  1. We are bringing our 9 month old son out of the country tomorrow via Suvarnabhumi. This will be his first trip out of Thailand since being born here. He has a British passport, a British birth certificate, a Thai birth certificate, a translation of the latter into English. We will be returning in 3 weeks. Can anyone advise what will happen when we go through immigration and if we need to provide any other documentation. Many thanks and of course a Very Happy and Prosperous New Year to You All.

  2. My dear friends we are headed south to Trang from Ratchaburi next week for a little holiday on Koh Libong. I am planning to drive straight down the 41 to Phatalung and turning right along the 4. Probably more kms on the ground but quicker methinks. Any of you southern people able to advise or put me right?

    many thanks

  3. Hi can anyone advise if there is a catholic church in Trang as we are headed down that way over Easter. Would be grateful if you could say where it is and even better if you have any idea of the time of services. Many thanks

  4. I am reminded of the guy who went to see his doctor in an attempt to get some sympathy and some medication and walked away with a prescription with a phone number on it. The doctor simply said :"Phone these people". It was the number for AA and the rest I understand is history barring some initial reticence about being an alcoholic. You are stuck between the extremes of doing nothing and doing something and some of the potential consequnces and merits of both approaches are set out. Why don't you take him to an AA meeting, don't ask permission, don't tell him, just tell him : "We're going out and all I ask is that you come with me"; take him to the meeting and tell him the choice is now his and tell him to give AA an hour of his life........just a suggestion. Good luck

  5. I think the thing is your son is entitled to Brit citizenship as a right so long as he claims it prior to his 18th birthday. It is not a question of your wife agreeing/consenting. However the process would be to register his birth at the embassy and get a British birth certificate. To do this you need to produce your son's Thai birth certificate with an official translation; this does not need to be legalised just stamped by an official translator; thereafter you need to produce paperwork, passport and your own birth certificate; and you need to produce the boy's mother's passport to simply identify her as the same person who is named on the birth certificate. You can apply for a passport at the same time but once you have birth certificate you can apply for a passport on the strength of the birth certificate. I know this cos I recently did it for my own son.

  6. Thanks as always for your help with this. The passport is not too badly damaged, just a few smudgy stamps, and my current visa extension virtually invisible. I guess I should do the right thing and replace it as I don't want any grief going through customs especially as I travelling to the Philippines in April. Will I be able to get replacement visas etc and any idea of the cost? Many thanks again

  7. My British passport unexpectedly ended up in the washing machine and in fairness came out of it much better than I might have expected. I am on a Non-Imm B extended for one year. The visa is clearly visible but the extension is very faint; due to expire on 15.04.10 and to be renewed. I have photocopies of the originals. Other than the fact that my passport looks tatty am I likely to encounter any issues using it or getting my extension renewed. Any advice would be welcome. Many thanks

  8. Look here.

Look at 2.20 in the criteria for extensions section towards the top.

And 2.20 in the documents section towards the bottom.

Thanks Lite Beer, that's really helpful. my reading is if we have the documentation, and we have it and in Thai cos we got married here, then I can get an extension as a spouse without having to demonstrate means. Maybe the reality might be little different, maybe they will want to know about means. But thanks very helpful and would save a visa run.

  9. Yup Lopburi I am on 90 day visa extended for one year. Good to know that ends on the day the employment ends, and that I can extend it for seven days. Not sure yet but just exploring options and keen to keep on right side of immigration. Will the Thai authorities raise any questions on changing to a tourist visa after being in on a Non-Imm O for about 6 months and then a Non Imm B for a year? Many thanks if you know or have a view.

  10. I am thinking of quitting my teaching job in March without a new job lined up but would like to stay on in Thailand as wife and kid here, both aliens;wife also a teacher but staying in job. If I do not renew current contract I would be looking for a new job. Current contract expires 31st March. As I understand it my current visa, Non-Imm B, will expire 7 days after contract expires. Can I head to Vientiane or KL and get a 60 day tourist visa? Return, find a job and then leave again and get a new Non-Imm B? Any advice gratefully received.

Non Imm B not O oops

  11. Cowboy happy new year to you. I'd suggest a 90 day target with lots of AA meetings. as many as you can do. treat it like life and death, it is in the long term and the long term could be tomorrow, who knows? avoid wet places, don't go to bars or on crawls, find an excuse for not going to the rugby. the general trend for people like us is that it gets worse when we drink again, it doesn't get better. good luck.
