  1. Hi all, my non-o based on marriage is due as well and I have to travel to Savannakhet sometime next week. Would anyone recommend flying directly (BKK-ZVK)? Their timetable is everything but optimal for this kind of trip (plane arriving late, leaving early). I'm based in Bang Lamung and I'd like to 'in-out-done' in the shortest time possible. If anyone has any insights on this I'd appreciate any tips. Thanks!

  2. I would reckon all the usual ISP's are accessible in 'Pensioner's Row' but you need to be more specific.

'... have to get internet here in my building.' Does this mean you have a room on the Soi and want personal internet access? Or do you have a business on the Soi and want something for guest access? Are you using a smartphone, a laptop or a desktop computer? There's specific answers to specific needs.

LOL, I didn't know about the "Pensioner's Row". Getting there, getting there... wink.png

I moved into an apartment in a building here. They never had any kind of internet access. First step would be to gather all options available and then decide if the building owner wants to provide WiFi for the whole building and if not, I will have to get my own personal line. I have a few Mac's, iPhones and a HTPC.

I personally prefer True as I never had any issues with them in the past.

Getting a broadband line into the building shouldn't be an issue and all the current providers including True should have the area covered. However, how many floors/rooms does the property have? The easiest and cheapest option would be to offer wifi to guests and tenants but your landlord needs to trade-off the cost of the wifi hardware 'add-on' to the basic broadband. Will other guests/tenants use it? Many regular visitors rely on their own dongles and modems but would consider using a strong and reliable wifi service. Maybe roll out wifi in the public areas and/or one guest floor only and see how it goes? If the business gets a good name for having a decent, reliable and free wifi service, it may bring more tenants.

I cannot start at ballparking the costs involved much beyond what the published rates for a basic broadband line from the providers are. Costs for wifi routers and repeaters vary greatly on the quality of the products. I would recommend Cisco products if budget is not an issue with a very strong recommendation for TP-Link products as a lower cost alternative. My experience with D-Link products in Thailand has been less than stellar.

In the meantime, if the owner is taking his time and you don't need huge bandwidth, you should consider getting a data-only SIM and subscribe to True, AIS, DTAC or whatever. When I am traveling and the hosts wifi/internet is poor, I use my 799 baht/month unlimited 3G/EDGE/GPRS on my android phone and use wifi tethering on the smartphone to connect my laptop or tablet to the internet. Good enough for surfing and email but forget about big streams and torrenting.

Thank you all for your replies. I will steer to the next True shop then.

I currently use the iPhone tethering with a Truemove-H SIM to access the Internet. Works pretty well for one client, but that's about it then. All my switches/routers etc. are from Cisco, IMHO the most reliable network devices.

    Have a great day! thumbsup.gif
