It's dead easy to renew your passport in the US. As I recall I went to the post office, filled out some paperwork, got my photo taken, paid a few bucks, and the new passport arrived in the mail a week or two later.
There is also an express service that makes a new passport in a matter of a few days.
To the OP...........Food for thought.........When you show up at Thai Immigration at the Airport on your return trip with a shiny new passport without a valid visa in it the chances are they will give you a 30 day permission to visit and you will have to start the non immigrant visa process all over again.
When the American authorities give you a new passport they invalidate your old passport by punching holes in it and print in red a big CANCELED across the information page. Thai Immigration prefers you have your visa transferred to your new passport within 48 hours as the old passport is no longer valid. You are treading on thin ice.........be careful.

Here is some relatively recent information related to this subject.
My American passport expired January 7, 2014. Last year I bought round trip tickets here in CM to Florida Leaving July 15 and returning September 1, 2013. Obviously there was only were only 4 months and 6 days left on my passport. As well I had less than 6 months left on my passport when I left CM.
There was never a question going or returning (Korean Air).
My retirement visa renewed October 1, 2013. Since my passport was expiring Jan 7, 2014 Immigration would only give to me an extension to Jan 7, 2014 at which time I had to go through the annual extension process again with my new passport. My new annual extension date is now January 7. An expensive and time consuming mistake on my part.
Some other thoughts........If you bought your round trip tickets here you will technically not be traveling to Thailand.....you will be returning to Thailand.
You may renew your American passport anytime up to one year before the expiration date and currently there is a 7 to 10 day turn around from the date you make application until your new one will be available for pickup at which time they will invalidate your old one (which has your current Thai retirement extension in it).
You may renew your Thai retirement annual extension to stay up to 30 days before the current one expires.
I would suggest you try to renew your passport just prior to your retirement extension date so you won't have to go through the hassle of transferring the Thai visa to your new Passport.
Don't forget to make your Immigration appointment 100 days before you need it. Timing will be important in your case.

I will not recommend a Lawyer for you to use however I will make some suggestions for you on this topic from my experience.
Ten years ago I found a residence for sale in a popular moo baan. Manager of the moo baan put me in touch with the seller. We arrived at an equitable purchase price.
As a former Real Estate Broker in America I knew the routine...................in Florida. 1st big mistake !
I employed a local lawyer to do a title search. He assured me the Chanote was clear of liens other than the existing mortgage held by a local bank....2nd big mistake.
On his word a substantial earnest money payment with closing within 6 months. 3rd big mistake.
Time was required for my Thai wife to close the sale on her home.
On the day of closing we met at the lawyers office and completed the necessary paperwork, then retiring to the appropriate Ampur to transfer the Chanote to my wife's name.
FULL STOP.................Ampur will make no changes to the Chanote......There is a CLOUD on the title.
It took me two years and a lot of money to clear the title and accomplish the transfer. The lawyer assigned two subordinates who did not work for free.
Suggest you acquire a copy of the existing Chanote, both sides. If held by a bank go to the bank and get a copy. The seller should assist you.
Go to the appropriate land office with the copy of the Chanote and do a search. My understanding is a title search cannot be done without the information on the Chanote. It will require a Thai assistant if you do not speak Thai. By-the-way there is no such thing as title insurance here.
Or you can throw the dice and hope it doesn't come up 'snake eyes'.
Good luck

Has anyone driven from Chiang Mai to Bangkok and return since the military has been in control of the country using police power through Martial Law ?
My interest concerns Hwy's 11 to Lampang and #1 to Nakhon Sawan and specifically the police check points en-route.
My wife and I had our annual trip to her family home in Nakhon Sawan planned when Martial Law was declared and I postponed it until the political situation settled.
My concern is being restrained at a police check point and forced to unload the car which has taken my wife all day to load with large clothing bags, food stuffs, analog TV's that she spends an entire year collecting for 8 siblings and spouses, many nieces, nephews etc..........every cubic foot in the car is packed tight.
To unload and reload at every check point is not something I want to do. It has not been a problem over the past ten years.......
You say, why not just drive down in an empty car this year ? That is not even a remote possibility as the wife would 'lose face' and we would undoubtedly be 'tarred and feathered'. You see my wife is the only one in the family to have "struck it rich" and is expected to share. They line the path as we arrive applauding.
I don't mind as the agreement is........ no-one comes to Chiang Mai.
Applicable in-put requested........

