  1. If I had children, I wouldn't even let them talk to someone who holiday's in Pattaya, far less go there!

Appears, you don't have any kids.

And you are going only half way. A bit of recursion:

A full blown statement could be: all social rejects that end up in Thailand (Pattaya is a place in it) would never see my children (that I don't have). That I am there does not mean others could think I am trash in the way I think of those holidaying in Pattaya.

  2. Last Thursday (July 5th), 2am BKK time, I was on a conference call and noticed a pop up that my wife (in Thai on holidays) has signed up and signed out.

Asked her in the morning, she said "no way, had not touched any computer since leaving Japan".

Now, it explains it. Seems like someone is using some automatic tool to check if they can sign in with the stolen passwords. What do they do with that?

Billions and billions of email messages, who would sift through that to find something they can use?

Perhaps, using that email address to gather email addresses in the accounts box they can spam to?

No change in the account, I went into it. Nothing sent from there, nothing received.

They used a SQL injection to dump the database.. it just so happened to have all the passwords in plaintext. They are not just yahoo email addresses but specific to the yahoo voice service.

Well, yet another blow for the troubled Yahoo (as a company). That could be the most they (the hackers) could cause out of that, could even be terminal for Yahoo.

Yahoo has a storage server for every 50 thousand users. Not sure how widespread this incident could be. Certainly, exposes the whole Yahoo security measures.

  4. Aeron, same as the one I had in the office in Sydney.

It came whole in the box, nothing to assemble:

My old place (and old server back in 2003, Tokyo) and the chair is unbreakable. Serves today as on the day 1. in October 2003:

It was 150,000Yen...about 60,000 THB today.

  5. The Euro fitness was good not been for long time 60 a visit 50 metre pool by the sat auction place

    I think that pool is 25 m.

Here's an older post with some useful information:

    http://www.thaivisa.com/forum/topic/206124-any-olympic-sized-swimming-pools-for-swimming-laps-in-pattaya/

Post #13 in the link is mine, 4 years ago. Then my knowledge was fresher, I thought the pool was 50x25m, olympic size.

Last time I have bbeen there was in August 2010. but came from the sea side and did not see the pool.

  6. So (for all its pitfalls as discussed in this thread) nobody has identified a better place (other than Hua Hun which sounds like it doesn't have much if anything for kids) in Thailand for a family holiday than Pattaya. As I said earlier, I think Pattaya is far from perfect, and would like to know some alternatives (especially from those who would never take kids to Pattaya).

Would anybody like to make some suggestions where in Thailand I can take my kids for a weekend away from Bangkok (other than Pattaya)?

If you think taking kids to Pattaya is sitting them up in beer bars along the Beach Road,I would not do that either.

Discarding Pattaya for kids is akin to saying one would never take kids to New York because there are Harlem and Bronx.

What it has for families is just great and as kids grow they understand the places differently, no drama to revisit the attractions. For example, the open zoo, each year my kid would have a new and more curious way to appreciate the animals, feed them, touch, things she had been scared to do a year earlier.

Weekend out but not Pattaya, comparable to Pattaya's water park but bigger, try Siam Park at Minburi. From Ekkamai/Phrakhanong it was taking us an hour to get there. No high rises, feels like 100s km away from the city. The waterpark closes 6pm but the fun park remains until...10?

You can be back to sleep in your own home. Google it, the water park is only half of it, has all the fun rides and theme park like points of interest.

  7. Do not think any mongers will be hanging out here and this is in Pattaya:

    Look here:

    http://www.centaraho...mbr_default.asp

Then click on Grande Mirage Beach Resort.

    Whoooh! Superb!

I think place like that deserves my sunday's best singlet and tongs !laugh.pnglaugh.pnglaugh.png

But really, far cheaper place, like Grand Jomtien Palace (only name is "grand", packed with Russians and 1 night package tours) and it's little known cottages in the back for 1,200B can give you a lots of joy. Large room, could be 56sqm, pool only for the cottages...lovely.

  8. 2 huge water parks currently under construction in the Pattaya area, this one http://www.thaivisa....s-construction/ and the Cartoon Network one on Sukhumvit near Bang Saray.

The article says "April 2013" opening. Right for Songkran, when needed the most.

Good news for me. This year Hua Hin and their water park, next year brand new Pattaya water park.

Usually, we would stay at View Thalai IV. A friend bought 2 rooms there, joined them, furnished them well and is happy to rent us at a nominal charge.

There you see Pattaya residents and their tows. As there is no interraction other than sharing lifts, that is not disturbing and is nothing like Beach Road where we have no need to go at all.

  9. ThaiVisa uses InVision, not vBulletin. Just because vBulletin has this setting doesn't mean that InVision will also have it. George can probably confirm though.

I poked around, looks like InVision may not have it.

There are 2 times for editing:

    - first, time to make editing possible, which is set to something and that was what George referred to - 15 or 30 minutes. Without it editing would be impossible.

    - second, time as grace period before "Edited by" note is inserted. That tunable parameter might be non-existent in the software.

  10. The request is for another time limit to be in place before the "edited by..." text is inserted into the post. I.e. so that if you make a very quick edit immediately after posting no-one will see that the post has been edited. This is possible in vBulletin, not sure about InVision (the software used by TV) though.

