I need to do some yearly blood tests , but I do not need to see a doctor.   So where can I find a blood lab in CM ?  Cheap and reliable. Thanks.

LANNA LAB ..... West bound lane Mahidol half way between Ping River and Airport Plaza......look for sign. Very professional.

I pay 220 Baht for TSH reading with results emailed to my home computer 2 hours later. Lady owner is an M.D. and they do

tests for various hospitals in the area.

  3. I use Pooch Resort in San Patong. Easy to find info... Call or email Ron for rates.

I believe Pooch Resort is a doggery, not a cattery.

    ~o:37;

When Ron moved his enterprise from Hang Dong to San Patong some years ago he created an up-scale cattery quite separate from the doggery. I have used his facilities for over 10 years for both my dogs and cat when I travel.

You need to get out more orang........

  4. This is from the 'Truth or not' category from a Thai guy 12 years ago........In 2004 I bought a 2 story house built in year 2000. It had a nice fireplace and chimney as did most of the larger homes in the moo baan. I looked up the chimney and there was no flue or damper. As everyone knows with out those devices the heat generated is going straight up and out. The Thai guy gave me the answer. It all began before electric fans and air conditioning.

First it is 'STATUS'........The chimney is a way of telling everyone who passes by you have wealth.

Second........On a real hot humid summer day all windows and doors would be closed; a small fire would be built in the fire place which would draw the humidity and heat from inside the house and up the chimney.

Makes sense to me and the mantle gives us a place to display our wedding photo and my urn when the time comes.

  5. What do you dislike about Vietnam?

It's personal. Let's leave it at that.

Damn car horns almost 24 hours.........2009 never got used to them.

Da Nang.......Down town or China Beach.....day trips South to Hoi An........North to Dong Ha overnite. If you rent motorcycles even more fun......like Chiang Mai on steroids (with horns). Good food and friendly people. Great RnR destination.

  6. Need to have it returned by registered post.

Not a requirement to SAE registered, mine have always used EMS going and 3 baht return. Sent afternoon one day and arrived at immigration the next day even with the Lamphun side trip. Stamped that afternoon and immigration posts it the next day and arrived a day after that. So 3-4 days maximum turnaround consistently on all my 90 day mail ins so far.

Not a requirement, but recommended. Sent stuff with 3 baht stamp before & never heard of again.

After 12 years pissin' and moaning about the lousy Thai Post service I decided to try mailing in my 90 day report this past Friday at 12 noon, HangDong Post Office.

I followed TYWAIS directions to a 'T' and chose to send and receive by EMS. Cost 74 Baht round trip or the cost of one 'tall boy' beer.

The friendly Post counterman provided a receipt with the # EN494789682TH for the going and EN494789679TH for the return trip to my home. At http://www.thailandpost.com/home.php........English.........Track and Trace....I followed the travel of my 90 day report.

It arrived at Imm Monday AM (closed Sat & Sun) and started the return trip Tues the 28th......arriving at my home 29th @ 3 PM by letter carrier. I had to sign for the letter.

I copied and pasted all Track & Trace activity to an email to myself and with the receipt had constructive evidence in the event of "lost in the mail".

An interesting fact from the Post counterman.....ALL MAIL FROM THIS AREA GOES TO LAMPHUN FOR SORTING AND RETURNED FOR DELIVERY....

As the result of this 'over the top' expenditure I am going to have one less beer this quarter........

  7. All I hear there at 4:30 PM is a lady telling stories in Thai and now a Northern Thai song. Oddly enough, 88.0 Mhz is playing American Country Western and Classic Rock.

T-Dog.........You're up there North of Town, I forgot to mention Hang Dong area. Sorry ..........but just for the heck -of-it try moving your antenna around.

    SF/JR

  8. FM 98.5 Chiang Mai after a few weeks regrouping is back with a new format and the same old music from the 50's, 60's, 70's and 80's............popular and country

/western American music. 4PM to 6 PM or as I call it 'Cocktail Hour'. Enjoy

  9. I cannot help you but I know who can. He has had his PR over 10 years acquiring it in Bangkok. He is a friendly guy and I think he would be happy to talk to you.

His name is Guy and with his wife own and operate 'The Mexican Grill' restaurant on the West side of Canal Road about 1 kilometer South of the Suthep intersection on the North bound lane across the canal from the large gas station.

