  1. for dinner, the price was ok for me but I agree.... $10us dollars (300b) is expensive. In the west, a chinese lunch menu is usually about 200b and probably with soda for that price (plus tip). It seems to owned or managed by some young/middle aged guy(s) that are british or irish. I'd say as a business owner, I'd like to hear what people have to say and I will take it or leave it myself. better to hear stupid ideas and good ideas than none at all.

Again, nice place, I will go back for another dinner sometime. More of a set menu option would be nice. I think if they figured something out with set's or pricing or whatever and added some neon to the outside, they'd definately get even more customers. I doubt they are hurting based on what I saw.

  2. BTW, not sure they close Mondays. I passed by Monday night and saw some people eating in there. 300 bahtish for a plate, rice, and soft drinkee, sounds steep. How was the portion on the sweet and sour dish? It actually is common to serve poor rice and I also appreciate when it is done well.

Well they were open today, Tuesday, at 10pm. The S&S was I think 180 or 190 and it seems the rice (small bowl sized) was extra and then the can of coke. All that for 290. I have never found Chinese food to be cheap. in the west that would have been more like 500b but the coke would have been endless.

I am no skinny dude and the rice and the dish were portioned well for Thailand and I was full. I would say an average portion or better (for one person). It was served in that standard regtangular dish plate you see at most restaurants like Kiss cool etc.

it is common to serve white rice, I just prefer chow mein. I am also used to a fortune cookie at the end but I didn't get one. :( (sad face) Sad because I like reading the fortunes and putting the obligatory "...in bed" after the fortune.

  3. Had mine about 3 months or so... 1400km. seems to get 85-90+mpg based on an average of fuel ups (counting the liters going in but still relying on the odometer). I did ride next to my friends click and they seemed to be exactly the same for kmph so if mine is off, so are some clicks.

I rode against an elegance with a guy about 50lb lighter than me. It's all in who starts off first. but in general the elegance was ever so slightly faster. A pcx 125 seems closer. I prefer mpg to quarter mile times personally. Spoked bikes seem faster than my mag rim bike.

I had them adjust the rear brake and put air in the tires after 3 months. If I would have really known how to adjust the brake I would have done it myself. super easy.

the throttle originally pissed me off cause it was so touch at the little bit of gas, no gas. I don't know if it broken in or I am now just used to it but it doesn't bother me anymore.

I do think it would be nice if there was 158cc kit for this as there is for the elegance but then I think/.... why?

very happy with the bike. The only complaint would be power but my friends new elegance doesn't really seem faster (a bit more torque feeling though).

No er-1 issues etc. I did have teh Avg fuel consumption stay blank for the last half tank of gas in this last run, was going to the dealer, filled it up. and magically it works. Will keep an eye on it.

  4. Just ate there. Easy to find. It is exactly accross the street from Mata Hari and a few dozen meters past Cowboy going towards Pattaya.

    Size: Small, nice

Decor: good (better than most inexpensive places in the west), Excellent for Pattaya. Probably could use some things to break down some of the noise from other people but thats if I have to be really picky and this is standard for Thailand. Music was going at a low volume to help out. Well decorated, very very nice.

Cleanliness: this place seemed new and clean.

Food: I ate Sweet and Sour chicken with rice. I wanted chow mein but that would have been a whole chow mein dish and another 180ish baht. The rice was perfect (hot, slighly moist), not sure how you can screw up rice but some places do and this place it was was excellent. The sweet and sour chicken.... I am used to a more crispyish breading on the chicken but this was excellent all the same. The veggies were cooked yet fairly crisp and the sauce had a lot of flavor. This is very similar to western style I have had before.

I don't have any complaints. The bill was 290b with a coke, sweet and sour chicken and rice.

I will be going again when I have a hankering for chinese (or western style). I didn't use door2 door because a) they want 50b for the 1km drive I would have to take and B) I was unsure of the portions etc. and wanted to try them out first.

