have a daughter which may make a difference.

    Cheers in advance

    Tony

Do a google for: thai civil and commercial code book

Several hits, here's one, says online, but I didn't check it: http://www.samuiforsale.com/Civil_Code_text_English_I.html

I bought the hard copy book at Asia Books and looks like they still have it. You in Bangkok? If so check one of their several branches, if not on hand they can check their computer and have one sent to that branch.

    http://www.asiabooks.co.th/browse/cat.asp?...z&subcat=zt

The book is good, Thai on one page and English on the facing page, article by article.

My now wife needed a divorce lots of years ago and went with the "abandonment clause" something like not seen for five (5) years. Since it was a one-party divorce, needed to go to court.

    Mac

    Cheers Mac!

    I discovered this there...

Thailand Law: Civil and commercial code (part lll)

Section 1516. Grounds of action for divorce are as follows:

    (4) one spouse has deserted the other for more than one year, the latter may enter a claim for divorce

    :D

    There you have it then...

A year from when i last saw her.... dam_n, that was September 20th when i visited them in Hua Hin.

11 months to go then. Unless, by deserted they mean when she first ran off.. December 4th 2007 in which case would they count the 3 weeks she came back...?

    :o

Better to check it with a lawyer again as he/she will be able to answer all these questions probably in one meeting, but I suppose that you should have declared her desertion at your local police station... (almost one year ago as it seems). I don't believe that your own declaration (about her departure time) alone will be taken into account, but again, check it with a Thai lawyer (a few thousand bahts, probably only 2000 for having a precise idea of what to do as soon as possible).

  18. Hmm,

My wife just started back in construction, she pays salaries between 200 and 290 Baht/day. They work 8 hours a day, anything more is overtime at 150%.

They take days of as they wish since they are paid per day (not a monthly fixed salary).

Couple of boxes of Chang a month to keep them happy as well, and free pig on spit on New Years eve :o

A few years ago (2004), construction workers were usually paid in large construction projects around 150-160 baht in Northeastern Thailand (10 hours of work per day). It was possible to later recruit some of these workers for an individual house construction project and pay them by task (a fixed amount paid once a specific phase is finished).

  19. Yes it happens with all my dvd/cds all of which I have previously played on this laptop.

Check if you can see your DVD drive in the Device Manager (Right click on "Start" button, then select "Explore", right click on "My Computer" icon, select "Properties" and click on the "Device Manger" button in the "Hardware" tab). If you can not see it, you should try to power off your laptop, unplug the AC/DC adapter and remove the battery. Then, try to remove the DVD drive and plug it again. Plug the battery and AC/DC adapter again, and check if it is recognized and works correctly now.

If you can see the DVD drive in the Device Manager (with no error/warning), you can try to update the driver first. If it does not improve the situation, try to delete the driver and then, force your computer to scan for hardware changes (it should be the last small icon on the right just under the menu in the Device Manager window).

If you still have the problem after those operations, the problem may be a physical defect on the DVD drive itself (need to be repaired or replaced then), but you can still check your registry settings (have a look at CCleaner for instance, it's a freeware tool that allows you to clean a lot of unneeded stuff in your PC) and if virus or other malware programs are present in your computer (Free anti-virus: AVG, Antivir, Avast...; Free anti-spyware: SpyBot, Spyware Doctor, Spyware Terminator...; Free anti-adware: Ad-Aware; use your favorite search engine to find those tools if necessary...).

You certainly can. But my advice would be to consult a Thai lawyer first. I know a good one in Nong Khai who speaks English quite well. Just let me know if you need her (it's a woman) phone number and e-mail address.

  21. Hello guys,

i would like to know what ไทยลุยแม่งโลด really means.

i found that comment bellow a picture of members of thai's army On Thai-cambodian Border around the ancient Preah Vihear temple.

in english phonetic i know i can read that "thai loy maaeng lot" and i am also aware that ลุย means something like " to be ready to fight"

แม่ง is a rude interjection used to express extreme disappointment, anger and all sorts of bad tempers

but what about โลด ? i am still deadlocked with that word...i didn't manage to find a meaning which can add some sense...

" thai people are fuc_king ready to fight "may be ok for a good translation..

what do u think about that guys ?

    http://dict.longdo.com/search/%E0%B9%82%E0%B8%A5%E0%B8%94

I suppose that it means "fast" or "quickly" in this context.

  22. Excuse my ignorance but I am relatively new to computing.

I have had no problems playing a CD or DVD on my laptop but until recently, when I inserted a DVD into the drive, it just gives 4 or 5 clicks and then nothing happens. The same applies to a music CD.

Maybe I should supply you with further information which would help.

Any advice or information would be appreciated.

Does it happen with all your CDs and DVDs? Have you tried to play those with another computer?
