  1. There are still loads of bars with hookers where they don't act like that. Loads.

And it's still fun as they value customers. These are the bars that will survive.

Bars that p1ss off customers, won't. Simple innit?

Ever heard the saying it's easier to catch flies with honey than with vinegar?

Most of the smarter hookers (they are in the "service" industry) know that.

Loads ?? IMO there USED to be loads of nice bars where they didn`t push for drinks the moment you entered, but many of the most popular bars are not worth a visit anymore because of their constant drink pestering. An example is when you order a beer, after a few minutes(and sips) a bar girl usually arrives pulls the beer out of the condom and asks "One more?" followed by the question "Buy one drink for me?"

When this is repeated every 5 minutes it just get annoying and ruins what used to be a good and relaxing drinking athmosphere.I`ve been living the last 2,5 years in Pattaya and I have NEVER experienced the same there in the dozens of bars I`ve visited.

The owners of these bars on Bangla are the reason that they don't have customers. Watered down drinks, crap music, no food and annoying girls.

As time goes by we will continue to see the rise of decent quality restaurants, bars and clubs (where it is still easy to pickup decent women if that is what you want) whilst the lady bars continue their decline.

  2. Be prepared to ripped off for transport on Phuket. It's as simple as that.

You will not be "ripped off" You simply have to pay more then you would in other provinces. Nearly all taxi stands have set tariffs to most locations on the island printed on a board at their "rank", You either take it or leave it.

  3. So perservered with it and actually got a taxi.

From pahklok to patong sunday night around 830.pm.

Was pretty seemless to my surprise , 8 taxis availiable ( but this is due to the proximaty to airport as the app was showing them all near there ).

But non the less within 15 mins cab arrived.

    Down side ?

    Quote 400thb plus 30thb actual fare 600.

But then again never thought for a second it would be 430.

    Anyone else tried yet ?

    Aren't they metered cabs?

  4. Surin yesterday. No power from 10 am till 4 pm. Tesco had a truck generator in the street. Awful six hours. Now this morning off at 7.50 till 8.30. Must be more than a tree. What is going on?

PEA are doing maintenance work. All businesses were given a letter of warning in advance.

  5. You're also not meant to drive any vehicle with red plates between dusk to dawn.

    Or outside your province.

Many keep their red plates after the white one are issued so they can show off having a "new car / bike"

Or without the issuing book for registering the driving history.

Don't have to pay tax if you drive on the red plates.

"Red plates can now only be fitted to a car or bike for 3,000km or 1 Month (whichever comes first). Exceeding this, or any attempt to obscure the plate number and/or use of damaged plates that cannot be clearly read will attract a fine not exceding 2,000 Baht."

  6. Why do you want your water tested? drinking supply? Irrigation?

Have 30+years of collecting and analyzing water samples. The only analyses worth doing from that list are the microbiological ones. If it comes back uncontaminated try drinking it. Does it taste okay? Is it brownish (possible iron issue). Then the water is fine.

All the rest are totally irrelevant. Some of them don't even make sense (total quantity as a chemical test???).

And 2,000 Baht to collect the sample!!whistling.gif

Bear in mind that is a google translation as the original is in Thai and I'm not allowed to post Thai script. (I think)

That was also the small test. The big one includes:

    - Hardness

    - Steel

    - Lead

    - Fluoride

    - Mercury

    - Cadmium

    - Chromium

    - arsenic

    - Selenium

    - barium

    - Calcium

    - Potassium magnetosphere

    - Chloride

    - manganese

    - Nitrate

    - Nitrile

    - Copper

    - Zinc

    - sulfate

And the total cost is 14,300 thb

At least you would know you aren't drinking Arsenic

  7. So again i'll ask, muslims have issues with dogs?

    rijit

Traditionally, dogs have been seen as impure, and the Islamic legal tradition has developed several injunctions that warn Muslims against most contact with dogs.

  9. Duane, you're either trolling or have your panties in a bunch over nothing. Also, slightly arrogant/naive to go preaching political correctness to this bunch..........

OP, many restaurants closing now, serious downward trend due to the dependence on mass tourism (50% gone due to Russian ruble problem), and currency matters for the rest. Actual population of people here I've seen marked at around 350,000, not sure the restaurant business is a good venture at this point in time. Do your due diligence and if still wanting a go, open mid-November, iron out the crinks (not "chink" Duane, easy there buddy), and have good service and quality food full bore going into December. That'll start you out at peak season with your utmost chance at success. Best of luck, GOM

Grumpy, neither. I was simply pointing out that the word "chink" is every bit as offensive as the word "nigger" Somehow some people don't think it's harmful, it is.

My panties aren't in a bunch as it is Sunday and they're drying on the clothes line.

You know some political correctness is just plain good manners and respect, but some of it goes out of hand like the Christmas terminology.

The words I quoted are a serious lack of respect for race.

    Chink

    (chĭngk)

    n. Offensive Slang
Used as a disparaging term for a person of Chinese birth or descent.
    [Probably alteration of Chinese.]
  10. To add a 20K salary in the UK stretches very far when there are no school fees or the after school lessons.

20k you'll be living a life of poverty in the UK...lYou have lived in the Uk recently then.

You haven't lived in the UK recently then have you. Don't forget in the UK no hospital bills, no school fees. No expensive eating out. No dcoters or dentists ripping you off!!!

Take these 4 big hitters out of your monthly bill and 20K take home pay stretches a long way in the UK

    Example

    3 bedroom Bungalow = £700 per month

Brand New For Focus = £200 per month

    Utilities = £300 per month

My costs are down 50% in comparision to living a western style life in Thailand...

