  1. As said Home Pro at Carrefour on Ratchada is large - as is the newer one at Carrefour on Latphao Road.  You will find more imported and better quality items than in most normal hardware stores.  But for normal quality bulk nails/screws and such the larger two or three shophouse hardware store probably has the best selection but are not set up for look and pick customers.  If you are willing to get a little dirty they will probably let you visit back room storage area to help yourself if you want.  Most major side roads will have such a store but not familiar with CBD but suspect a taxi ride to Chinatown might be in order.  When all else fails you can usually find what you need in that area.

  2. To work in Thailand you will need a work permit and unfortunately you wont qualify for one

Cheers for your reply Bronco, but I have already been approved for a WP just as soon as I send them my new employment details.

Unfortuately you will find it difficult as your location is not well endowed with western type establishments - most of the big hotels employ Thai chefs who can cook both western and thai

  3. It has been really poor recenlty I have been sending medium size boxes back to Uk around 10Kg for about two years now usulally send them Economy Air mail and they normally turn up within 30-40 days. Recenly they have been taking much longer one even arrived by surface mail. The key i think is ensuring that the PO staff put on the corrcet labels ect as the ones that came surface did not have the Econmony Air mail Labels. The sorting staff propably go by this.

  4. What 3 people would you most like to have a night on the beer with in Bangkok and why:

    Mine are:

Jack Nicholson - Because he's a fat balding old git - but still one of the coolest guys on the planet

Clive James - Wiitty guy who is an Aussie that really wants to be a Brit

Saddam Hussien - I would really like to know what he thinks of it all

  5. Hi, I am going to bangkok in may for 5 weeks and hoping to do a bit of traveling but i dont know what currency is best to take with me to exchange or am i better with traveler cheques   :o  also is the petchburi / phatunam area a good place to stay

Your first question could be rephrased as 'which currency will appreciate the greatest against the baht during my stay'?

    Hmmmm.

If anyone 'knows' the answer to this they should be too busy trading fx to answer.

If anyone says 'traveller's cheques" they shouldn't be too busy trading fx (ever).

The rest might consider using the site's search engine. Because as harryhacker says the question has "been discussed many times on here" & in many different guises...

Your second question might include a little more detail, if you'd like others to offer their opinions - ie., what exactly do you mean by "is the petchburi / phatunam area a good place to stay"

How would you define a good place to stay? What are your interests? Your requirements? Budget? Hotel or apartment? How long are you staying for and with whom - family? Alone? etc etc.

    Good luck! :D

Thanks for the advice i am a 43 year old male traveling alone i will be in thailand for five weeks and i saw a hotal on the internet for £9.00 a night and thought this was a good price for a 3 star hotel it is in petchburi road close to the world trade center i was wondering if it is walking distance to the shops and bars (good place to stay) as i will just chill out on my first week with some shopping and a few beers, or will i have to use a taxi or sky train. (not so good).

    Whats the hotel called

  6. Got the same thing about a year ago doc told me it was hand washing detergent stopped using it things got better used some antisecptic cream to clear up the cuts the a good quality hand moisturising cream for the rest the peleing did spread to my fingers before it cleared up though.

  7. No doubt the UK Civil Aviation Authority will hear about this - the aircrew should log it as an incident but probably will not hopefully ramp checks on their Aircraft in the UK will now inctrease - it is probably why they are ceasing flights to UK - not confident that their servicing meets the CAA standards. They will continue into Holland where checks are less rigourous. Stay clear of this outfit.

  8. according to various government people i've spoken to who are involved with the new airport, it seems that both domestic and air cargo will be relocated to Suvarnabhumi.

for obvious reasons, i think the domestic and international terminal should be close to each other to allow for easy transfers in and out bound.

people i've spoken to in logistics also say that it is better for air cargo services to be located together with the international terminal, although i can't really figure why from a logistics management point of view.

however from the airport's point of view the AOT (now a publicly listed company)would obviously want to have air cargo relocated because it forms a very significant part of revenues.  the new airport will be the single largest terminal in the world, so i'd imagine they need to utilise it to the fullest capacity in order to recoup the investment early on.  the government has also announced its intention to further develop the Suvarnabhumi area into an "Aerotropolis", a fully integrated, satellite city of some 290 sq km with air transport, logistics, convention centres, and various other commercial, residential and entertainment zones.

as to Don Muang, i'd say it would at least partially be an extention of the existing military airbase, as well as to serve the massive new government center soon to be located at Chaeng Wattana.  it might also serve as a cheaper alternative for regional budget airlines that do more point-to-point business and who may want to pay less landing fees and other charges, although i'm sure the AOT would object if they had their way.

The reason for cargo and passenger co-location is logistically very simple - many passenger aircraft also carry priority frieght which in many cases has to be cross docked to pure freighters for onward transmission.

  9. Make sure that when you go to the airport you have proof of payment to the agent in case they try to withdraw the funds - if the ticket is definately confirmed then they have paid the airline - but they may try something underhand like saying you have not paid.

  10. As a Thai fellow (although I don't speak for all of us)....  I shower twice a day and bathed professionally around 2-3 times a week.  I've also been told on numberous occasions both here and abroad that my excrement smells sweet as well.

Compared to most places, I'd say the LOS is relatively BO free (but by no means completely free).

    :o

    Nothing is free in Thailand