That's a trivial thing, all bulletin board software have it. In my VBulletin site it is:

  11. Can't remember where but wasn't some land put aside for a Disney park that never happened then Warner perhaps and finally now sold to Cartoon Network? Hope they do something about the traffic. Train from the airport ala Hong Kong ?

The rumor had it, it was Hua Hin for Disney.

And only rumor it was. Put a price of tickets at 2,000B and how many Thais would come? See what is happening with Hua Hin water park: they halved entry fee from 900B to 450B and hardly anyone there. Pattaya Water Park was 150B when I went there last time.

Siam Water Park in Bangkok (Minburi) was 250 a pop but yearly pass was paltry 480B.

No way Disney in Thai can have enough public at prices they need to break even.

  12. The most recent research data I've seen noted that foreign buyers in the Bangkok condo market accounted for around 3% of all transactions. Just three years ago it was 8%. All reports that I am getting indicate that more foreigners are buying in Thailand - not only Bangkok but also specifically Pattaya and Phuket. Yes - we're a long way from where we were a few years ago but the tide is changing.

When I said that current market is 30% of what it was in 2008. it was a good guess, for an amaterur.

    Your data almost confirms that.

  13. Agree with you somewhat W11guy

But also wonder about the metapicture, that information technology is removing the need for geographic location for a proportion of people who would before have had no alternative to that W11 flat or house. This trend will increase just as online shopping has increased.

Would also say it's a real pain renting out property that's not just down the road.

That trend has actually contributed the high prices in the central areas. Who could get money from "working from home, from anywhere", went about most desirable locations the "old economy" has always liked.

  14. I thunk it would be sensible given the new methods we are all now using to communicate on the forum.

True edits reflect a change of view....which reflects upon posts.

We are not talking "true edits". Just minor spelling corrections.

Someone may say "use spell checker provided by the site". I can not, it is blocked. Even from home (McAfee virus checker).

The reason I have not posted here for 2 years was that most of the content was blocked by the Corp. It took 3-4 blank screenfulls to get to anything. Now it is better but still many "X"s instead whatever TV wants to say or advertise.

TV admins should be aware of that.

  15. .

    Following on from the OP.

Able to make changes if no-one has replied ... up to say the 15 mins mentioned above.

Sadly, I believe that we will get the appreciative nod from the Admin guys here who will say ... good idea in concept, however difficult to achieve in practise and would require a software rewrite which is something that is both costly and outsourced.

    .

It is configurable, about 1 minute job for admins.

  16. Admins,

Many of us type from laptops or tablets or devices other than regular desktop PC.

Spelling errors are innevitable. Coming back to correct them leaves a mark "Edited by.." right away.

Appears that someone had edited the post to omit something important while it was "teh" instead of "the".

Could that be changed to allow say, 15 mins before "Edited by" kicks in? Was it not like that before?

Also, be aware we are not 20-ish old boys and girls, bad sight, fat fingers, etc.

  17. I previously had an Otto but it was much larger than your average toaster oven - around 2600 Baht. I could bake cakes, pork roasts, pies, etc. It worked very well and used it for several years before one element burned out. Went looking for the exact same model but could only find the small toaster ovens. Finally located a place with several choices and picked up the one below. Larger than the Otto with a rotisserie motor, blower fans, upper and lower heating elements and quite large cooking area. The brand is Zanussi and is an Electrolux branch - cost a little over 3000 Baht but very happy with it.

That's a way bigger and more functional than what I have. Ovens are not common in Japan, hardly any JP food is prepared that way. Thai food could be the same.

Mine little toaster oven was 300B in Thai, about the same as in Japan. Good chance it was made in Thai.

  18. Its a lovely Hotel. My brother stayed there for 10 days. It would normally be about 6-7000 bt per night. I would stay there if I was you. He said their BBQ on the beach was fantastic..

It's Dusit Thani for a week. With a car (through ThaiVisa rental. 30% cheaper than the nearest offer, same car from the same renowned company) it won't be a problem to go to the city and to the waterpark.

  19. If you mean this kind of oven, it's more like a toaster with a hatch.

    rerna01.jpg

I have it in Japan, in Thai too. Indispensable. Use it at least once a day. They are more for things that need up to 15 mins of cooking. Say, a salmon fillet or a steak.

Toast, garlic bread, ad-hoc pizza bread. Even egs can be fried in there with not a drop of oil.

  20. I don't know much about real estate here but my feeling on it is the tax.

Even condos that I have rented; there's something about the lease with the furniture etc. that they do to understate the value. I've been told thats why people won't lower the price if you don't want furniture or rent unfirnished units.

I think if the owners were paying full tax on their units, they wouldn't be empty.

It's actually more canine that that. The first place we rented was a "mansion", which had furniture, crew, could be rented (rarely done) short term, jacked up elec, phone and water bills.

It also had furniture that was built in, impossible to remove. On the bill it was separately stated what it was (say, 3,000B out of 8,000B rent). Quite substantial for furniture (no fridge, no tv, simple table and 1 chair) that would normally be barely enough to say the room was "partly furnished". So, there is a trick how they depreciate the fittings at a faster pace and returns than the walls.

Next one, at Sukhumvit+, was really fully furnished but we never saw the bill, just kept on paying into the owners account. And water, elec and phone were at government rates, in our name.
