Surly calling it "OA" is the right terminology.

You have to be over 50 years og age, but you do not have to be retirerede.

It is possible to have your income from your home country, without retirement.

But you are "Retired in Thailand"  in the eyes of the Thais.

I.E. not working here, not earning income here, lounging on the beach here, year after year.

You quite clearly entered on a Non Imm O-A Visa.

That is clearly stated as the type of Visa.

Have you ever bothered to actually read it.

Nowhere does it state Retirement............that is a figment of your imagination.

I cannot understand those who continually criticise others who choose to use the correct terminology.

So please list all the reasons (other than Retirement) which satisfy the Reasons for the Thais to issue an OA Visa.

Australia is the only Thai Embassy website to my knowledge that refers to an O-A Visa as a Retirement Visa.

All other Embassy websites refer to the O-A Visa as a 'Long Stay Visa'

Well that's where I got several OA Retirement Visas.

    Thai Visas issued by Thais.

You as a Farang can call it what you like - won't impress the Thais.

Retirement Extensions is even painted on the window of the Phuket Immi office.

Being "over 50" is only one of many requirements.

Or the photo copy shop beside Immigration will sort it for a fee.....I used a agent in Soi Post Office, haggled the price to 18000, as the first one is a pain as getting the O Visa outside your home country is not officially allowed, after that I do the renewal's myself easy.....

    Really!?

It's perfectly legal to get a Non-Immi O visa at a neighbouring (to Thailand) Consulate or Embassy.

Thousands have done it for far cheaper than 18,000 baht.

Oh! Wow! And, this is what makes me mad. There is a law, it is abused openly, and no one does anything about it. Wow! No wonder we get kicked to the ground.

Has anyone ever broached this topic with higher ups, like the Minister of Immigration (if there is such a thing) or the PM? Do Expats in Thailand have any national advocacy group? If not, is there anyone interested? Of course, one could remove the law the next time around as a result, but when there are clear violations of laws, if expats had lawyers, an advocacy group to challenge some of the decisions, it could help. Of course, you would need to have someone with an immaculate record, an untouchable, as it were.

You'll die early if you can't adjust to the way Thais do things - this ain't Kansas Dorothy.

Besides just as the border Immi officers have the right to admit or refuse entry so do some Immi officers believe they have a similar right.

I don't like it sometimes but they will win in any case where the interpretation is up to them or their superiors.

They are going on the Thai Order, not its (sometimes ambiguous) translation.

  6. As posted above tell your brother to stop being so obdurate and start with a Non-Immi O Visa as the original gazetted Police Order requires.

He wont win this particular battle!

Not all Immi offices or Immi officers want to do the conversion from other than a Non-Immi O visa.

Also advise him to not to "shout the odds"!
