The immigration office is right next to the bridge too. That's where you do it.

No, it was not at the regular immigration office next to the bridge (that one was closed because it was on a Sunday) but in an immigration office in front of the bridge close to the border checkpoint.

I know the regular immigration office which is located on the right side outside the fenced border area, because I go there every 90 days for almost to decades.

  2. My favorite brand of cigarettes (Camel Yellow Compact) has been out of stock at our local Makro for more than a month. That's not unusual. Once a product is out of stock, it sometimes takes them ages to restock. But most other brands are also out of stock. Currently they have only 2 or 3 different brands.

So I went to the nearest 7-11. Surprisingly I faced the same problem there. Not only Camel Yellow were out of stock, but almost all other brands as well. They had only 3 or 4 different brands.

I suspect, this may be related to the tax hike last month, but why does it last so long?

Is this the case everywhere in Thailand at the moment or did I just happen to visit the wrong shops?

I have lived here for more than thirty years and have had no desire to shop at a Makro for at least twenty-five.  Shop somewhere else.

It depends a lot on where you live. Here in Mukdahan, there isn't much choice when it comes to Western products other than the Makro.

Of course, I can buy beer everywhere. But most stores carry relatively old beer, while at the Makro it is usually reasonably fresh.

I think this rumour comes from someone trying to buy between 2pm and 5pm

No, it comes from a person who has been living in Thailand for more than 20 years. He is well aware of the official selling hours and he pointed out that he tried to buy during these hours.

Because I haven't heard elsewhere about that, I suspect (hope), it may have happened because of some kind of misinterpretation by a local store manager.

so what happens if they removed or change the number of an item while the receipt has already printed?

Even in the 1990s I was already able to remove an item or adjust it's quantity on my record store's receipts, before the printing was completed. The printing started when I scanned the first item and was complete after the payment was made. During the whole process it was absolutely no problem to adjust anything on the receipt. So after I had received the payment, there were only 2 or 3 lines left to print.

That was in the 1990s in a medium size record store and it included full VAT receipts for those of my customers, who asked for such a receipt.

  6. I received a new 5 years driving license yesterday. This one doesn't carry my passport number anymore but the number of my pink Thai ID card instead. On the backside it carries a remark as follows (under "Restrictions"):

    "กรณีขับรถออกนอกพื้นที่ให้ใช้คู่กับหนังสื่ออนุญาตออกนอกพื้นที่ด้วย"

This is the translation, given by Google: "In the case of driving outside the area, use it together with the movie licensed outside the area", which doesn't make any sense. Can anybody clarify?

My guess is, that outside my home province  I must use it in combination with an ID document with photo ("picture" > "movie"), that is recognized outside the province as well (unlike the pink ID card, which - as far as I know - is only recognized as an ID document in the province where it was issued).   Am I right or does the remark mean something completely different?

Seems you weren't required to do the physical tests, i.e., breaking/reaction/peripheral vision tests etc?

That's right. I did not see anybody in the room, who had to do those tests before his or her license was issued.

My son told me, he had to do those tests a week ago, when he got his 2 years license renewed at the same DLT office. So it seems like sometimes it's required there and sometimes it's not.

  8. This is how it worked for me in Mukdahan:

I walked into the local DLT last friday without having an appointment. The room was almost empty (just one more customer). In order to renew my license for another 5 years, I presented the following documents:

    • my old driving license (which had expired only a few days ago) plus a copy (both sides)
    • my old passport (expired at the end of last year) plus copies of the passport page, the "permit to stay" stamp and the transfer stamps to my new passport
    • my new passport including the same copies as above
    • a copy of the translation of my old passport (just in case because the spelling of my name in Thai characters was different on my old driving license)
    • my pink Thai ID card plus a copy of both sides
    • my yellow house book plus a copy

The lady checked my documents, told me that I have to complete an online test before my application can be proceeded and gave me an instruction sheet in Thai language with a QR code on it. She strongly suggested to use my Thai ID number (pink ID card) in order to register instead of my passport number. She also mentioned 2 or 3 times, that the assistance of a Thai speaking person could be very helpful.

So I left the office, drove home and asked my son "to assist". He is familiar with the procedure because he went through it a week ago in order to renew his own license.  It did not take long before the "online test" (actually watching the movie and answering 3 questions) was completed and I had a printed certificate with my Thai ID number on it in my hands.

Yesterday I walked into the DLT office again without having an appointment. This time the place was much busier than last Friday (12 to 15 people in the waiting room). The officer accepted my documents (now including the  "online test" certificate), but was not interested in the copies of my new passport, of the translation of my old one and of the old driving license.

I had to sit down and wait for about 10 minutes, before the cashier called my name in order to collect 505 Baht for my new license. Than I had to go to the photo booth, where my picture was taken and my new driving license was printed. This one does not bear my passport number anymore but my Thai ID number instead (no worries anymore after a new passport with a new passport number will be issued). It is valid for almost another 6 years.

The whole process took less than 20 minutes.

told training videos are online but Thai only

Ask a Thai speaking family member or friend to assist (do the job for you). Once completed, you will see a certificate, which you can print out and should satisfy the DLT.