A 20k wage is 25% below the national average and 45% below the London average wage. After the UK government has extracted every single penny of tax possible from you to pay for your "free" hospitals and schools your take home pay would be £1391

Minus 3 bedroom Bungalow = £700 per month

Minus Brand New For Focus = £200 per month

Minus Utilities = £300 per month

Leaves you with £191 for fuel and food for the entire family. Think I'll give it a miss and stay here.

Gross Wage £20,000 Taxable Wage £9,400 Tax Paid £1,880 Tax Free Allowance £10,600 National Insurance £1,433 Take-home pay £16,687
  11. One in Cherntalay - near Laguna and 2 mins walk from the Villa Market there - called the "Hong Kong". Original name of course.

Maybe it plans to cater for the influx of Mainland Chinese tourists - who are coming in greater & greater numbers.

It is expensive, but it serves the usual Chinese food.

    I didn't know this one.

Is the food there mainly Cantonese, or Mandarin?

    Mainly Cantonese

  12. I think it's absolute BS that coastal and island resorts in the S/E Asian peninsular area promote their beaches as being clean and unpolluted.

No body should really believe this. The whole area has long been generally overfished while at the same time it's seas have also been used as a giant fluid waste(all kinds of) disposal system. There should be little doubt that this whole area in general would have to be one of the most polluted places on earth…, and it's obviously getting worse. Which local S/E Asian countries have or will do anything 'substantial or meaningful' to reverse this situation ? These nations are pushing 'it' uphill while their population is relatively unregulated. It's simply survival anyway they can for the masses…, and who can really blame the masses, they generally do not know of, or are not provided with any alternative than to take what they can from the ocean and throw back into the ocean that which they no longer have need for. Meanwhile larger, so-called developed countries farther to the south have long had environmental constraints which are paying off…, although they have their hands full controlling their waters…, but the point is, these countries are making some effective efforts.

Should Thailand be outperforming Britain in terms of this?

"Britain's 31,000-odd Combined Sewer Overflows, the legacy of an outdated system that made no distinction between sewage and storm-water, discharge both types through combined outfall pipes. This may stop sewage backing up into people's homes – but it also directs it, mixed with storm-water, into streams, rivers and eventually, the sea."

  13. Yes.

Obviously, "Peace and Happiness to the People" has not made it to every beach in Thailand. biggrin.png

    Has it made it anywhere?

It's made it into the PM's, and his cronies, pockets. biggrin.png

"Peace and Happiness to my Pockets"

Better stop now before we're arrested

  14. I know Cha-am beach very well. I've never ever seen a chair or umbrella on the beach in 19 years. The locals sit under the tree line and buy snacks and drinks from the carts along the roadside or shops just on the other side of the road. This 'report' makes no sense to me.

Sounds like your getting it confused with another beach.

    Yes.

Obviously, "Peace and Happiness to the People" has not made it to every beach in Thailand. biggrin.png

    Has it made it anywhere?

  15. No, they don't keep your passport. AFAIK you can normally travel abroad, no issues at all, but to be sure, check in the 'visa in Thailand' subforum.

I have always had the extension renewed after the 1 month waiting period BTW. I have always presumed this period was connected to the extension being based on marriage.

ok; but since "during the initial one month extension (visa under consideration)" , would you than need to obtain a single re entry permit so u can leave and come back?

This is all new for me as last time i had a wp was back in the 90's and times were a but different then LOL

    Thanks

In order to leave during the consideration period I was recommended to pay the express fee due to a backlog in Haad Yai (not Bangkok according to the officer). Not sure if you are allowed to travel during that period or not as in theory you don't have a visa.

  16. Non-B can not be extended, but her stay can be extended based on employment, and I presume that is what you mean.

It sounds like a first extension, so they'll probably want photos of her and her staff and of the company premises.

    Non-B renewal

  17. The immigration office is a disaster in terms of Non-B's

You'll most probably be told only three people in Haad Yai processing non-B extensions and your place of work must be visited by officer but he very busy and can take 2 months to process.

However you can pay 10,000 THB to get the express service and ready tomorrow.

I don't think I know anyone who has ever paid the actual correct visa fee for a non-B, it was better last year before our new overseers who promised to cut corruption.

  18. A foreigner setting up a Thai Company, for the purpose of purchasing real estate property, is crime in Thailand, isn't it? biggrin.png

Yes in theory if the sole purpose is only to buy to property

"Current regulations require that the company be an actively trading business with money flowing through the books, shareholders meetings must be held, minutes taken and yearly audits filed. Additionally the company must have a legitimate business purpose that is registered with the Business Registration Department."

  19. Pint Factory in Town got a huge selection!

Thanks for the menu, not many high quality beers IMO, so not worth a visit for me. Only the draft section looks good, although Stella Artois would not be my favourite for a lager.

I was so bored of Stella and Kronenburg when living in the UK....miss it a little bit now

Might pop by the Pint Factory to have a look

  20. BREAKING NEWS

In response to furious protest by parents to the increase in fees, the School has now sent a letter offering the following concessions:

It will now give a discount of 4% instead of the usual 2% if the fees are paid in full at the beginning of the academic year instead of paying before each term.

It says further: "The Board of Trustees wishes to 'reafirm' that it has adopted a not-for-profit status." !!!

No comment is needed except to say that not a single student in the School's entire history has made it to Oxbridge or Iyy league universities. Considering

the above response, it's not surprising!!

    -

Oxbridge and Ivyleague combined only account for 5 out of the top 10 universities in the world.
