I got a CD of hers about 20 years ago because it was great music and arrangements. Didn't know (or care) what she looked like

Same for me. Came to live here in 97, and heard a lovely song being played everywhere in Ubon, and bought the CD.

She is  from Ubon province, and I have been an admirer ever since.

Kindle users have a look at "Book Bub". It sends you a daily email of free ebooks (or specials) available on Amazon. You can select the genre you want to receive and if interested click on the title, and it takes you to Amazon to get it.

Admittedly though, some of the ebooks are not worth reading. I just delete it and open another from my library.

I also receive Book Bub daily, and endorse everything you say,

    Love Voranai's work.

I remember a great show on TV years ago that he had with another great journalist (forget his name) when they both worked for BP and the pair of them would sum up the daily political news in English and absolutely take the p*ss out of the politicians and their behaviour in a most sarcastic fashion. I guess thats why their show didnt last long.

Well said, a much-missed contributor to BP.

Sadly, the wonderful Atiya, who followed the same pattern, also left that paper a year or so ago.

Farang can pay in as well. My name has been on the village list for 18+ years of my 22 years in this village. My wife paid 500 baht 'Entry' fee for me to join. The charge per funeral is 20 baht  here  (Household= 20 baht x 4 pax=80 baht). The fund is currently about 60,000 baht on death. I understand there are no fixed rules and each village can decide (Pooyai Baan) on farang entry to the fund.

Yes, same for me, still paying, in our village 30 baht, despite not still residing there. The fund is a very good idea, helps the bereaved.

As a regular attendee of state hospitals I certainly don't doubt those figures.

If you visit any state hospital any working day you will find hundreds of patients, some of whom have been there since 5 am. You will also see the first line nurse, several in the registration office, several more allocating patients to doctors and perhaps 3 or 4 in the emergency room.

There are normally 2 or 3 per ward working a 12 on, 12 off shift 7 days a week, and that is about it.

In private hospitals, where the pay is higher and the hours shorter, you will find swarms of nurses. You will however pay a lot more in a private hospital than a state hospital for the same treatment and vastly more for the same drugs.

Well said. It is the same at the state hospital I attend. Hard-working,  helpful to this old codger,  and friendly.

  6. In 25 years, I have attended 11 funerals of family members in Ubon, and one  in Bangkok.

Only once was I asked to help financially, by a close nephew who paid me back when his father's insurance was paid out.

From memory, most occasions lasted 3-4 days, mainly to allow time for relatives and friends to travel from other parts of the country.

100%! Several times I attempted to donate blood at our local mobile collection sessions. Each time my diastolic reading was over 100 and, of course, I was rejected. Same day I went to the local nurse who used an ordinary looking automatic machine and got 85. Next time I went to donate I noticed that the large machines (where your whole arm goes in) weren't there. Instead, staff used the small automatic machines. That has been the case ever since and my readings have been acceptable.

When I returned to UK last year my doctors receptionist insisted upon a BP check. She told me to use their large whole arm machine. The reading was outrageous and I was ordered not to leave the surgery until I'd been seen by a doctor. When another reading was taken upon a small automatic machine it was 128/80.

It worries me that the Thai hospitals all seem to use those large whole arm machines!

I am also  an avoider of whole-arm machines. I used to get readings of 200++ /over 120!

Now my appointment card for the hospital always contains the doctor's note -BP Manual, and the regular staff immediately produce the manual machine when they see me.

When attending for my covid injections, I always showed them copies of my appointments plus my hospital book showing manual recordings.

I find all this so laughable:

A chinese businessman, (here legally)? is fleeced out of 10M baht

Results in a trip to Chaeng wattana Immigration, and they pretty much know who they are"? Hmmn.

It is a Major and an RTP NCO.....

They are applying for an arrest warrant today.

The major and his accomplice(s) don't follow the news/listen to the radio or watch TV -so they don't know?

They will arrest him and them.

If they are still in Thailand.........

Nothing like a heads-up on your pending arrest, eh?

According to the other newspaper, three of them reported to their commander, and are being questioned; one did not.

  10. I get mine from a local clinic, 500 baht - the same price for years.

I did ask once at my local hospital, but they were out of stock.

Private hospitals also supply, but more expensive than a local clinic.

Thanks for that - can you post the link it is from please?

    https://www.romanianstartups.com/about-romania/

For many years, Romanian gangs have been "credited" for the vast majority of ATM and bank card frauds throughout the western world.

But only fair to add, that the majority of Romanians with vast technical skills

    work legally!

The delegates from Romania arrived via horse and cart and the Thais on Honda clicks to share their combined IT expertise

    Way off the mark. Take a look at this;

Romania is the leader in Europe, and sixth in the world, in terms of the number of certified IT specialists, with density rates per 1,000 inhabitants greater than in the US or Russia. There are almost 100,000 specialists in the IT sector. Approximately 5,000 of the 30,000 engineers graduating every year in Romania are trained in ICT.
Microsoft acquired Romanian Antivirus Technology in 2003. According to Microsoft, Romania has a clear potential in information technology, an area in which Romanian students, researchers and entrepreneurs excel.

A few years back, during a spate of  mass thievery in UK through IT, it was noted that Romania and Bulgaria had the dubious distinction of being amongst the world's best at it.
