  1. I did the 49 baht a day package and it seems to be for 24 hours rather than a calendar day.

It worked pretty well on my phone and was a mixture of "H" and "E" (the icons on the phone) throughout the day. Not sure which each means? What would 3G be?

I couldn't get tethering to work though. I managed to setup the wifi hotspot on the phone and connect to that hotspot with my laptop but could not load a web page or download email etc.

Then I tried USB tethering. The phone was charging and had the USB icon and the Kies Samsung phone management application said the phone was connected but I couldn't see how to use the phones internet connection.

I will do a bit of research and see if I can find out what is going wrong.

For 49 baht a day it is a great service for occasional use on the phone though!

I've since run out of credit so will have to top up. Is there a way to top up AIS credit pre-pay online or do I have to go to the shop?

    Thanks for all the help.

@bobi: I'm not familiar with mifi so will have a look into that. Thanks.

  2. Have you checked the Jet Set Citizen website? That has a guide to living in CM in $500 and places to stay etc?

Sending money out of Thailand via online banking is no problem, at least with Bangkok Bank.

Get your visa sorted before you come is my main advice.

I'm British, but I also 'think' predominantly in Dollars. Give me a price in Baht and in my head I have it in USD & TZS pretty much instantly Very rarely would I 'think' in pounds outside the UK - as a long term expat, I don't think I'm unusual in that respect?

Surely for us Brits it easier to convert THB to GBP? Simply double it and take of the last two zeros?

After four years I still convert everything in THB into GBP as soon as I see it, whether I want to or not!

  3. 60k for a school term x3 for the year = 180,000 baht (£3600) is still a lot less than you'd pay in Bangkok for a good school, it would be more like 400,000 - 500,000 a year which is £8-10,000. I guess that wouldn't get you much in the UK when thinking about a private school?

Overall, living in Bangkok is cheaper than living in a city in the UK, let alone London.

For 30,000 baht a month in Bangkok you can get a nice two bedroom apartment with swimming pool and gym. In the UK you wouldn't get much for £600 per month and nothing in London.

Things like child care and nannies, cleaners and maids are so cheap in Thailand you can't really afford not to have them. In the UK, a working couple would probably spend almost one salary on child care.

Thailand is cheaper for me because you can choose to live life on a budget and still do things like eat out, go to the cinema, etc. If you want to spend UK prices you can and can get just a good experience if not better for the same price.

100,000 baht / £2,000 a month in Thailand is perfectly adequate to live off of. However, in the UK you would have a much lower quality of life.

  4. I've just stumbled across the Yamaha AirWired devices which connect your Ipod etc to the receiver wirelessly (and losslessly) by using a dongle.

The most basic version seems to be the Yamaha PDX50GR which is just the dock and the speakers.

Is it about 4,000 baht on amazon.co.uk but I expect it would be tripple that in Thailand:

Has anyone seen a similar type device in the shops in Bangkok?

Ideally I'd like something I could also plug into my laptop (or any device with an audio out) and send the audio wirelessly to my amp.

Do they make such a thing?

    Thanks.

  5. I've got a Samsung Galaxy Y (the cheapest Galaxy) which runs Android.

I want to be able to get online with my laptop when out and about around Bangkok and perhaps other places like Hua Hin, Samui etc.

I gather an air card would allow me to do this but could I somehow connect my laptop to my phone and use that instead?

What sort of tariffs are there for getting online this way and who is a good provider for my needs? I wouldn't be downloading large files as have home internet.

I currently have a pre pay sim in my phone with AIS so could change to another provider if that would help me out.

    Any advice much appreciated.

    Thanks.

  6. Thanks, I just tried it, it is only for people who put in 200b with a 30 day validity.

Like banging my head on a brick wall, I think AIS will loose many customers with the greedy money mungrel mentality.

Dtac or True is looking good right now.

Sorry, what does this mean exactly?

You called 1175? They said you could not extend the validity?

I am pretty sure you can extend the validity of your own number by paying 3 baht per 20 days:

Dial *700 and press 3 to select “Validity Transfer” service

    • Enter the desired number of validity days for transfer.

    • 3 Baht is charged for service fee.

    Press 1 = 5 days

    Press 2 = 10 days

    Press 3 = 20 days

    Did you try this?

I tried this, got to the end and then it said "this service is temporarily unavailable, try again later" and it hung up on me!

I have about 500 baht credit on my AIS that I hardly ever use, because each time the credit expires I have to top up again to reactivate it.

What a con! Who should I switch to? Is there anyone that does a prepay service that includes 3g or wifi around Bangkok?

    Thanks.

  7. An amazon there are quite a few generic remote controls for taking a photo on the Nikon dslrs. They only cost a couple of hundred baht.

    http://www.amazon.com/Wireless-Remote-Control-Nikon-D5000/dp/B006JGXOSY/ref=sr_1_2?ie=UTF8&qid=1354603560&sr=8-2&keywords=remote+control+nikon+dslr

Can the same thing be purchased for the same price in Bangkok and if so where?

Or am I better off trying to get it sent from overseas?

    Thanks.

  8. "i have been seeing some signs for an english speaking wait staff downtown. if you have a work permit you could apply for these"

You get the work permit for a specific job. You don't get a work permit and then go looking for work. Besides, you wouldn't get a work permit for being a waiter.

I think the OP will have to turn to the internet:

  9. Pretty much every clothes store in Paragon and Central World at the moment. From GAP, to Topshop to Uni Qlo to HM. They've all got the winter collections in.

I'm not sure why they do this as its not that cold here at the moment.

North Face stores in most malls have some warm outdoor gear too.

  10. Sounds like setting this type of camp/retreat up could be a good business opportunity for someone.

I'd follow the advice of the poster who recommended going to stay at a basic resort not too near and tempting food outlets. If you do a bit of research you could find a personal trainer in the local area who will come and visit you for an hour a day or so, to get you into the habit of a good exercise routine.

Buy some exercise equipment to take with you like resistance bands, as they are light and easy to transport. Then you can workout where you are staying even it if doesn't have a gym.

Taking your laptop with you and getting a couple of exercise DVDs to watch on it is another option, if you don't want/find a personal trainer. I'm sure there are some on amazon.com that might fit your requirements.

I am jealous that you only need to work for one hour a day! If you've managed to setup up an income source like that, I'm sure losing the weight won't be a problem once you get started! Good luck with it!
