  1. As of last Thursday Makro Hang Dong had a new supply of large bottle cases.....12 to a case.

Tesco Lotus Hang Dong road has single big bottles.........buy 12 and you have a case.

A tip on Pepsi Max............there is a BF (before) date on every can or bottle. If you are not going to consume the contents before that date do not buy it.

I have had them go flat exactly on that date.......

  2. Follow up..............Bought at Makro.....two units.......#1 45cm wide by 90cm long #2 45cm wide by 120cm long......high gloss black painted steel....... 4 adjustable levels......#1 1300 baht #2 1800 baht .........works for me.

Thanks Lobo for the heads up !

  3. In the Chiang Mai vicinity has anyone seen metal home workshop shelving and pegboard for sale in a retail store.

The termites just had my wooden shelving for lunch and I've got a lot of stuff now on the floor.

    The floor space is 8' X 10'.

I've been to the big box stores to no avail.

    Thank you for your suggestions............JR

  4. From 1990 to 2000 after trying several noted brands of tires on my Harley FXSTS and getting only 6000 to 8000 miles miles on them I tried Avon. Constant 10,000 miles (on rear) between replacement. I would recommend them with one caveat......be careful riding on wet roads. Avon are hard rubber....hence the good mileage. 'nuff said.

  5. Vagabond........Directly across the moat from Highonthai's suggestion is an auto parts store near the KODAK studio, on the corner. Father & son shop. Father is knowledgeable...speaks pidgin English....helps to take the old part with you. Good selection of lubricants, tools and replacement parts.

Also 200 meters North of the NE corner of the moat is another auto parts/hardware store. Owner speaks good English. If not in stock he will tell you where to go to find it.

Strongly suggest to always take the part you want to replace with you unless you speak fluent Thai. In order to 'save face' they will tell you 'no have' solely because they cannot understand what you are trying to tell them.

  6. Follow-up.....final post.

    Solution to problem found..............ALLERGIES !

For 12 weeks have been receiving two injections every Wednesday....0ne in each arm.

Both senses of smell and taste are returning......about 80% at the moment.

Program calls for injections every week for a year. My Doctor at Meechok Plaza in Chiang Mai is American educated and knowledgeable.

Amazing how life can be affected when the senses of smell and taste are blocked. Life is good once again!

  7. Follow-up and final post on this subject.

'System temporary files' maxed out last week at 600MB daily removed by CCleaner.

Now back to normal on the Lenovo and the desk top with XP is acting strangely with same symptoms.

The hard drive activity light on the Lenovo seldom flashes now.

The only change has been the monthly updates from Microsoft.

    Hmmmmm !!!

  8. Those of you who are able to get a Yellow Book should do so as you will never have the need for a Residency Certificate again.

Last week for the 3rd time in the last 6 months I went to district office for yellow book. They always have some reason why I don't qualify. This time different supervisor and she says I do qualify however first requirement she said was go to immigration for certificte of residence.

Same thing happened to me this past Monday at Hang Dong Ampur. The officer in charge looked over our paper work saying "no certificate of residency........go to Immigration and get one" .

He then stood up and walked away.

His assistant then came over and said......"if you do not buy and sell real estate or vehicles frequently you do not need one. It is not for foreigners on retirement visa".

  9. If you surfing on many websites a few hundred MB of temporary files is very normally. Think about every picture on every website you visited will be saved temporary on your computer. If you only open http://www.thaivisa.com I guess you will load already 3-4MB just by loading the Front Page. Pictures of News-Threads and a lot of Advertisments pictures on websites will be saved,

Mine is 56 MB - on XP. Haven't cleaned it for ages.

    Edit:

29 MB of that is in two files - both Google updates for Picasa. So I'll delete them.

Suggest you sort the folder by clicking on the "Size" column header and see if you have any really big files you can safely delete.

And if they keep coming back, find out what program is generating them and why. If not needed, stop the program doing it.

Thank you gentlemen for your response.

I also have two machines with XP and they are normal compared to the new Lenovo with windows 7.

<Suggest you sort the folder by clicking on the "Size" column header and see if you have any really big files you can safely delete.>

jetsetBkk............Could you elaborate a bit on this suggestion as I have no idea where to begin.

I seldom surf the internet........Thaivisa.com daily is pretty much it.

About a month ago the hard drive light started blinking constantly as though the hard drive is working constantly.

The TASK MANAGER shows continuous activity and CPU usage but I do not know how to explore this.

Any suggestions would be helpful..............Thank You

  10. The latest RE-ENTRY stamp and 90 DAY REPORT information Thursday 10 AM........................

Motorcycle parking is now in the next door lot West side. If you are not one of the first 15 to arrive at 6 AM go there.

Arrived Immigration 7 AM #42 in line. By 8 AM there were almost 100 in line across the parking lot.

The first 15 to arrive had numbered seating near the entrance door. The rest of us stood in the morning sun until 8 AM. An umbrella would help as it was very HOT !

8 AM door opens.....received #42 number card......found seat inside.....Thai Immigration staff started calling entrance numbers from center desk....in sequence, no exceptions.

At 8:15 #42 was called I centered myself to their direct front and handed over my completed paperwork for a RE-ENTRY stamp. Upon their approval I was given the station # & reservation #.

I was now assigned station #1 and reservation # 007.......(Bond,James Bond)(I couldn't resist !)..... meaning 6 others were in front of me for a RE-ENTRY.

