  1. What about the pre-packaged orchids that they sell in the duty free shops in Suvarnabhumi? Are those off-limits for taking back to the US also? I planned to bring some home eventually, but I forgot that it might not be allowed.

I used to buy a box at the airport every time I went home to the US. More expensive probably but they always passed the ag check at O'Hare -- no bugs or parasites, etc. But last time (Dec 2009) the girl at the shop wouldn't sell them to me because she said they wouldn't be allowed in the US. So things have apparently changed.

  2. Hard to find any original CDs here unless it's Thai pop or something like Lady Gaga, Black Eyed Peas, etc. The only legit stand alone cd store left in Bangkok that I know of is in Paragon, third floor I think. You might try Rex on Petchburi across from Panthip. They have mostly copies but a limited no. of originals. More Bluegrass than straight Nashville stuff. Also the Central Dept. stores. Their selection varies from store to store. Central World probably has the biggest choice.

  3. Any idea when the sale ends/store closes?

I heard April 23rd is the last day. The whole shopping mall will be renovated. Mind you a lot of the shops are already closed. The plan is they will reopen again in six months. (Central Sofitel hotel will NOT close during this period.)

But yeah, plenty of bargains at the moment. Crowds too.

  4. The name is 'TS Southern Thai'; they recently moved due to the block they were in being demolished, but only 50 meters away inside the 'Coco Walk' Complex (Walk down the center aisle of Coco Walk and it is the 2nd or 3rd business on the left). Excellent food.

Thanks for that MickeyM! haven't had a decent kaeng som since I left Songkhla four years ago!

  5. I'm looking for some simple and inexpensive way to do this. Garage band says you just need an adaptor (1/4 in. to 1/8 in, as we would say in the states) and plug your guitar directly into the audio input/mic Have you done this? satisfied with the sound? Is this adaptor available everywhere in BKK? I've looked at Power Buy but they didn't have anything like this.

Others say the signal will be too weak and you need a preamp or possibly some other specialized hardware. If you do this, what do you use? Did you buy it in BKK? Where and for how much?

    Thanks

  6. the bourbon street in washington square normally has a live super bowl buffet, thats the only one i can remember

Should be a good place for Saints fans, eh? :)

  7. Steven Kalayanamit, CEO of Ice Planet (Thailand), said the company would splurge Bt180 million on the September opening of its ice-skating rink.

"We want to open the world's most exciting ice-skating rink at the complex with total retail space of 2,000 square metres, including a live-band entertainment venue," he said.

I just hope it's an olympic size rink not a stupid postage stamp like the one in Esplanade.

  8. There use to be a guitar shop in the "World Trade Centre" or "Central World", does anyone know the name of that shop, & if they sell guitar amps?

Maybe they have a web site?

Thanks for all the good advice & help guys.

There are three:Capital Music, Music Concept and Rock Planet. Music Concept is the Fender distributer -- amongst other brands. Rock Planet has a variety of brands, sizes and prices.

  9. This is my 6th Thanksgiving in Thailand. It was my first Turkey dinner. It was great, with all the trimmings. An American friend had some friends over to their home. I am sure his wife spent most of the day cooking. What a treat.

Lucky you! I tried Madrid's, but too crowded. Went around to Roadhouse, but their Thanksgiving meal was 'finished'. (Not even 6pm!) Thought about heading down Sukhumvit, but instead went to Beirut Restaurant and had a chicken shwarma and some hummus. Excellent!

  10. Agree, Capital Music has a good selection of Takamines. (Haven't played the Taks much but bought a Washburn acoustic from there which I'm happy with.)

Here is the Thailand distributer for Seagull:

    Thailand

    Theera Music Co., Ltd.

330 Verng Nakornkasem Soi 3, New Road, Sumpantawongse

    Bangkok 10100

    Thailand

    Tél: 662-2248821

    Fax: 662-2253132

    E-mail: [email protected]

    Music Solution Co., Ltd.

    496/13-15 Petchburi Road,

    Rachatavee

    Bangkok 10400 Thailand

    Tél : (02) 2089922

    Fax : (02) 2089522

the first shop is down in the bowels of China town in an area where there is a 'ghetto' of music shops. Many of the distributers are based down there and you see some models you seldom see in the 'upmarket' shops like Central World. Worth checking out if you don't mind the hassle of getting there.
