  1. It also depends on the outcome of the UK election if Blair wins it will remain stable if Howard gets in confidance could be lost. Intrest rates will be going up again soon as inflation figures highest for 5 years yesterday - high interest rates comntinue to keep the pound strong. If Howard gets in you could see the UK housing market go boom and bust again, the house prices have already probably peaked if a sharp fall occurs negative equity for many then the interest rate will go down and the pound will lose value. Another risk is the Chinese floating and de linking from the Dollar. This will no doubt see most regional currencies rise in value.

Most polls this morning put Balir between 5 and 9 points adhead.

  2. The 750 Baht rooms in the honey are not great ask for a mini suite 1300 Baht the rates have gone up recently. Also be aware that it now usually full of American Servicemen so book in advance, you can by e mail.

  3. This is not a new story _ I first encountered this in 1988 - Thai Farmers Bank that used to be where the Bush Gardens Bar is anyone remember big steps - I used to send 10000 baht per month by wire from Saudi to my 18 yr old tilac now my wife of 16 years with 2 great kids. She had her account raided twice by bank staff - when she went to complain it was dissmissed - a young percieved service girl with no comeback. The bank staff pocket the money and the complaint is dismissed. I then set up a monthly transfer from Lloyds offshore Jersey after the same thing happened the were very apologetic and the robbery was reversed. I am sure the same thing applies here - the scamming technology is not that advanced in LOS. I would bet the bank staff are still up to their old tricks tragetting farangs and people who find it difficult to complain and prove theft.

  4. You will find it difficult to get a job by applying to Thai companies from outside Thailand, If you want an expat salary you really need to be placed here by a foreign company operating in Thailand. You must really come to Thailand and live without income for say 6 months and make farang contacts - take up golf it would help. It is unlikely that you would get a job by applying direct to Thai companies as your application would always be behind the Thai nationals. You also must consider that even if you did manage to get a job locally your salary at best would little more than the local rate. I must say that you specialisation in telecoms has many qualified locals.

  5. I replied in this thread due to your comments in the Pattaya thread about the Gauradian report where you first raised the issue of UK ID cards or was that so long ago that you have forgotten.

  6. I read with interest Mertons opinion that it would be easy to introduce ID cards in the UK.  Not so - unlike the USA Great Britain is still a free country although Blair is trying to change that. The introduction may happen but will never be adhered to. The Parlimentary Bill has already been altered to make it non complusary. The connection also made to UK ID Cards and 9/11 is not pertinent.  9/11 was a very American thing caused by American Imperialism and attempted empire building and the result has been a wave of terrorism brought on the rest of the world. The only difference today are the commodities involved - it is now weapons of war and right wing politics. I am gratifed to see it is not working. Fortunaltley today the cost of building an Empire is far more prohibitive and complex than it was in the days of the Raj - when the sun never set.   So the poor old Yanks will just have to remain frustrated colonists as they will never be Emperors.

Got to correct a few things here.

Tha causality was US driven due to their foreign policy.

I wrote that it was easier to change your identity in the UK because there were no ID cards. I also implied that this was surprising given the reactions in the UK after 911.

You seem to be saying that 911 was a purely US affair. The reality is far from it.

After over 30 years of ex-pat life I returned to the UK last year. One of the greatest difficulties, despite having passport and birth certificate, was opening a bank account.

The reason given by my bank manager was this:

    1. They have had to impose stringent identity checks post 911

    2. There is no recognised single document in the UK that can guarantee a person’s identity.

  7. In answer to all -- Identity cards would not haved stopped the murder of the police officer only stricter border controls and a clamp down asulyum seekers will do that- but none of the main stream UK parties have the real guts to address it for fear of being branded Non PC or racist. If we stopped the bad guys entering in the first place they would not be needed.

  9. Spent 6-months working in Bangalore great place nice people - lots of really good nightlife. Workwise both Indian men and women are far more proffesional than other places in Asia such as LOS. Lots of real poverty outside the affluent areas - far more than Thai villages.

  10. The farang dead are deported and fined if they have overstayed their visa. The next time on the way out if you think the smelly fat bald old git next to you is just passed out pissed think again. Did you actualy see him get on??