  5. I have flown EVA for international flights for the last 5 years (9.5 round trips?). I have flown coach, middle class (elite/deluxe) and their 1st class (super laurel or something like that). First,... first class was awesome. I used miles as I am not rich. I normally fly elite and although 50% more, flying 7500+ miles 1 way, is easier with the nicer middle class comforts.

EVA has never left on time on any one of my flights although it is usually on-time for arrival. The food.... hmmmm. well it is crappy, but.... it is the best "airline food" I have had. I actually now bring a pb&j and a tuna fish sandwich via a small cool vinyl lunchbox. I bring some other snacks like a small orange and fruit rollups. I do get the food and usually pass on the entre'.

the planes are newish, clean, and the staff is excellent especially if you speak mandarin.

EVA has always been the cheapest and fastest (end to end) flight for me to Thailand.

  6. I have been caught in 3 in Bangkok (2 going to the airport... why can't they just helicopter to the airport?), 1 at the airport in udon thani in which they closed the main highway for over an hour in waiting for the VIP. and 3 times in Pattaya in the same street light. The issue it seems is that it seems that due to inefficiency they tend to block significant amounts if not the whole route before commencing. I literally sat at the light in pattay for 20 minutes and the cops had already stopped the traffic when I got there.

Funny enough a young middle eastern foreigner on a scooter, after waiting 5 or so minutes with no motorcade in site (for another 15), decided he wanted to inch forward and I think wanted to uturn to take another route. the cop nearest him grabbed the bike from the front, and turned off his bike. then 15 minutes later, 3 normal looking midsized cars went through with 5 or 6 cop cars and a couple vans.

I think it could be a lot more efficient especially if the cops used more high powered street bikes and did the motorcades similar to how it is done in the US.

  7. I used to get upset when taxi drivers would say no they would not go there and I'd leave the passenger door wide open. ;) I found out that most taxi drivers have to pay 700+ baht per day for the car plus fuel.and sometimes on long distances (I lived out in the suburbs) they wouldn't be able to get a fair back to close to home or the car dropoff point. I have gone through 2 or 3 cabs before, usually speaking in thai and smiling, and opening the door and asking before I get in gets good response. A bigger problem I see is the raping of tourists money by false meters (never happened to me or at least of any greedy amount) and METER NOT WORK HOW MUCH YOU PAY?

Look if you are not willing to take me on a 150 baht ride for 150 baht and instead start off at 500 baht... you should be jailed, hack license revoked for a year and given a fine. That IMHO is fraud or theft. If you were at a hotel and someone stole 350 baht from your room right in front of you, what sanctions would they get.

Anyway at minimm they should just do this for meter broken....

If you say your meter is broken. The police should impound the vehicle and fine the driver for operation of a taxi without proper equipment. The vehicle should stay impounded until police can fully review the vehicle for safety, polution, taxi shields and equipment, title work legal, etc. Figure 5 days without a taxi (at best) would cost the driver plenty and after about 2 or 3 of these crackdowns.... word would get out.

  8. In Pattaya the SX....

    MITYON pricing

54,800 for the spoke wheel version

56,800 for the mag wheel version

    600 for insurance

400 some government tax or license or something

    300 red plate

    2500 2 year theft insurance (80% value 1st year, 60% value 2nd year)

==60,600 all up for the mag wheel version

Non-Mityon dealers like Watchara Marine are about the same price (61k) and should come with 2 crappy helmets and a jacket and a mesh seat cover. Or at least that's the deal at Marine. Allegedly you can go way out of town but still in Chonburi and get slighly better price.

See http://www.thaivisa.com/forum/topic/576216-2012-yamaha-nouvo-sx-anyone-own-one/ for a quick review of SX vs Click 110 vs Click 125 vs PCX 150.

  9. Here i will do more leg work for you. I just can not read for you too. A simple search will provide you with about 300 opinions...

    http://www.thaivisa....vo#entry5349331

Thanks for the link. I did search TV for "Nouvo SX" and came up with quite a bit of reading of very little value... The threads went off topic quickly (tires, fueling planes, PCX fanboys, speculation (was going to be 135cc), scoopies are ugly, tubless tires are awesome, etc. etc) and that is why I started this thread for people who actually own one etc.

