  1. Like in many countries, one shouldn't only look at the degree obtained, but also at the name of the university where it was obtained and at the final score.

Degrees in Western Europe used to be pretty good and highly valued, but nowadays almost anyone is able to get some kind of bachelor degree, so we're going pretty much the same way as Thailand is going.

  2. You think pi=22/7 also? w00t.gif

no, its a simple approximation that saves memorizing a string of decimals. there is no exact value of pi.

22/7 is not used in the engineering world - and that is my point. So much for Thai degrees being much better than Western degrees, therefore.

There is an exact value of pi, FYI, and it has been calculated accordingly.

I certainly would not drive a car whose wheels have been designed and pressed using the assumption of pi=22/7.

They'd be totally out of round after a million cycles (and that's not a very long time at all).

Computers used in manufacturing now use way over 30 decimal places for pi, where tooling accuracies are concerned, and cutting is concerned, because up-to-date cutters themselves (reamers, boring tools etc.) are now manufactured using nano-accuracies, way beyond what 22/7 can give as an approximation to 5 dec. places.

Thus, the assumption chotthee made indicates the level of Thai degree awareness of what is real, and what is not! wink.png

    >>> There is an exact value of pi, FYI, and it has been calculated accordingly.

There is an exact value for Pi and it has never been calculated (as a decimal number), because it's impossible to calculate or even write down (as a decimal number).

But I agree that not using a calculator/computer in modern mathematics is not a sign of intelligence, it's an example of how conservationism leads to stupidity.

  3. คำในข้อใดมีสระ

In which option/answer does the word have a vowel?

    Compare with:

    คนในคันใดมีแว่น

In which car does the person have glasses?

    กระป๋องในข้อใดมีถั่ว.....

doesn't make sense: In which answer does the can have beans?

  4. Actually this as a good evolution.

An income of 2.4 times the income of somebody that finished highschool is still pretty high compared to most Western countries.

We've just talking about a bachelor degree here.

In my country somebody with a bachelor degree starts around 1.25 times the income of somebody with a highschool degree.

So, there still a lot of inequality between Thai people.

  5. There seems to be a school in the Trendy plaza building that has updated books but still uses the union method: Duke language school.

I went to Piammitr in the same building and their books are identical to the UTL books.

But if you can handle the pressure of Chula, it's the best choice.

  6. He probably found out that being a beggar in Thailand works much better than being a beggar in Germany. I think he made a personal choice. He probably doesn't want to go back and chances are high he'll be back.

If he really wanted help he would have accepted it the first time it was offered to him.

He could also have gone to the embassy himself.

Also, if his passport and money was stolen, he could asked the embassy to contact his family and they could have sent money to him via the embassy.

And he came on a one-way ticket ....

  7. Right, we all love Thailand.

Thai people just suffer just as much from the extortion, corruption, laziness and unprofessionalism from the Thai police.

Even worse than that! If the victims would be Thai the case would probably already be closed by now.

PS. I have several personal experience that go from robbery, theft, scamming to somebody dying (not a natural death) in a building we own. In all cases the police was extremely unprofessional. I am not saying these things unfounded.

  8. From what I have seen of the work of the Thai police in the last 6 years, there's no hope the real killers will ever be found. I am not saying this in a mood of Thailand bashing - I really love Thailand - but the police must be the most inefficient, unprofessional, lazy and corrupt organisation of the country. The problem with Thai police goes so far that they are doing more bad than good in Thai society.

  9. Well, if there's a credit card attached to the account (which will be debited at the end of the month) you could use the following trick:

borrow 400K from somebody for 1 day.

Open a deposit account and put the 400K on it.

Ask for a credit card attached to the account.

Redraw the 400K with your credit card and give it back to the person you borrowed it from.

Your account statement would now say 400K, right?

While in reality you don't have any money.

So, it's kinda understandable they don't want to give you such a statement - or do I see that wrong?

  10. 10 year old children are working everywhere in Thailand after school time.

They help their parents in their job or business. It's how things are done here.

    I don't think it's all bad.

The boy probably doesn't go to the finest quality school, so the knowledge he gets from working on the bus might be far more useful than what he gets from school.

At least he'll know how to take care of himself when he grows up, which is in the end is a more admirable thing than being highly educated but unemployed (like many Europeans are).

  11. Anxiety would mean it's all in my head, right? After such a long time, and because nothing else helps, I am prepared to believe anything. But I am not sure. Is anxiety related to stress? It could be possible that subconsciously I have some kind of stress because I sometimes miss home... I also had some family related problems, but those problem occurred more recently (6 months ago), after I already had the pain on my chest. Last time I went back to my home country to do the angiogram the problem temporarily disappeared (but it could be a coincidence). Or maybe it's a combination of a gastric problem with anxiety. If it's anxiety it would be the first problem I have with it. Can I somehow do something to take away the "anxiety", if that would be it? Can people with anxiety somehow recognize that they have it?

I've tried more pillows, it didn't seem to help. I will do further experiments with pillows.

The feeling in my arm goes together the feeling on my chest, but it's only there in 70% of the days. I never have only the feeling in my arm and not on my chest. If it was just the feeling in my arm I wouldn't be worried, because it causes no discomfort.

