  1. Looks like the turtle's in love. smile.png

Seriously, tho, I guess the camera was remotely operated from the surface? Did you have communication with them? Did they say something like 'Er... there's a large turtle coming up behind you.' Or did they just let you discover it yourself?

  2. Because the holidays fall on the weekend, they are "observed" on week days. Maybe the government has decided to "observe" one of them on the Friday before instead.

The official holidays are 13 - 16; the 12th was added as an additional holiday. (According to the newspaper.) My company has the 17th as a holiday, so I assume we'll work on the 12th.

  3. In the '70's he used to have up to 4 pages in the Bangkok World - that was a Tabloid but it's still quite a presence.

Is he still around by the way?

    Patrick

He still writes book reviews for that newspaper on Mondays. Used to see him at the annual US Independence Day picnic but haven't seen him there in years.

  4. 2nd or 3rd floor of Pratunam. If you approach from the crossroads (near CentralWorld) head right along the outside edge to the 2nd entrance. When you walk in you turn right, head to the next set of escalators. On the 2nd or 3rd floor off these escalators you need to head to the front wall of the building. There is a double width shop here where they greatly care for their guitars. I've seen a few well loved classics in various states of repair in here....somebody obviously trusts them.

Draftvader, I can't picture what place you're talking about. Is the building on Petchburi or Ratchadamri? Or did you mean Panthip Plaza?

OP, Alicia guitar comes highly recommended. Check out this old thread for some other suggestions.

  5. NO- this is a real govmt. bus -thus the red ones are free or cost 6,50 bt/ride, but most are old-style AC-cost minimum of 10 bt now.

Plus that about another 12 routes serve the 2. f.e. 136, 138, 139, 3, 104, 517, 77 and more Thats why on the buses the BUSterminal is named as Mochit2.

About ANY part of bigcity BKK has a direct citybus to this Mochit2-only stupid farang think they have to use the BTS.

Actually, some of us farang prefer the BTS/MRT because it's cleaner, safer, faster and more comfortable than the city buses. But thanks for letting us know how you feel about us.

  6. To answer your question in the title -- Because the BTS depot at Mo Chit is built on the site of the former bus terminal, so the terminal had to move somewhere else. The current terminal site was the nearest plot of land available at the time (though the land is owned by SRT).

I believe the original idea was to have a combined BTS terminal, bus station, shopping mall where the BTS terminal building is now but for some reason (money ran out, conflicts between state agencies, whatever) it never happened.

  7. Last Friday I attended Rutnin to be evaluated for cataract surgery -- arriving at a very busy hospital I was processed and commenced moving through several tests and an interview with the Doctor. I arrived at 12 noon and the procedure was completed at 3.30 pm. I then had a second consultation with the doctor.

I had requested an appointment with Dr.Roy Chumdermpadetsuk and found him to be communicative and prepared to discuss all aspects of the surgery openly and clearly -- he speaks perfect English. Dr. Roy (as he is called) is obviously very knowledgeable and I am confident in putting myself in his hands.

After the final informative discussion about the options we decided that in my case a mono-focal lens would be the most suitable. The total cost for one eye shall be B55,000 -- B60,000.

I intend to have the procedure at the end of next month and shall advise.

This was nearly identical to my experience at Rutnin (though a different doctor). I had the surgery last March and am very pleased with the results and the follow up.

  8. Lots of music lovers on this thread lol!

Leelas, you really have no choice. What seems like a reasonable hour to you might not be to someone who works nights or has a sleeping baby. Get yourself to a practice studio. They're about 250 -300 baht an hour. Sure, it means you can't pick up your ax and play whenever you like, but guess what? You can't have everything. (Especially when living in a condo.) Be thankful you live in a city where practice rooms are cheap and available (and that you don't play a grand piano!)

  9. The only new potential catch for those US citizens who are and have been in compliance is how Thai banks are going to react to having to play "pitbull" for the IRS and start collecting and reporting US citizen ID and account info to the IRS. If Thai banks refuse, that's a serious issue. But, Citibank and BofA have branches in BKK, and I would assume that these Thai branches will comply. So it may mean us Yanks will need to move our accounts to one of these BKK branches of US banks.

This is my issue. Totally compliant with FBAR and 8938 but working for a Thai multinational company and my salary is deposited in a local bank. If Thai banks start closing American accounts because of the FATCA hassles -- and honestly, I can't say I'd blame them considering the huge expense it will take to please the IRS -- what happens then? I know I've mentioned this on other threads so please forgive me for being redundant -- but I have yet to hear anything about what Thai banks intend to do regarding FATCA. If anybody knows anything, please post.

  10. ^ Thanks.

I have the Platinum package, just trying to figure out if any others - other than the two people here who replied - are currently seeing ASN on any channel.

The press release is of course less than clear:...

"This channel will be available by following package

    Platinum package – on Truesport HD1 (122), TrueSport 3 (103) and ASN (113)

Gold package – on TrueSport 3 (103) can be upgrade the High definition channel by HD package

Gold lite package - ASN (113)"

Not sure what to infer from that? ASN is not currently on TrueSport HD1 (122), or TrueSport 3 (103), now anyway. I do not get channels 113 or 114.

Yes, those channel listings are not correct. It's only on 114 on my package, and NOT HD, but I thought I saw an announcement that said they were going to rearrange some channels in mid-July, so maybe the above is eventually what their going to offer. You never know with True.

Anyway, you should definitely be getting ASN with the platinum package. It might be worth giving them a call. I had a problem a few weeks ago when they were supposedly upgrading the software. I had to wait a long time on the phone but the person I spoke to had excellent English and helped me solve the problem.
