  1. Thx...but how would I go about this to provide for me living in Thailand in retirement indefinitely? Is it possible?

A criminal records check, medical check and bank balance is only required for the O-A long stay (retirement) visa issued in your home country, in this case the US. You can go to Thailand using a 90 day non immingant "O" visa and complete the recessory paperwork there. There is no requirement for a criminal records or medical ckeck up. There is a 800,000 BHT bank balance requirement though. Thailand Immigration would provide up with a a one year retirement extension of stay.

  2. just updated with the new 2013 map, working perfectly and was very, very easy to do!

Well not for me, I got the usb cable now and are connected to my pc.

I downloaded one of the IMG files to my pc (can't find any img files on my nuvi205w?)

The downloaded files are rar files and have to be extracted?

    Hope somebody can help, thanks.

    1. You should have downloaded an English language City Navigator Thailand NT 2013.20 (unlocked) file.

    2. Connect everything together - the Garmin, Computer and USB cable - and then locate the Garmin moveable hard drive on your computer display. Open the Garmin drive and search for "gmapprom or gmapprom.img", it will be the largest file there.

    3. Extract the downloaded City Navigator Thailand NT 2013.20 file to either your Download or Desktop area.

    4. Upload the old file from your Garmin to someplace safe on your computer.

    5. Download the new map file from your Download or Desktop area and replace the old map from your Garmin. Make sure the new map is called exactly the same as the old map.

    6. There is another way to replace the maps, but either method will work.

  3. Can anybody help me please?

Today I bought the Garmin Nuvi 40.

When I search in English it doesn't find anything, where can I download the StreetMaps so I can find places in English?

Insert a 1GB microSD memory card into the side of your Garmin and go to the internet and download the Garmin English language map, City Navigator Thailand NT 2013.20 (unlocked). There are many sites, incluiding You Tube, be sure to include a new folder named Garmin on the microSD card..

  4. The OP is requesting what 'GPS' unit to purchase in Thailand. Unless the OP is requesting which iPhone, Smartphone or other electronic device to purchase then he is requesting the correct info. If the OP is looking for another 'telephone' based device then he needs to rephrase his question.

  5. Went through the rigmarole of registering again to Garmin.com and after all that it told me there was no update.

Went back to GPSsociety.com where it told me there was an update and I should log in to garmin.com.tw (Taiwan) to download it. (Why Taiwan? Why yet another website?)

Went to garmin.com.tw, logged in and it told me there was an update to City Navigator Thailand NT MAP 2013.10

Downloaded the update file, ran it, and that put the whole map into Thai with apparently no option of changing it to English. So I deleted the new image and copied the old one back.

How can a software company's websites be so totally disorganised?

Sadly I have to agree it is a shambles. I bought a Nuvi that has 2011 data with a "Lifetime Map Update". I keep reading that there have been Thailand map updates but when I log in to their site and use my serial number it says no update is available. I am very disappointed with Garmin.

I'm afraid that the ESRI sourced Garmin nuvis, with the Thai OS, are still not supported by Garmin USA from their website. All three of my Thailand nuvis returned "no update is available". Nothing new here!!!!

  6. If you are going to use the Garmin in Thailand, at least most of the time, then the maps available for use are only available from Thailand dealers. Also I'd be aware of the special features like Junction View that are not available from US/European sourced units and are only available in Thailand (Thai OS).

  7. I bought the Nuvi 40 with the Thai maps but, though I can use a QWERTy keyboard, the maps are all in Thai and, I can't enter destinations in English. I looked through all the settings and did nto see a way to change the maps to English. do I have to download or buy something else?

There was a Thai map and an english map on the disc when i bought mine. it isn't in the settings, it is when you load the map onto the device. if you don't have that english map, you will have to get it somehow.
mine did not come with a disk unfortunately.
The Garmin nuvi 40 is only supplied with a Thai language map installed. You used to be able to get an English language map and Thai language map supplied, with instructions, on a CD included in the box. Now days the English language map has disappeared altogether, along with the CD, and you are instructed to contact www.garmin.co.th (My Garmin) for directions etc. You could contact ESRI company directly, in Bangkok, for service and support.
