  1. I can understand why the NS bypass and AH1 north of Nakhon Sawan are in such disrepair.  For the last two days the NS road grader, roller, water truck and 2 dump trucks have been upgrading the dirt road in front of my house that goes about 1.5 kilometers further on through the corn and cane fields, the "road to nowhere"!  Normally they come through about twice a year with the grader and a few loads of dirt and that's it, but this year they hauled dirt for two days and built up and rolled the road, looks like a dirt racetrack.  But what they did was block all of the natural drainage which was normally across the road so when rainy season arrives there will be a lake on one side as they did not put in any drain pipes.  Can't wait to see the mess, but it's good for now!

  2. From where I live if I walked to pick up the Post at the newsstand, they would probably find me lying on the side of the road as it's 12 kilometers.  If I did make it, it wouldn't matter as they have no English newspapers.  If I want it I have to order it in advance.  The post office does deliver here about once a week but they still leave the mail at my wife's restaurant in the village which is now run by by niece and delivery from there is hit and miss, normally a miss as she is as hair-brained as I am forgetful.

But being forgetful isn't that bad as I never see any reruns on True Visions that everybody is complaining about and I never eat any leftovers!

  3. Ticks are very difficult to control, the first area to address is where the dog sleeps.  The ticks live and breeed in the bedding and it must be treated periodically to keep it clean.  Washing doesn't rid the bedding of the ticks and eggs.  I found that a good and safe treatment is Bayticol.  I mix it myself and use it as a spray.  It can also be used as a bath or a dip.

Frontline and Frontguard both contain fipronil and methoprene, Frontguard being much cheaper since it's made in China (100 baht/application vs 350 baht/application), but neither are repellents,.  The ticks actually have to get on the animal and bite before they are killed.  Most likely the shots that you are getting at the vet are ivermectin.  It's available and the shots are easy to give yourself under the skin on the back of the neck.  I never found any of the above very effective if you don't keep their bedding clean.  I have raised Golden Retrievers here in farm country and ticks are a real problem.

Don't forget, heart worm is also a blood parasite and is carried by mosquito and not ticks.  I found that ivernectin works well with these parasites but have never had much luck in controlling ticks or mites in doses that are safe of the dog. There are many other oral preventative measure available. Frontline/Frontguard does not protect the dog for this parasite.

  4. If you live in Bangkok, most of the septic tank overflows drain into a common drain and then into a canal somewhere.  Although it would be a circuitous and adventuresome route for the snake, he could enter through that overflow and up through the toilet.  I once had a Tokay Gecko sitting in my toilet ready to strike on whoever sat down, but he got in from the house.  I tried to catch the bugger the night before and lost him and was glad that I looked before I sat!!
