  1. big bike with a good sidecar is the answer also for smaller families. Not for the big cities. 3 wheels are much much saver provided the sidecar wheel has a break!!

Got a 600cc bike from here plus a sidecar imported from England (left attached !)

Living here since 5 years. Love the air and the diesel, cant imagine to drive a car , would feel imprisoned.

    What's wrong with a saaleng? :o

    Loosecannon, are you sure you got the spelling right as it looks to me riding in that could be a case of SO LONG {life}

  2. Thaksin has stated along with his supporters that he would bring down this current government by song kran, everyone has been, I'm sure, that he meant by force/public unrest, maybe he has after all another agenda to achieve this end, although I am a bit surprised all the ex pat experts here on the post haven't thought about that possibility.

Anyone remember the antics of one,George Soros and the stock markets in London and then the results of him moving into the Malaysian money markets in the 90s.

  3. Yeah, I am really paranoid of going with a Thai insurer. People say its fine, but at the end of the day, TIT. Living in Thailand now, I am getting the feeling that its not possible to book through an American insurer without going back to the states. I have filled out those online help forms but with an email only and have not received any response.

Tony, surely if you were insured from your birth country and then lived abroad wouldn't your insurer deem that you actually needed travel insurance?, after all your premium relates to where you live at the time the policy was purchased, there was a post on tv this week quoting a figure of 32,377 killed over last years 7 day song kran festival and I would have thought figures like that would up your premiums quite a bit.

Thai/p, haven't seen a sidecar around for years in the uk, but popular enough in the 60s though, still would scare me to death riding one on these roads with all the idiots around.

  5. when i see a motorcycle with 3 or 4 people on it... 3 of them children or even a baby, off course nobody with helmet, kinda breaks my heart...

are they stupid, ignorant or just to poor ???

taking the bus is safer in bkk ?

Thaibkk, Wife had this experience with a woman on a m/c whith 3kids on the bike, one, about 3yrs old hanging on the handle bars and two on the back came flying across the cross rds on a 3lane bypass, my wife swerved one way to miss her and the truck behind swerved the opposite way to my wife and hit the m/c at about 100kph result, mum dead along with one kid and the other two seriously injured, what a tragic and unnecessary couple of deaths and injury.

My wifes mother killed two days before she was to come and live with us by a hit and run driver.

  6. Back on topic, I understand that it took a while for this project to get started, but once it was explained to the siblings just what a book was, they began to make some progress.

I'm sure it came as a huge relief to them that they wouldn't actually have to write a book, either.... but just merely be interviewed verbally by the 2 authors.

S/J is'nt that called ghost writing.?.

  7. Remote control gate are great, but a real DOWNER if the power is out and it is pouring down rain, with a thunder storm over head :o:D best set in car and wait the storm out. A good friend did just that and man was he glad he did, a BOLT of Lightening hit about 3 meters from he would have been standing, to close for comfort :D

Bigsnake. when we got dogs my wife used to let them run all over the garden, whats the point of having an eletric remote gate if you have to get out in the rain to put the dogs on a leash, but she is after all a thai, they are now in the back but I have installed a 4kw petrol generator which is started by whoever happens to be available{theres always someone in the house at all times} problem solved.

  8. S.J,stated that the daughter was fully aware and actually complicit with her fathers crimes, must have missed that on the news, how come she has not been charged or has she bought immunity with all her money, which I doubt, lets keep it factual.

For a brief review of Thaksin's offspring's exploits, of both the indicted and unindicted (yet highly suspicious) variety, try:

Sorry S/J still didn't see where she's been charged with anything, and as for the tax payment do you actually think she sits down with a cup of tea to do her tax returns, I don't think so, from the very start of his stint as P.M. I have been banging on about how corrupt Toxin was/is and no one including a lot of out of the closet detractors now following the baying mob of expats wanting to add their penny's worth.

Yes he has ripped off the country, it's really no different from all the other bloody politicians who have positions of power, it's that he was so much better at it than the rest and yes so has every bugger who has been in the P.Ms post since I've lived here. ask yourself, WHY he was only sentenced to 2yrs and not charged with conspiracy to commit murder or maybe he has and I missed that too. And of course we come to the present mob, one new P.M. and the country still being run by a so called deputy, ever thought that Mark may have been given that position to be used as cannon fodder if and when the shit hits the fan. Oh and by the way my kids have a considerable amount of money in the bank and know it, but they don't really understand what Ive had to do to ensure that, don't we all try to make provision for our families?, crooked or otherwise.

  9. I simply listed social recognition as one of the many advantages to owning an automobile.

I'm sorry to be so pedantic but what are the advantages of social recognition.

Write down the ISBN of this book and you can pick it up at Kinokuniya Book Store

Its very basic, very well written, and not filled with scientific jargon.

Do they do it in a thai version Tony as I sure my thai friends would like to read it so they know what it means too, but heh they say your never too old to learn and as I have time on my hands I will buy it, thank you.

  10. Perhaps I can better make my point. Suppose you were to interview a very fit 18 year old University girl sitting at a bus stop.

On a scale of 1-10 how much does a BMW impress you?

    10/10

What about that Fortuner SUV that just drove by?

    8/10

How about the motorcycle that Mr. David, your English teacher drives?

Not really. I think the cell phone I want costs more. Maybe 3/10

Let me get this right tony/s, are you really concerned what people think of you? and do you think one should feel someone with a more expensive car is therefore more important than some other person with an old truck, obviously I know thais think like that but westerners???????????.

  11. what I find quite amazing is the fact that a lot of farangs I know take all the precautions imaginable about protecting material wealth then ride a motorcycle with no blooming helmet on. in fact do posters really think that the average thai thief really wants to be confronted by some pi---d off falang, not all theives are that brave or stupid and like most will attempt a break-in when people are out. {I hope}.