There is a shop in Wararot market that sells the small flags seen in some sports bars. Im not sure if they also do full size flags but they may know who does if they dont have any. From memory its on the road that separates the 2 halves of the market. Going from the market towards Chang Klan road its on the left hand side about half the way down. Unfortunately I cant be more precise as I havent been there for some while.
Good luck
You are close Kiwi..........It is on Chiang Moi approaching Wararot Market on left is Bangkok Bank, 2 doors past is the flag shop. Also have staffs and lots of Buddha stuff.

I also use POOCH RESORT (now located in San Patong). The staff give personal care to all the animals they board. Not only offering a large communal area there is in a shaded area 3 large suites with an equally large dog house for dogs who don't play well with others. I have a 150 lb (68k) German Shepherd dog that is charged with the security of my home when I'm not there and he is not friendly with anything or anyone other than me and my wife. In visiting this past week I saw the new CAT HOUSE and would recommend it to anyone who has a pussy they would like to board while they travel. PM me for contact info.

Pallets of Coke Light at Macro Hang Dong road as of 17 April 1 PM.
Now no Pepsi Max!

problem is the recall is only likely to solve one of the serious issues with this model the cam and rocker box problem ,,,, does not address the breather over pressuring and gearbox seals failing design problems ,,, newer production bikes have a redesigned engine breather and timing , but Honda are unlikely to do anything about older bikes as they would need a replacement engine to cure the faults .
Well that rips it..............I've decided to run that SOB into the ground while it is still under warranty. Did the same thing to a Harley that was a lemon decades ago.
Thanks <liddelljohn> for the insight. By-the-way would you provide the source of this information?

I'm in Chiang Mai and ride a CB500X now for 10 month's and have two 3 day tours under my belt. Coming up on 5000K I've had to add oil several times. Found this strange for a new technology Honda engine but not distressing as from experience it takes a while for a new engine to seat. Obviously I would have noticed an oil leak.
Just read about the recall and I can see the concern of other new owners. I ride hard without concern for a new engine and figured that was the cause for the disappearing oil. I only go to CM Big Wing to keep my warranty valid as I don't talk technical Thai so don't waste my time or theirs with tech questions.
With a noisy clutch and clunky transmission the only good thing I can say about the machine is the price was right and it's fun to ride. Having ridden motorcycles since 1954 I think I'm qualified to judge American, European and Japanese motorcycles. I've owned more than a few of each over the decades......new and used.
I'll check my numbers and follow up later but I'm not really concerned as with everything in LOS I ride hard, wear it out and go buy another one.

Follow-up 31 March Monday............Wife received a phone call on Saturday from CM Big Wing for me to bring in my CB500X for a FREE recall replacement of a part on the engine. I was surprised as upon checking to see if my serial number was among those concerned.....it was not!
Today I stopped by CM Big Wing and not finding anyone who spoke English arranged a phone conversation with my wife and the sales manager.
It was soon determined I had been summoned to replace the two bolts on the left side of the engine per the description provided by a previous poster.
I insisted on watching the recall event though there was no one available to tell me the 'WHY' of the replacement of what turned out to be not two bolts but two cap/screws with a flat paddle type metal protrusion about an inch long that I assume fit into a female part. Prior to removing the original cap/screws the mechanic went to the right side of the engine and removed the round cap exposing the end of the crank shaft and rotated the crank to TDC. Returning to the left side he removed the existing two BOLTS? and replaced them with new ones. 15 minutes total time.
I looked at the removed parts and they looked very similar to the new parts. Is there someone out there that can tell me the 'WHY' of what's going on.
Frankly I doubt even the mechanics know WHY as Asians generally do what they are told by there superiors without question.
If there is someone who has found out 'WHY' please share your knowledge. My curiosity is killing me!!!

Moo Bann Banwangtan (http://banwangtan.com/index.html ) in Hang Dong 15 minutes South of Chiang Mai city center on #108 has three lakes with lots for sale.
Go to site, click pic of house upper left, click on map. I would not swim in the lakes nor would I swim in any private lake in Thailand.
There are some very high end houses currently under construction on the lakes.