Stop by for a good Tex/Mex dinner and introduce yourself. He's the always gracious host with the big Texas drawl.

  10. Thanks, I actually went to the HD office a few months ago, maybe got unlucky, as was directed to a guy (sitting behind the counter to the left), and he said I need my UK Birth Cert, and asked if the cert. showed my parents full name and birth place? Sounds crazy to me, that they should need that much history/detail. I said my UK Birth cert doesn't show that, so then he started going on about how I needed to declare these details (about my parents) and have this affirmed by the UK consulate. They also wanted my husband to bring the leader of the moobaan to visit the amphur in person.

All the other docs required (as listed above) are pretty easy, it was just this birth cert thing. which is a pain to get, and makes me wonder if I really need this, and if the requirements change based on which officer you see !

PS> I asked the officer that I saw, if there was a printed list of requirements, and he said there was no official printed list! Kaptain Rob, did you get yours a long time ago? i wonder if rules have changed

IIRC, my wife filled out details re my parents names but I was not asked for a birth certificate. This was only last year, around June, and having my wife speak nicely may have smoothed the process plus we had the kamnan and a prominent lady friend as witnesses.

There was a printed list which we viewed, even if no copy received, but I seem to remember taking something away which was in Thai and on a small yellow slip.

When dealing with stumbling blocks such as the birth certificate one must ask politely how to get around this as there's always a way... Eg Perhaps with names and relationships written on copy of your passport.

We had a totally different experience at Hang Dong.We were directed, by the girl at the front desk, to speak to the head man ,who sits to the left as mentioned .He totally ignored me and began what

could only be described as an interrogation of my wife eg where did we meet ? how long had we been married ? where did she come from ? where did she work ?etc etc I politely called a stop to this as it

had relation to me getting a yellow book.He referred us back to the counter saying you don't need a yellow book, why do you need one ? I told him the obvious, licence renewal etc etc. We had all the

application forms filled in,passport, residence certificate ,photo, etc were never asked for any birth certificates, but realised we had to return with witnesses.

However the deal breaker came when the girl said, in Thai to my wife, "you have to put some money in an envelope under the application when you return".My wife translated for me and the girl spoke

English. By this stage I was seriously peed off and said to her "we don't do corruption" we know the book costs very little. Her reply was "everyone does it" We walked out never to return.

Now I realise that its quite common practice when selling or buying property to give a small amount to speed the process up ,we did that in Bangkok and at the same office in Hang Dong when we

bought in Hang Dong, well the seller did, but this whole experience was quite unpleasant and nobody else I have spoken to has experienced the same obstruction or a demand for extra payment so

obviously things have changed, this was about 18 mths ago.

I had the same experience as @SPARKLES some years ago when Chiang Mai Immigration stopped issuing residency certificates.

My Thai wife is totally intimidated by Thai male officials and was speechless so I interceded and it was not pleasant. The boss man informed me the yellow book was for "dealing

in the buying and selling of automobiles and real estate which I could not do on a retirement visa".......got up turned his back and walked away. The female assistant then

approached us and said I should go to the American Consulate for a residency certificate when needed.

As well in 2006 after 2 years of working to clear the title deed of the home we purchased in BWT, Hang Dong, upon appearing to register the residence in my wife's name I was

informed to place 50,000 Baht in an envelope to expedite the issuance of the chanote (title deed). The alternative was a two year wait. I paid the money and the completed

document appeared thirty minutes later........no further comment needed.

  11. Some years ago I had a similar problem in a similar type moo baan.

I sought legal recourse and found there is no law that prevents anyone from having animals of any type on their personal property in the entire country.

Noise has no effect on local people as they grow up with it. You might say it is part of their culture.

My situation was resolved to my satisfaction shortly thereafter as the rooster and one hen died of lead poisoning and the remaining hens were dispatched by several soi dogs who managed to find their way into the hen house. All under the cover of darkness of course.

The neighbor, a very religious man accepted it as karma and now grows banana and mango trees.

I love big dogs and hate centipedes, scorpions and roosters.