Funny about that link, it was actually looking at getting an Elegance and the link to the thread you sent (different pages) was I think the one that let me know where was something new (the SX).

I know I rarely post here so I look like a newb and that's fine. Again thanks for that link (altough a dupe for me).

I won't be buying one until late this week (or the week after) as I need to get a new Residency Cert. So I have time to think a bit and see what else pops on TV.

I thought I wanted the black and yellow but the silver/white purple (purple on the handlebars) is starting to grow on me.

  10. go rent one as it will be easier then answer all your ?ss

    +1

    +2!!!! hahahaah

Well if you only want two shocks then get the Nouvo as there is nothing else in that range that has two. (actually I'm not sure about Suzuki)

I've not heard any complaints though about the Click having only one shock. Most big sports bikes have only one.

I am on the click 110 and my friend has had the 110 and now has a 125. He has said it is basically the same bike with more power and a bit more room under the seat. Whats funny though, I have 1 friend with the 125, a few with the pcx but then most are on Yamaha's and most bikes I see parked in the places I go are yamahas (spark, nouvo, elegance).

Thanks for all the replies so far. I just wish someone who actually owns one would speak up. I have actually not seen one on the road. I am not too concerned about that because it is fairly new.

  11. go rent one as it will be easier then answer all your ?ss

I do appreciate the attention and the time you spend to try to help with your response but renting one will not answer my questions. Which were...

How long have you owned it?

    Where did you buy?

How much (all taxes, insurance, plate, theft)?

    How many miles now?

    Any issues with it?

    What color combo and rims?

    Any other comments?

Im not saying it's a better bike, but for all round value for money the new Click 125 is probably your best bet.

I've seen a few guys on here singing the praises of the new Click but I can't recall any for the new Nouvo sx, it does look nice though.

In regard to the click 125 I am aware that it exists. I haven't riden it. It does seem to have more space under the seat than the 110cc. However it has one shock, same as the 110 and I don't think 1 shock is for me.

Tell you were to go to get one. You could go out to Bo Win on 331. The bike shops out there are much better on prices.

Or alternatively you should stay on 331 till you get to Cambodia. Only US$1280 over there!

Thanks for the Bo Win comments. Since I won't be living in Cambo for the forseable future... that doesn't help.

  12. Looking for people who either own one or ridden one for at least a few weeks. Liked my MX 110 carb and the click 110 FI is smoother. So I am wondering if this is the best of both worlds.

I have already read the posts on "my friend has one", etc. Looking for actual owner comments. And especially where you bought it and the cost. Seems that in Pattaya it is 60.6k baht all up (with 2 year theft) Thinking Naklua or Sri Racha is cheaper.

    So....

How long have you owned it?

    Where did you buy?

How much (all taxes, insurance, plate, theft)?

    How many miles now?

    Any issues with it?

    What color combo and rims?

    Any other comments?

If we can keep this on topic and off of the Elegance or PCX that'd be cool, those are great bikes but off topic.

    Thanks.

  13. Look, wouldn't all American expats like to get out of paying taxes. If you are making the money you seem to be implying and by that, I mean 100's of thousands of dollars US per year*, then I think you should invest some of that into talking to actual legal counsel. You can prep for it now and put a plan together for the next few years. Yes you will need a password and citizenship from another country because you can't exit under the statute without proof of citizenship. So work on that first. That should take you a few years or at least 100k US.

*when I estimated that amount it was based on your 25-40% tax statement. I'll assume that was an educated statement and therefore you meant tax on AGI but not being able to take the 95k tax exclusion. To be in the middle of that tax range you mentioned (32.5%) you would have to make more than a half million dollars (not including any AMT issues) assuming nothing but the basic standard deduction (no kids, interest, all income being earned not capital gains, not even giving money to charity). The tax rate is GRADUATED. And if you lived as an expat, you could take the exlcusion for the first 95k. If you are making that much money, maybe invest a bit and those returns would be at the 15% rate (assuming you invested for the long term). That would again, reduce your tax burden.

