  1. PIA preschool 315,000 vs BIS 310,000

    How is that more reasonable?

Not the money that counts here. BIS on two major roads with all the gasses from the exhausts going via wind into the school. No international sports teams or persons using their premises to train. PIA, international sports teams and individual stars use their training facillities. No roads with cars blowing poisonous exhaust fumes into the school grounds, no noise and cooling mountain winds. You want to save THB 5000.00 , you are a cheap skate. You obviously dont send your kids to a good school. Maybe youre a government school teacher?

BIS had been pointed out as being higher priced. Seeing as the OP is looking at Pre-school in this case BIS is actually cheaper.

I think it's also amusing that the Thanyapura facilities are thought of as PIA's. What facilities does PIA actually have? I think you'll find that BIS has far more and they actually are used by international stars and teams.

As a side note I don't teach and never have and don't have kids. If I were to have kids I would send them to BIS, given the far higher pupil numbers at BIS that is what most parents with the money would do here on the island despite what you might read on TV.

  2. I can't justify the price for BIS. It's beyond reason. PIA is a little cheaper but it's facilities are second to none.

I'm from a country where school is free so it's all expensive to me.

Prices of PIA and BIS are almost identical now.

Schooling is free in Thailand too but if you want the best you've gotta pay for it.

  3. To help make your choice BIS offer a complimentary playgroup for pre-school children 8.30am-10.30am every Thursday. You can visit and stay with your kid during that time to see if you think it is the right choice (of which I expect it will be).

  4. Most expensive local beer or import?

I've seen Guinness cans going for 550 baht.

As for local beer I think it's seduction nightclub. 180 baht for a singha. I'm sure there is worse in the lady bars. Suzie Wong's etc

Suzie Wongs always was one of the better priced places in Patong

Used to be 180thb for a JD and coke. Haven't been for 12 months.

  5. The King said there was no need to shut a few years back.It isnt Law.

Very true but it's out of respect and police seem to take that seriously. It's only one night so stock up if you get the dementia tremors.

It's one of the few days of the year that nearly everyone gets off at the same time that isn't a religious holiday. It would seem a good idea to celebrate the day by having a few beers.

  6. Should of left everything as it was...it's turned into a joke. I actually can't believe it. The army seizing umbrellas....why don't they go and fight ISIS...would be better use of their time than the fight against umbrellas.

  7. Members steelpulse, DrDave and iSabai have all put forward good reasons why there hasn't been any US navy ships here for a while. It's probably a combination of all of them.

iSabai - do you know if that is US policy?

I believe so, but I don't know how concrete or extensive it is. Going strictly from memory as I said. After Thaksin's removal, the US refused to send the ships here as a bit of a diplomatic slap on the wrist, and/or diplomatic nudge to encourage them to move towards free elections. Probably both.

Don't worry we've got an Indian warship here today. Looks like it holds about 6 people.

  8. I now expect many of the larger hotels, and some small foreign owned guest houses, and possibly, businesses other than accommodation, to have their hotel/business name printed on umbrellas, and then supply them to their guests/customers, probably with a deposit.

Free marketing/advertising, down on the beaches.

    Use the umbrella as signage.

A few places are doing this now but it isn't ideal for customers to be wondering around with their umbrella and deck chairs for the day (Plus optional picnic and beers etc).

  9. We had this exact conversation about a month ago.

There is a bus between many of the local beaches and the cost is 40thb....by changing at Phuket town all Beaches can be reached.

Yes it is quite slow and no i wouldn't use it.

"Yes it is quite slow and no i wouldn't use it." - so why pass it off as a viable alternative, when it clearly isn't????

Tourists want to travel the coast road, for the beaches by day, and the nightlife by night.

To go from Patong, to Kata, for example, to use this service, you have to go via Phuket Town - hardly a viable option for a tourists.

These buses are mainly for Thai staff, living in cheaper accommodation in Phuket Town, or the fringes, who have employment in tourism/hospitality.

I take your point they exist, but should hardly be used as an example of providing proper public transport in a self proclaimed "world class tourist destination." biggrin.png

Yes but you can use it to go Kata to Karon or Kamala to Surin...Naiharn to Rawai. Good for some routes and not for others. Same as public transport in most places.

I wouldn't use public transport in England let along in Phuket due to the cost and time it takes. I also did not try and pas it off as viable/not viable. I just state the facts and don't try and pretend that there isn't any public transport system in Phuket.

"I wouldn't use public transport in England" - I think the millions of commuters that use the London tube every year would disagree with you. smile.png

Seriously, Peterocket, do you honestly think the millions of tourists that visit Phuket every year, not to mention the locals and expats living here, believe the public transport between the beaches on the coast is acceptable, for a "world class tourist destination?"

"I just state the facts and don't try and pretend that there isn't any public transport system in Phuket." - I know these buses exist. I accept your point. I am simply stating they are not a viable transport option for tourists who wish to travel between the beaches by day, and the nightlife by night, namely, Patong. Therefore, they should be disregarded.

You are stating that it is indeed public transport, therefore, there is no public transport issue here. A very misleading statement, in my opinion.

Peterocket, did you know, you can fly from Phuket to London, via Sydney - Australia. Just because you can, does that make it a viable route to fly? cheesy.gif

    You stated "what transport system"

And then the transport system was explained to you again.

Whether it is suitable to everyones needs was not the question. It certainly should not be disregarded as a means of hopping between a lot of local beaches. You need to understand that many tourists look on this site before travelling to Phuket and may want real factual information.

I am unsure of why people who use the london tube system want to disagree with me about whether I would use the English public transport?

Schools will be closed on Thursday(13th) and Friday(14th) d/t the games, the Phuket government says its to ease traffic congestion!

School has been out Monday and Tuesday due to a Foot and mouth disease outbreak. Then the governor chose to close the schools to clean up the outbreak and make up the crowds at the games and alleviate traffic that schools cause.

    Sent from my LG-D858

Yep. One school day this week for my kid, due to the forced closure of schools for face of Phuket and the dreaded HFM disease.

Our little bloke was at school Monday to Wednesday this week.

    BIS didn't close