  12. whats the thai equivalent of the deep intake of breath and shaking of the head so beloved of builders when inspecting a problem and preparing a quote.

My wifes going to be so pleased with the extra money after I've screwed this falang.

    • Haha 1
  13. Some good info here, but no need for spitting the dummie and flaming.

The idea here, is to help one another. :o

    thanks

    gd :D

Couldn't agree more G/D. you really don't have to worry about good neighbours helping out as there are so many flaming arrows flying around your sure to nail one of the buggers, so lets all lighten up a bit.

Replies given in this thread could be a matter of life or death for someone reading this and later to be face to face with a burglar in his sleeping room!!

That should be considered really very, very careful by everyone.

Do you honestly think for one minute that anyone and that includes so called newbies have never seen the majority of newish houses that aren't barricaded like Alcatraz and to think if thats the case they have not given security some serious thought with regards to a property they are buying/building. I have lights and dogs plus a few other unseen defences and I refuse to live in a bloody prison with bars everywhere, and anyway what are the chances of getting your house broken into, is the figure higher here or in London?.

  14. It all depends. Some people would look at a Civic (even the top one) as "I didn't want to spend extra for an Accord..." And plenty would look at a Fortuner as "It's a Hilux Vigo hatchback." I'd say the even among the middle class, if they aren't familiar with a particular brand/make, they won't even know how to tell the difference between the top/mid/base model of a particular car anyway.

Not that it matters what other people think.

Paying cash is the way to go of course... don't forget the Thai proverb as well though... "Lao si lek, jek si din." (Lao folks buy steel, Chinamen buy dirt.) In other words, these steel toys called cars... that will almost inevitably depreciate to ZERO... should be a minute portion of your total net worth.

    :o

I personally really don't care. But I can a sure you, for the Thai middle class the 2.0 on the back of a Civic is something like a symbol of the mighty.

And a cash paid top Civic is superior to a Accord or Camry bought by credit for them.

Only the class beyond that and the class beyond that would be more recognised in a feudal way of looking at things even if credited.

But all that does really not matter.

And I was naive enough to think that a car was for getting from A to B, never thought that I had a need to impress my neighbours, guess I must be in the minority there. 2yrs ago we bought a Toyota {oh dear} new and cash, prior to that and for more than 10yrs we've had a new Mercedes every two years usually an S320 but not once have I ever got out of a car and thought " My god that was like some great orgasmic experience} having one in the car was a different matter Lol.

  15. A security Guard with a Whistle :D:D:o:D might be in order. Don't think an Arm Security Guard Lurking around would be a good idea. :D:wai:

Bigsnake, that idea won't work, said burglar would think the guy with the whistle was backing him into the victims driveway, although I've never understood what it means and just do my own thing.

  17. Having read through 4pages of answers to the snake problem and people advocating getting a little book on snakes and how to recognise them there still seems to be some posters who still cant put a name to some of the snakes shown here so how the hel_l can a complete novice expect to know.

When we lived in bkk a few years ago I remember there was a thai house in the city infested with cobras, experts, or so we were led to believe were called in and the old bill killed every one.

Twice whilst working and walking in my garden I have been bitten, the snake having pi---d off into the undergrowth, on both occasions I just felt a bit sick and some swelling but otherwise no ill effects, I could walk around my garden and virtually guaratee to see a snake if I probed under the bushes, if I see one then I leave it well alone but in my house it may well be another matter but so far that situation has not arisen in the 3yrs we've lived here.

  18. Many good suggestions here regarding prevention and the actual detection systems.

A sign informing anyone entering that they will be caught on video can be usefull.

Make sure to add that the video cam is hooked up to an UPS, so the burglars know cutting the power will not do it.

Travel why bother to give that info , they probably would not know what it means anyway, lets just catch the scumbags.

If they actually read the sign and leave your house alone they will only go somewhere else, I say catch them and take them out of the equation hopefully for some time.

Maybe you are a Ninja, but for the average expat, that would be too much to asked for.

The only way I could catch a burglar would be directing him somehow ("the safe is in that corner") to a trapdoor of an underground hole, if there would be one.

Actually I never advocated tackling a burglar just that if he/they were caught on camera then it could at least be given to the police, I now realise having that thought in my mind that I was having an alzheimer's moment or at the very least a touch of senile dementia.

  19. Nah , staying in Sg atm.

Non filtered ponds are perfectly ok if you keep stocking density logical .

I use non filtered non aerated mud based or green water ponds for grooming quite extensively.

I think we should start a aquarist thread some where before we get kicked out :o:D:D

Your probably right as most of the post I have seen are about tilapi or other commercial stuff not much about koi.

  20. I'm still learning how to keep bacteria 555

Still in the planning stage before I venture into koi ,never had the luxury for property large enough to have a koi pond.Closest was with tosakins and ranchus. :D

But I'm messing with some arowanas now. :o

Ifactory, do you live in the kingdom? and how big is your garden, doesn't have to be a large size, there have been posters around that insist you dont need a filtration system for their dozen or so 12inch koi and they are right when you have a 3rai pond for them and never really expect to see them, but for hobbyists a smallish pond with a good filter will enable one to keep more than enough fish.

  21. yeah depending on the ammonia cycle status of the pond high phosphate could be a reason as well , without additional feed back of the thread starter would be difficult to direct him towards a solution isnt it? :o

Interested to find out how the filter is being designed and set up myself ,

You a koi junkie yourself? :D:D

Ifactory, your right but without knowing what his filtration system is and the medium he's using it would be hard to quantify but another source of nitrates of course is plain old tap water which in England can be as high as 50mgl also run-off from garden soil, heavy rain, and yes for my sins I guess you could call me a koi junkie, and you????