The smarter move would be to see a tax consultant (CPA or tax lawyer) and an investment manager. The rich do this and by percentage pay a lower rate (although it is still millions in taxes).

BTW, you know you have to pay taxes in Thailand even if you are not a citizen right? And you know for the money you are probably talking about, you would pay more than in the US?

  14. wow, I would assume that LOS will take a Australian tourism hit for this especially in light of the girls last week in pii pii, and now a travel agent. I doubt aussie agents will be recommending LOS for this coming high season. It would be interesting to see if increasing penalties for crimes against tourist would reduce this sort of thing. like double the sentence.

  15. From Jomtien (Chayapruk and beach road) by private car it took a little less than an hour to get to the boats. then the speedboat was pretty quick. Waited 20 minutes for the boat. Then it took 15 minutes to get in the boat and wait for a few others. then maybe 10 or so minutes to the island.

  16. What is the interface speed of your NIC on your laptop? I'll assume 1gbps. So therefore yes.

If your firewall/router/cable bridge (aka and incorrectly called a modem) has an interface speed (incoming) of 1gbps which is generally rare then yes. if not, you MIGHT be able to get 80mbps actual througput and up-to 100mbps depending on many variables.

Most of the comments are correct in that.... will 100mbps be faster than 50? probably. Will you notice a difference? Probably not. Unless you are downloading a dozen BR tor files at a time or otherwsie moving massive amounts of data you probably won't notice and it probably doesn't matter anyway. My 16mbps with 1mbps up is really maybe 5-8mbst and 1/2 mbps to the western world like Europe and America where most of the Internet is located.

It would be funny to pay all that money and then get no better western world connection than a 16mbps.

Really it is about what you want to do. I like to get to the western world so my speed there is important. Since it is filtered as well as limited to the underwater fiber available, you'll never really get close to any of those speeds at least for the near future.

  17. The trend plug article is standard fair. A bit of FUD but not as much as is the norm in InfoSec. Most of the predictions can be used from year-to-year and are almost at the palm readin level. Having said that, it is good fud to shovel at your CIO so maybe you can get a new XXXXX or XXXXX security toy to play with and put on your CV.

As far as IPs being logged, yes but who is even looking at the logs before they get wiped for clearing space, and besides. You can alway use a XXXXX so a different IP than your real one will be logged.

  18. Pattaya and Jomtien are not fully booked, not even close. Yes there may be your favorite hotel doesn't have any rooms available and maybe in fact that actually means the rooms are fully occupied too (instead of being repaired or remodeled). However, there are hundreds of places with rooms from 400b (not so great) to 700b (not great but near walking street) to 3000b+ a night on the beach in Jomtien.

  19. If I may get clarification on a few things? First let me say, Windows XP SP2 and beyond as well as VISTA and Windows 7 have a built-in Firewall (turned on by default in Vista and 7) that block incoming FTP.

    PICK ONE:

    1. Do you want to FTP from a computer on the INTERNET to your Vista computer connected to your Zyxel Router?
    2. Do you want to FTP from your Vista computer to another computer where both are connected to the Zyxel Router?
    3. Do you want to FTP from your Vista computer to another computer on the INTERNET?

Note that #2 and #3 should automatically work with the default settings of Vista and your Zyxel router. AS LONG AS YOU ARE USING THE DEFAULT FTP CLIENT (in a dos window). 3rd party FTP clients may have an issue

Assuming it is #1 you have to do 2 things. Enable FTP through the Zyxel Router and Enable FTP in your VISTA firewall.

Enable FTP through the Zyxel Router Instructions:

    1. You will need to log onto your Zyxel router by opening up Internet Explorer and putting in the IP address of the router (aka Default Gateway).
    2. Once logged on, choose "Networking" from the menu on the left and then choose "NAT"
    3. On the NAT menu, choose "Port Forwarding" tab.
    4. Chose the "Service Name" dropdown and select "FTP"
    5. For the "Server IP Address", put in the IP address of your Vista machine
    6. Click the "Add" button.

