  1. The air quality in Hang Dong South of Chiang Mai city is absymal. I have lived near the glide path for the airport in BanWangTan for ten years. My wife and I have learned to keep doors and windows closed always with fans circulating the air continually. In summer months multiple air conditioners with electrostatic filters are necessary to filter the air. I change the filters every 6 months as they go from white to black in short order and wash fan blades every 3 months as the black filth seems to find it's way in.

I don't have a breathing problem but I am discerning as I came to Chiang Mai from living 15 years on Maui in Hawaii, a real clean air paradise. I think the old story "you get what you pay for" applies here.

And don't forget your 3M surgeons mask when riding your motorcycle It could add months to your life not to mention your helmet with a sturdy face shield. It just ain't clean out there.

  2. CM Imm is working lunch hours (12 AM- 1 PM) to process 90 day address reporting (TM47) now.

I was told this by the officer who did my retirement extension a few weeks ago.

Today Dec 6 I was in town killing time until 3 Pm to go into Immigration for my 90 day report when at 12:15 I found myself close by to Immigration and decided to drop in to see if I could do the 90 day report.

The waiting room was 50% occupied with people waiting for the afternoon session. The ticket machine was off so I went directly to the 90 day report window,

handed my completed paper work. Five minutes later I was out the door good to go for another 90 days. The system is working.

  3. I met Ken Chapman in April 1992 at a combat veterans group meeting in Maui, Hawaii.

Ken had been a Warrant Officer Pilot in 1965/1966 in the U.S.Army flying medivac helicopters. He was very proud of the fact that he never allowed 'guns' (mounted machine guns) on his bird saying he "went to war to save lives, not take them". He was awarded the 'Distinguished Flying Cross' by his government for one of his deeds going into a very hot LZ to bring out wounded.

We were members of the Vietnam Veterans of Maui County and the Street Bikers United organizations on Maui.

Twice we road motorcycles from L.A. to 'The Wall' in Washington D.C. with our group from Maui for Memorial Day.

The summer of 2001 after 15 years on Maui both Ken and I left; he came to Thailand, I went to mainland U.S. 18 months later I came to Chiang Mai to visit him and his new wife Tuy. 17 days later he introduced me to a lady who became my wife.

Ken was the ultimate raconteur, always happy when telling a good story and always a gentleman.

  6. In support of the OP, some years ago I was given a website to acquire a copy of my DD-214 and my Service Record Book (SRB).

Upon receiving my DD-214 at my home in Hang Dong I applied for a copy of my SRB. Within a month a copy of my SRB was sent to me complete from the day of my original enlistment in June 1958 to the date of final separation June 1969.

    That website is................ http://www.archives.gov/veterans/military-service-records/

  7. djillali.....

I have just returned from a week on NaJomtien Beach, 15 minutes South of Pattaya, 10 hours driving time from Chiang Mai.

Neat, clean 1 bedroom, shower with hot water, fridge/TV with 150 channels/new A/C cottage 200 meters from the beach on Gulf of Thailand.

1500 Baht a night (with breakfast) with a sizable discount for a 1 month booking. Be aware that March is a windy month so if your are into water sports (kite surfing, wind surfing, Hobie cats) or just happy to watch from the beach shaded by huge ironwood trees, this is the place to go.

Multiple restaurants are nearby with fresh farmed lobster, crab, grouper, etc and my favorite a Thai restaurant on the beach serving Bangkok Thai food.

Downtown Pattaya is only 20 minutes driving time away and by my recent assessment 'one big party town'. Makes Chiang Mai look like an 'old folks home'..............

    Good Luck

  8. M7E you are a good person and have a trusting soul..........however in the future consider 'caveat emptor' (buyer beware).

Ten years ago my wife was taken advantage of by Siam TV and to this day will not enter their premises. A Thai woman scammed can be fierce.

Also involving a water heater she bought as NEW. It ceased to function after one month......a technician investigating found it to be a RECONDITIONED unit that was mechanically worn out/not repairable. It looked new on the exterior however no warranty. 3000 baht ten years ago to a working woman was a lot of money.

Since that time we have given our business to Niyom Phanich on Mahidol and Lotus Hang Dong. We may pay more but the product and service is excellent.

  9. For the past few month's Modern Radio at FM 100.75 between 3 PM and 6 PM daily play American music from the 50's, 60's, 70's and 80's exclusively ...........Thai DJ's, Thai advertisements, American oldies. The best of both worlds.

Loud and clear in Hang Dong daily.........I am recording on cassette daily for the day they change format and we all know they will eventually. Good music and memories for those who lived through this era.

  11. Various sizes of surgical tubing can be found at the medical supply shop on Chiang Moi road about four shops past the Bangkok Bank (same side of street) across from Wororot Market.

Best to take a small sample for fast service.

    I bought 2 meter's for 120 baht last week.

And yes it is for a sling shot(s). Local soi dogs can attest to the quality.

  12. Here is my recent story........Retirement visa due for renewal Oct 1, 2010.

I showed up Sept 28 at 8:05 A.M. and was given ticket #220 meaning there were 19 renewals ahead of me........I left !!

I returned Oct 1 at 7 A.M. sharp; was #1 standing at the locked glass door. At 7:10 the parking lot started to fill. Line was forming behind me. At 7:45 the door was unlocked and number tickets were selected. I was #1. All seats inside were taken.

At 8 A.M. reservation numbers were handed out; those holding number tickets were first. I was number 201. It was standing room only, inside and out.

At 8:30 sharp my number appeared above the desk of the interviewer. At 9 A.M. I walked out signed, sealed and delivered for one more year.................Have all of your paperwork completed as required before showing up.

It is the one day a year it pays to get up early..........

  14. Star Visa Service, 408Vichayanon Road (just off NE corner of the moat) - good friendly service- located about 100 meters West of USA consulate. They do it all, this is their job.

They translated my USA marriage document and others, sent them to BKK for registration and back in 4 days at a reasonable cost.

  15. Update to driving South from Chiang Mai, highway 11 to points South as of Monday 21 Dec '09..........

Chiang Mai to Lampang........no problems........Lampang to Den Chai over the mountain 2 lane highway slow going no change until 50 K South a 5 kilometer stretch construction both lanes smooth base in place but sloppy as water is used to hold dust. Short section one way with flag men using walkie-talkies. Uttaradit to Phitsanulok good mostly divided highway.

Strongly recommend highway 117 Phitsanulok to Nakhon Sawan joining highway 1/32 South to Bangkok. Good, mostly divided highway.

South of Phitsanulok on highway 11 about 100 kilometers there is a 10 K length of broken concrete being repaved with most laying open with liquid asphalt/tack coat exposed over the full width. No choice but to drive over it. No problem if you are driving a black car.

Return trip Nakhon Sawan to Chiang Mai, Hwys 117 and 11.......Sunday 9 AM to 3 PM.....6 hours with two 15" stops.

As always drive carefully as though your life depends on it.......Jolly Roger