A thing that seems to make the chance on problems higher is eating dinner shortly before sleeping, but I am not 100% sure again.

  12. That's exactly what the other cardiologist I talked to said. He believes there's a problem with some nerve line. He asked if I ever got an accident. I did, but only my legg was seriously injured.

I have the habit to sleep with one or two arms much higher than my head (not beside my body), stretched out (like you raise your hand in a classroom), which might be causing the problem.... I really don't know.

The feeling that I get in the morning is like a pressure feeling. Like I sleep in a room with closed windows and not enough oxygen. I sweat when I get this feeling.

The feeling usually goes away when I get up. But lately I am also starting to feel some discomfort during daytime.

I can get the results of the stresstest but not of the angiogram.

The problem get's worse when I feel tired, when I worked long hours for a long time, or when I don't get enough sleep for a long time.

The problem seems to slightly improve when I do short and light exercise. Not sure.

I seldom feel extra pain when I exercise, but sometimes the pain is already there (even during daytime) which make exercising difficult/uncomfortable.

I am on overweight and this might be a factor in the problem, but my general condition is not very bad. I get an average score for my age group on the stress test (for maximum heart rate and time I manage to hold on).

    Thanks for that link Sheryl.

  13. When they did a gastroscopy they took tissue and I suspect they have analysed it.

I was never said to take antibiotics.

Antibiotics are about the only thing I haven't tried yet.

    I have tried pantoprazole.

    I have tried aspirin.

I have tried stopping to drink sour drinks and soft drinks.

I have tried cleaning the airco.

I have tried disinfecting the whole room

I have tried changing my sleeping position (using more pillows).

I have tried sleeping in another room.

I have had a stress test (just failed, ST depression between 1 and 2 mm).

I had an angiogram (was perfectly normal)

I had a gastroscopy (found a light irritation of the gullet, lowest grade). They took tissue to analyse in the lab.

I had a standard bloodtest : everything within the borders except HDL and uric acid (slightly outside the normal range)

I had an X-ray of my lungs (1 year ago). It looked normal.

I consulted my family doctor : he's sure it's not a heart problem. He thinks it's my gullet.

I have asked for the opinion of a second heart specialist (only talked) : he thinks it's not a heart problem.

I don't drink or smoke and am 42 years old.

I don't have any pressure or stress related to work.

After so many tests I am seriously beginning to doubt about myself. Still, I am pretty convinced that I wake up around 4AM with pain on my chest every morning (often combined with a numb feeling in one arm). Until 1 year ago I almost never went to a doctor. I don't get enough sleep because of this.

Would it be a stupid thing to try antibiotics ... it's the only thing I haven't tried yet?

I can predict what will happen when I go to the hart specialist: I will fail the stress test, and everything with start over again with no result in the end. But I am going to go anyway. The thing is - I don't want to pay for a second angiogram.

  14. I thought I had a problem with my heart, but they couldn't find anything on the angiogram (1 year ago).

They found a light irritation of my gullet on a gastroscopy, which made me feel like I have a heart problem (according to the doctor).

I wanted so go back to see a heart specialist because the medicine I took (pantoprazole) didn't help at all. I took it only 2 weeks.

The pain is already there for almost 1 year.

I planned to go back to a heart specialist but my family doctor, who has all medical files, said that I stopped taking pantoprazole much too early and that I should take it for 5 years.

The specialist that prescribed me the medicine never mentioned this.

My family doctor is 100% sure I don't have a heart problem (even though I failed the stress test).

So, I started to take pantoprazole again 2 months ago and have been taking 40mg every day.

I didn't notice the slightest improvement. It felt like I was taking sugar pills - no effect at all.

Now, the supply I took from my home country is empty and I wanted to buy more pantoprazole.

The medicine costs 700B for 14 pills, which is not cheap.

And it was not helping at all, even not after 2 months.

So, I decided to stop with it.

Now after 3 days I have to burp all day and I have a feeling of heartburn.

I never had this kind of problem before, so I guess it's related to stopping taking pantoprazole.

This feeling (heartburn) is different from the feeling that made me start taking the medicine (which felt - to me - like a heart problem).

I found omeprazole in a pharmacy, it's cheap and it's also a proton inhibitor.

Should I take that in stead (20mg per day)?

I don't trust my family doctor anymore and I've decided I'll go to see a heart specialist anyway.

  15. I think 95000B/piece is about the correct price (including import taxes, installation costs and central controller).

The price is not exceptionally high for this kind of product and you would pay about that price in Europe too (including installation).

The question is of course - does the government really need such an advanced conference system, taking into account there are so much more useful ways the money could be invested.

  16. If road safety needs to improve there needs to be a serious change in attitude.

The point to start with is the police, which is totally corrupt and lazy.

The fines are also much too low.

200B (the average official fine around here) is much less that the minimum daily income.

And usually you can get away with 50B, which is just a joke.

This new rule will have a marginal effect on road safety.

And the disadvantages are bigger than advantages.

For instance: it's likely that people with minor problems, like diabetes, will have a difficult time getting a drivers license.