Here is a youtube video on how to do port forwarding on a Zyxel router. NOTE this is to do a custom port and I would choose FTP from the dropdown and NOT do custom. But the video should give you a good idea. Note I have never used a Zyxel but watched the the first 2 minutes of this video to get the menu information.

Enable FTP through your VISTA firewall:

I will need more information if you are running an FTP server on your VISTA computer. Application name, version number etc. However, if you configure they Zyxel router for port forwarding AND you turn off the VISTA firewall, it should work. I suggest only shutting it off to test to make sure the FTP server application is working through the router, then turn on firewall and create exception rules in Vista firewall.

  20. There is a reason they make replacement pieces. I have the same headphones and used them in a relatively low humidity climate for 3+ years and the rubberised earpieces flaked. They add a ruber coating to fabric and I think that over time you will have this issue.

However, I didn't know they had a trade in, that would have been cool. I replaced my ear pieces from the Bose site and I used the headhones maybe 2 roundtrips a year (for about 60 hours of flight total) but I would have liked to upgrade. bummer, no reason to do it now that the ear pieces are replaced.

  21. Depending on the architecture of the site you may be able to split it between here and an international provider that has the equipment that can squelch hobbyist DDoS attacks. So if your site requires authentication, have the externally facing site in the US or elsewhere with a company that has Tipping Points or one of many other brands of devices that can make small time DDoS attacks mute. Note small time would be 10-100khps. You get a DDoS by 'Anonymous' and bummer for you. Then when your users authenticate, the pages etc, are hosted in BKK and local so you get high speed connectivity for local authenticated users. this may be more of a cost than you are hoping for but I hope this helps.

  22. BIGRICK, wow what a response (definately post of the month or better). Hopefully you won't be mad if I plagorize that in emails to friends.

AEON... AKA AEON SPOT. At least 56 locations in BKK and seemingly always in a mall.

Link to ATM location lookup: http://www.aeon.co.th/aeon/af/aeon/customsrvc/service/locationchannel.do?channelId=-8765&selectedChannels=-8568,-8765

  23. ok wow. So I thought I would click on this link so I could see where to stay away from. Since I dress like a tourist (tshirt and cargo shorts) and am almost as white as ivory with blonde hair, I stick out quite a bit. Anyway, I was quite shocked to see Lat Phrao on there since I live on soi 130 and frequently walk to mall bangkapi on Lat Phrao and walk back (even at night). I have walked around after a few liters of leo after eating at "The Fish" on soi 130 and lat phrao. which is just about right in the middle of the two Lat Phrao soi's (and accross the street) that are mentioned in the article.

I have heard of a few issues from my Thai friend where a foreigner (he thinks british or american) got a bit frisky with his sister (grabbed her hand and tried to talk her into coming to his condo building, or similar stuff. Maybe because I am tall and not skinny or that I don't wear any jewelry or watch and regularly eat off the carts and don't look rich. who knows.

Well I won't be going down those Soi's since there is nothing that I want to see down there but this was quite a surprise since I have had more problems in Pratunam (attemped pick pocket, tuk tuk holiday free ride scam, meter not working taxi, etc etc.).

  24. I understand it is about 1500 baht for a taxi down to Pattaya/Jomtien and usually that doesn't include toll cost. I have taken a taxi back for a (negotiated) 800 baht plus tolls. I did that once and now I just take the bus. I go from Ekamai bus station and not the airport but I believe it to be about the same at 124ish baht and it should be 90 minutes instead of 120 from Ekamai. Then it is a baht bus down to Jomtien for 30-50 (negotiated) baht depending where on beach road you want to go, or otherwise a local taxi for who knows how much.

From BKK for me (including the 12 baht boat to Ekamai) it costs less than 190 baht each way as compared to at least 2500 R/T (including tolls) by taxi.

This of course is just FYI as well for those that do not already know this.

(and although I have been lurking here (after being referred by a farong retiree friend I met on my 1st trip to LOS) and getting quite good information from this site, yes this is my first post:)