8:45....007 was called up to submit passport & completed paperwork to station #1. 1 minor oversight.....I had to run out to the copy machine to make copy of last used RE-ENTRY/3 YRS ago.

9:15 AM received passport with RE-ENTRY from center desk and immediately requested a 90 DAY REPORT reservation. 90 Day due date was in two days.

Received #528 with 520 now being served. At 9:30 #528 was called up/approved/bar-code checked and out the door at 9:35 AM. At 9:15 it was announced that anyone with appt #55 or higher...............come back tomorrow.

Conclusions: For RE-ENTRY and/or 90DAY REPORT show up at 9:30 or later and avoid the scrum. For everything else........show up EARLY if you do not have a computer made appt.

I've been doing this for 10 years as a resident and what I see is Thai Immigration doing their best with what they have to work with, making changes for the better almost daily.

The problem is there are one hell-of-a-lot of newby's in town with no idea of how to work with the system.

I'm outta here on RnR for several month's but I'll be back............Jolly Roger

  11. A recent occurrence on my lenovo laptop is giving me concern.

I use Crap Cleaner frequently for the obvious and have noticed the 'system temporary files' category is loading up 200 to 300 megs from 7 AM to 10 AM daily.

Firefox 'temporary internet files' seldom is over 1 meg with daily cleaning.

    600 gb hard drive/ 4 gb ram.

Question: Is this normal or do I have a serious problem festering in the shadows ?

    Thank You

  12. I'm always prepared to 'self rescue' when touring on a motorcycle in a third world country. Here is an extreme example of one of my experiences.

50 kilometers South of Panjim, Goa, India riding alone on my Enfield Bullet I blew the engine while going downhill passing a row of busses.

With the premission of the home owner I parked the motorcycle behind a nearby house and hitchhiked into Panjim.

Upom making contact with the Enfield dealer I hired a dump truck and found 4 coolies nearby, then traveling to where I had left the bike.

After returning to the Enfield shop I spent the next 3 days watching the teenage mechanics doing a top/end job, ensuring their honesty.

Total cost was $40.00 USD and the bike ran great for another month through South India until I sold it for what I paid for it in Poona.

Riding in Northern Thailand since 2002 I have found a little bike for city errands and a big bike for traveling works well.

Enjoy Thailand ......it's good motorcycle country !

  13. Jolly Roger was my road name when I rode with the Vietnam Veterans Motorcycle Club after returning from the American War in Vietnam.

It was also the name of my three boats over the period 1975/85.

My avatar is the ace of spades with the scull and crossbones. I picked up the original in 1967 in a dry rice paddy during a search and destroy operation. It had been dropped by a

psyops airplane as a terror tactic to unnerve the enemy. On the back it says in Vietnamese ..."You are going to die if you continue to fight for the Viet Cong............Surrender or die"

As a terror tactic it has roots going back to the 1600's and the pirates who pillaged shipping in the major oceans. They would always give their victims an opportunity to surrender

before boarding them by flying the scull and crossbones.

Every time I look at it I am reminded how fortunate I am to be alive, healthy and living here in Chiang Mai.....................................

  14. On occasion Lotus, Hang Dong road carry them in the camping supplies dept. And the other poster is correct.........they are built for Thai people, not heavy weights.

Over the years I have bought several there. Very convenient for outdoor events.

  15. I have been target shooting with a Thai slingshot every day at 4 PM for six years. Initially I was seeking a place to take my 150 pound German Shepherd dog to do his business in the 'back 40' of Banwangtan when I found a desolate area ideal for a target range. Currently I have a 180 foot range, a 220 and 250 foot range with 1' wide by 2' tall targets. I use lead shot similar in size to 00 buckshot that I buy at wororot market. I use Thai slingshots as rubbers and pouches are cheap and available at all Thai outdoor markets. Maintenance is quick and easy as rubber bands hold everything together.

I have a wrist rocket and a conventional marksman I brought from USA 10 years ago and would prefer using them however the surgical tubing available in Chiang Mai is not suitable as it is thick wall and not sufficiently elastic.

Slingshots are silent and can be deadly in the hands of someone who knows how to use them.

  16. I have been attempting to regularly use a 3M mask or a Techno mask with a replaceable filter for five years on my weekly ride.

The problem is perspiration/sweat. After 10 KL at 22 to 24 KPH breathing becomes inhibited as the mask becomes sodden with sweat. Often I take the mask off out of frustration if I can still see the mountain.

The only solution I have found to date is to carry spares changing as needed, hanging the wet one from the bars to dry.

Strangely I have seen very few riders wearing masks. Perhaps they are immune or maybe just not aware.

  17. I am having trouble this year 2013 in making an appointment via Queue system. My visa expires the 27 of February and I'm unable to set a time for that day. Any information as to how to proceed would be accepted.

By my 10 years of experience with a 'retirement' visa you may renew up to 30 days before the expiration date but not one day after. If I were you I would search every day from 28 January to 27 February and take any open date available. If none pick any day during this period and go in early with all paperwork completed......................Good luck

    .

  18. I've had the Gold package since 2002 and just last month upgraded to the Platinum package including 17 HD channels. 26,000 Baht for 13 month's which works out to less than 66 Baht a day, 24 hours a day, 365 days a year.

Cheap entertainment for less than the price of a bottle of beer a day.
