  1. Gen Prem Tinsulanonda is head of the privy council. He's probably the person that is closest to the king.

The Privy council is a group of advisers that are handpicked by the king himself.

The privy council is supposed to be politically neutral.

When a member of the privy council is appointed he makes the following oath:

"I, (name of the declarer), do solemnly declare that I will be loyal to His Majesty the King and will faithfully perform my duties in the interests of the country and of the people. I will also uphold and observe the Constitution of the Kingdom of Thailand in every respect."

  2. Thailand is improving. And there are some skilled IT engineers, but they are rare.

The IT infrastructure in Thailand is not bad and many people have access to some kind of computer and the internet.

So, in that way Thailand is improving and not doing too bad.

But if talking about IT we, farang, think about writing programs, developing large websites, developing data communication systems.

There's still very little development going on in Thailand and Thailand is far behind on the rest of the world.

Governments should invest in education rather than buying the hardware.

And more time should be invested in learning people how to program instead of just teaching how to use windows or certain programs.

Have you been anywhere outside of BKK you dill; try visiting a few villages and see what we have. No fixed line telephone, definitely no internet, a pathetic mobile coverage and running water two hours in the morning and evening and on top of that, continual power outages up to 6 hours plus any time day or night. This village is only 9 Km from the Bangkok - Chiang Mai highway and 15 Km to the centre of a provincial capital mid north Thailand. "Thailand is the hub of arrogance."

I didn't realize it's so bad there. He in Chonburi we've power outages and sometimes no running water, but the situation is not that bad as you describe.

Have you tried IPSTAR satellite internet access?

  4. A black cat was caught and locked into a box.
On the front of the box there's a sign saying: "black cat!"
    "Don't open the box!
    Don't ask any questions!
    Don't be curious!
You MUST believe that this is a black cat!"
Now, may I ask you, what color is the cat in the box?
It doesn't matter how the black cat is like, it's black for sure.
It doesn't matter how you would prove it, how people judge it, which question they ask - a black cat is black.
Therefore you surely don't need to be afraid when people judge, ask questions or when they are curious.

But if the black cat wouldn't be black,
then you would surely not let anyone open the box....
Whatever the story is, If you can't ask questions, if you're not allowed to judge yourself in a civilized way, you can most probably not really believe it.
  5. There are several European countries that have Lese Majeste Laws, but these laws are mostly considered as being outdated and you've to do something really extreme to go to jail or get fined. There's just no way any Western countries would send Thai political refugees back home based on the Lese Majeste laws. On the contrary it would a perfect reason to give those refugees permanent political asylum.

  6. I would like to know why some of the hotels I stay at in Thailand have such fast internet connections. How do they do it ?

And it comes free with the room.

One Hotel we stay at in Phetchabhun is unbelievable, you can download a 700 mb movie in minutes.

True via DOCSIS or FTTH offers very fast connections. It just depends on how much you pay.

  7. The negative remarks of the farangs you read here are the result of cynicism.

I think most expats living here for a while develop some form of cynicism -

probably because Thailand doesn't move in the direction they would like it to move and because of the new-reports that are mostly just delusional.

But that doesn't mean, that we all don't wish the best for Thailand.

  8. Space technology is very much an international thing, even European countries don't develop their own satellites and launch them completely by themselves.

The knowledge currently available in Thailand isn't even enough to build a small airplane.

Taking into account Thailand is isolating itself from the rest of the world,

I don't think anything like this will happen soon,

unless they buy a satellite from China and just put a Thai sticker on it.

Lately we read more and more delusional news reports probably only intended to support the Thai patriotism/nationalism.

  9. All internet communication can be monitored in Thailand. That includes, Line, Facebook and all the websites you've visited or commented on.

If you would get caught or not doing something illegal probably just depends on much noise you make and how they dislike you.

The main source of news for Thai people nowadays must be facebook - all the rest is heavily censored.
I think in no time facebook will be blocked on the number of people going to jail for 112 will seriously increase, which, in the end, I think, would be a very good thing ....

  10. What is the happiest news?

    1. News of His Majesty’s improved condition

    2. Power seizure by the National Council for Peace and Order

    3. Having Gen Prayut Chan-o-cha as prime minister.

    4. Ending of the protests by both sides of polarized politics.

I would also choose for the first option.

The other 3 points don't sound happy to me, they are either unhappy (2 and 3) or more like a relief (4).