Greenside is correct in all that he says, I have been using 3M Filtrete for 5 years on all four of my a/c's. The two rooms I use most often (bedroom and exercise room) I never open the windows and the door only to enter and leave. I run the a/c's 3 hours each day not only to cool the room but to filter the air. I know it works as I changed the filters this past Jan and in checking them this morning they are black with filth already. I will change them again today.
If I wanted a completely clean room I would have to tape all windows and rubber seal the door.
3M Filtrete now comes in rolls similar to aluminum foil and as Greenside says easy to cut and install. I restocked at Home Pro, Hang Dong in January.
From experience the filth in the air will remain with us until the next good rain..........The smoke is just there to remind us of the hazards.

Went in yesterday at 2 PM, #670 being served, I received # 671 and out in 10 minutes in spite of dealing with two newbie's w/o #'s. Place was jam packed standing room only, inside and out. Curly haired girl was friendly and efficient. Upon congratulating me for having perfectly completed paperwork I told her I had been doing this every three month's for 12 years and she suggested I apply for residency so I would no longer have to do it. I told her when she became Prime Minister I would consider it. Big smile !!

In the past I have used Lanna Labs on Mahidol highway. Walk in, tell them what you want, the phlebotomist will draw a blood sample, you pay 125 Baht per requested test (cost at that time) and you return the next day for results. Easy in/out good parking.
How to find Lanna Labs. Starting At the Ping river bridge going West towards Airport Plaza, go about 2 kilometers slowly looking left until you see a dome shaped building next to the highway, turn left just after. Stop, Look up and see the sign on the side of the bldg. LANNA LABS
I have used CM Ram lab since 2002 also and find their results very close. I am not sure Ram will test you if you do not have a Doctor on staff or have been a patient there with an existing file.

Yes a 10 kg fish (22 lbs in Americanese) depending on variety can drowned a diver who panics.
As a 30 year spear-fisherman (1962 - 1992) I've had many life threatening experiences.
Unless he was diving in more than 40' of water he was 'free diving' (no tanks).
He had his gun tied to his wrist on a short leash as he was after smaller fish. After spearing the fish he releases the gun and using both hands pulls the speared fish to him, grabs the spear, jams his thumb into the fishes mouth while threading a stringer through the gill plates and out the mouth. Then compressing the barbs on the spear head he threads it out of the fish and plays it out behind him, resets his spear and gun and continues hunting.
I think he shot a fish bigger than he was prepared for, got a good penetrating hit, the fish surged away jerking the gun out of his hand, pulling him along at speed causing his mask to rip off. He panicked and drowned.
FYI.......most spear-fisherman I've known eat everything they kill since they have a choice and it is very up close and personal much like hunting a deer with a knife.
RIP brother................

Sunshine Barbers - In old city, Soi 5 Ratchadamnoen Road - not far from the Wawee Coffee restaurant - female barber (Nat) who is excellent - more of a hair stylist than a straight barber, She is English speaking and mainly caters for farangs. Her prices are a bit higher (still only 150B for a cut!) but as someone else in this thread said - What you get is what you pay for. The price reflects the level of service.
There may be some in this forum who have wondered what happened to Nat. She was the barber in the new complex just inside Thapae Gate. She had 3 months break and has just reopened in the new location.

As of last Thursday Makro Hang Dong had a new supply of large bottle cases.....12 to a case.
Tesco Lotus Hang Dong road has single big bottles.........buy 12 and you have a case.
A tip on Pepsi Max............there is a BF (before) date on every can or bottle. If you are not going to consume the contents before that date do not buy it.
I have had them go flat exactly on that date.......

Thank you gentlemen for your suggestions. This Forum is 'the best'.
Global and Home Pro have residential book shelves which will work but very costly.
I'm off to MACRO and the NE corner of the moat today.

In the Chiang Mai vicinity has anyone seen metal home workshop shelving and pegboard for sale in a retail store.
The termites just had my wooden shelving for lunch and I've got a lot of stuff now on the floor.
The floor space is 8' X 10'.
I've been to the big box stores to no avail.
Thank you for your suggestions............JR

I also ride a hybrid, Trek 7200 for the past 6 years. Every Thursday 40 kilometers in two hours is my primary goal; cardiovascular exercise my mission. I ride mostly local roads in the Big C (Hang Dong Road) / San Patong / Lamphun triangle. This area is comprised of interconnecting paved roads with villages separated by vast rice paddies. I use a GPS to monitor my location and speed. I also do shorter rides during the week in the same area if I have an hour or so free. Customarily I ride alone.
PM me if you have similar interest and want to see the area.