  12. From Jan to Jun 1969 I flew as a doorgunner (US Marine Corps) out of Phu Bai, Mag 36, HMH-462 CH-53 B ..........78 missions and only shot down once 18 hits and landed on a friendly LZ (Stud). At the time the most expensive helicopter in the war and the fastest. We had great pilots.....many Korean War jet jockeys who transitioned to fly in the war. Oh for you youngins' it was the American War in Vietnam and we were winnin' when I left..................

should have stayed longer,....and witnessed the Vietnamese winning....!!!!

that was something little guys in pyjamas kicking the ass of the most powerful army of the moment.....!!!

"Little guys in pajamas" is not a fair description of the warriors of Vietnam. They were committed Communist and experienced guerrilla fighters while American allied forces were using conventional tactics. They killed over 58,000 of us and wounded over 300,000. Maybe we should have not been there in the first place.

  14. One on the Mae Rim Rd is very professional, but a little cold and impersonal, its clearly a business first and foremost.. I also doubt the claims they make about how much time the dogs spend free roaming, I suspect its a lot less then they tell you it is, which makes it something closer to caged boarding. I also had a issue where one price was agreed, deposit paid and on return he tried to charge me a (slightly) higher day rate, insisting he didnt agree the earlier rate, luckily I happened to have the receipt which is unusual as I dont normally keep paper for much time. Then he got all huffy and acted like he was being ripped off and all "next time cannot this price" when he clearly quoted me that.. It is however very clean and efficient, they can wash your dog before you return (extra fees) and they photograph the dogs daily and send these images to you via facebook albums and tagging, my wife likes that a lot. I just dont get a really caring vibe from it.

Also theres pooch resort, which has moved from saraphi to the san patong side of hang dong.. If I will be a little blunt, the guy who runs this seems a teeny bit away with the fairies, but he clearly loves dogs, understands them, and they are full time allowed to be out and loose.. Its very much slacker and less professional than the above, but oddly I feel like he cares more about each animal as an individual.. I trust him to 'care' about my dog more.

plus 1 for Pooch Resort ................Google it. Have a 50 kilo German Shepherd dog who has his own suite there when we travel.

I guess you mean something like this, Myshkin, don't you?

    http://www.haibike.de/produkte_liste_epower_en,3004.html

Research prices, think of the tax and customs tariff to officially import these vehicles and immediately you'll understand why you hardly will find any place selling electric mountain bikes like these in Chiang Mai soon ...

If you really want one there's only one way: Buy (and try) it in the country where you pay the least, forget about warranty, find out a feasible option to bring the battery(s) to Thailand and fly back with the bike as part of your luggage. Make sure the bike doesn't look new anymore and you should not have any problem at the customs.

But for this solution I would suggest to have at least a certain solid level of technical background/experience otherwise quick disappointment will be preprogrammed.

Yes Rebo, thank you, that's exactly what I was looking for, sorry if the title wasn't clear. It was meant for a friend of mine who has some health issues and tires very quickly, but who would still enjoy and appreciate some of the pleasures and the freedom that mountain biking provides. Your comments are spot on, I visited several bicycle stores in Chiang Mai when I bought my own MTB, and never did I see any electric one.

My friend is scheduled to fly back to Europe in a couple of months I will pass him your useful informations in case he persists in that direction. As for me, and as long as health permits, I will continue to sweat and suffer with the real stuff.

Myshkin.......They are available somewhere in CM as I often see an elderly Thai lady riding one around Banwangtan/HangDong most every afternoon.....FYI

  16. Sent registered mail on 12 September (about two weeks before the required report date), processed by Immigration on 15 September and completed receipt received on 19 September. Total elapsed time: one week!

The new receipt of notification (which --- don't forget --- you place in your passport) is computer-generated with a bar code recording your passport number. It contains two very clear notices in English which notify that the report is NOT an extension of stay and which notes the next reporting date.

NOTE: The Immigration Office did write a PO Box number as part of their address, both on the receipt and on the return envelope I provided. You should now address your report to P.O. Box 882 as part of the address noted by Tywais in the pinned thread. That might even speed things up further.

It is not necessary to send a report by registered mail (cost: Bt18), but it may give you some comfort in case of lost mail. I personally have never had mail misplaced in ten years or so. Up to you. For the budget-conscious, If you comfortable not going to the post office and have a clear return address, the whole process costs (for four quarterly reports annually) all of Bt24 (including postage for the return envelopes) plus the cost of envelopes and some photocopies.

Each to her own, but one agent charges Bt1500 a year, I believe: some 60x more. The difference is obviously worth more than a few cheap beers. I note this since, judging from a recent thread, there seems to be an intense interest in the cost of beer! biggrin.png Otherwise, it beats hell out of visiting the office.

Mapguy............Sometimes your posts 'drive me up a wall'..........and then there are posts like this that are 'spot on' for those of us who are 'not the brightest bulb in the package'.

I have been avoiding THAI POST for over a decade after a bad experience and now THAI IMMIGRATION has become even more distasteful.......so I'll be using the lesser of the two evils to maintain accountability with the other.

Thanks for posting the easy instructions and lending your support. If my '90 day report' becomes 'lost in the mail' you will hear from me !! LOL's

  17. Ten years ago Banwangtan in section 5C had far fewer homes than now and had a soi dog problem with the dogs running in a pack. It got serious when a female went into heat and the males fought for the alpha dog position.

One day I was upstairs looking out the window of a back bedroom at a group of dogs running the street when I saw a pickup come to a stop with a half dozen young men in back who dismounted with with nets resembling very large tennis rackets. The young men immediately started pursuing the dogs who started running for their lives seemingly knowing what was going down. I found it amusing and was actually cheering for the dogs.

The new method of controlling the homeless dog situation in Banwangtan is a group of residents keep the animals in one area by feeding them and then one day they disappear.......I assume to one of the homeless shelters in CM. I commend this group as it appears there is an endless supply of unwanted pets in the area delivered to Banwangtan by irresponsible owners knowing the Buddhist middle class owners here will feed them. A new group of dogs is forming now.

I personally do not have a problem with the homeless dogs as when my dog Bruno, a 150 lb German Shepherd Dog and I go for a walk everyone runs.

  18. Went for my 90 day reporting 10 days ago. 3 hour wait with 70 people ahead of me in the cue at 2:15pm on Friday.

2 hours for me last Wednesday. The last few visits were much better. I'm afraid things are reverting back to normal.

Wasn't that the day before the four day holiday and the day after. If it was you had good service. Also nice to know what time you showed up. Seems like more and more are going in the afternoon.

Any body been in there lately in the late afternoon?wai2.gif

My 90 day reporting was due last Monday the 18th so I showed up at my usual time of 3 PM on the 19th and was given a number with so many people ahead of me it would have been 5 PM before my number would have come up. So I left.

I returned at 11 AM Tuesday and was given a number I calculated would not come up until 2 PM, so I left.......went grocery shopping and home returning at 2 PM.

Now there were only 5 ahead of me. And then the guy ahead of me goes up with a stack of passports. That's OK there are two officials processing the alien passports. And then a well dressed Thai lady comes forward, whispers in the Thai officials ear while a well dressed Caucasian foreigner shows up and hands in his passport.....no number called out/none visible. I almost went ballistic. I have just wasted 2 days trying to do one 90 day report.

I have been doing this nonsensical waste of time reporting the same address and phone number for 12 years. I am ready to pay someone to do it for me.

My mental health is worth more than a few Thai Baht.

  19. I also ride a hybrid, Trek 7200 for the past 6 years. Every Thursday 40 kilometers in two hours is my primary goal; cardiovascular exercise my mission. I ride mostly local roads in the Big C (Hang Dong Road) / San Patong / Lamphun triangle. This area is comprised of interconnecting paved roads with villages separated by vast rice paddies. I use a GPS to monitor my location and speed. I also do shorter rides during the week in the same area if I have an hour or so free. Customarily I ride alone.

PM me if you have similar interest and want to see the area.

    What GPS do you use/recommend,plz?

GARMIN.......GPS map 60CSx ($200+) with handlebar mount from Garmin Pantip Plaza ..........bought EBAY out of Michigan.........priority mail to my home in Hang Dong insured for $100 .....2 weeks later note from Hang Dong PO to come to PO to pay duty based on $100........200 Baht.

Contacted http://rotweilermaps.com/maps.cfm in BKK for map of Western Thailand (Mae Sai to Phuket).....downloaded to laptop on to 60CSx.

Always carry it with me hiking, in my car traveling, on my motorcycle and always on my bicycle.
