Given the traffic I've read here, I'm afraid the Smiths are too "recent" for most people posting. Morrissey and Marr were indeed one of the greatest songwriting/performing partnerships in rock.

I really liked them in the beginning, but, to me, the songwriting went down hill after Marr left. I didn't like them much after that.

Music being a very personal thing, to the individual one musician is a music hero while another is even despised.

I always loved Dylan ( along with untold millions ) and still play him, while I hated listening to Hendrix. I think it is because Dylan speaks to me on a personal level with his songs.

Unfortunately, Hendrix was so popular that it was hard not to hear him being played on the radio at that time.

I didn't like either one of them in the 60s, because I hated the way that they sang. However, Hendrix grew on me over time. His voice works with his music, but it took a while to realize it. Other than one or two songs, I only like covers of Dylan by better singers.

  3. I was an American living in Hanoi and I made no secret of it. The Vietnamese did not seem to bear a grudge as they understand soldiers have a duty to perform. They always told me that they have fought with so many different countries that they would hate everyone if they did not forgive. I really respected them for that.

  4. The smokey season has almost never bothered me much and a lot of other expats feel the same. However, there are a lot of others who are really made uncomfortable during those months. The only way to know how you will react is to experience it.

  5. I moved to Vietnam a ways back. I hated it and ran back to Thailand as quickly as I could. The people are just too aggressive after the mellow Thais. Also, learning the language was a real struggle as the Vietnamese are not very helpful about it. They are very critical.

On the other hand, very cheap beer and lots of choice. The foreign food was much cheaper and better than in Thailand, but LOS might have caught up by now.

  6. Woes? The man is kicking butts and taking names. Passing important bills, great new judges, crushing ISIS and faith in the economy is WAY up.

WASHINGTON, D.C. -- Americans' views of the U.S. economy were positive on balance in 2017, with Gallup's U.S. Economic Confidence Index averaging +6 for the year. This was a 16-point increase from -10 in 2016 and is the index's first positive annual average since Gallup began daily tracking of this measure in 2008.

Of course, if one has no choice but to rent or buy, it can still be rewarding but don't open your eyes while kissing her (if she lets you French kiss her, that is)

It's gotta be pretty soul-destroying to see a woman's eyes squeezed tightly shut in a grimace as she kisses you

Sounds like a personal problem. They won't go with you if that is how they feel. Some are very enthusiastic and some are not, but unless it is forced prostitution - not common in Thailand anymore - they will simply choose someone else.

Most of Dylan's stuff was poetic protest, not innovative music.

He struggled to play guitar and harmonica and had a lousy voice.

His stuff has given us some of the all time best cover versions, and I do not dismiss his talent.

    Try this:

The funny thing is that Hendrick's voice was almost as bad as Dylan's. Yet somehow, the music works.

To be honest I can't think of any singer or band where l can say l like all their stuff, perhaps Roy Orbison may be the exception..He has loads of stuff that folk have probably never heard, though l have heard the lot..:stoner:

The Beatles for me. I liked everything they did as a group other than a few experimental songs (Number Nine).

It is obvious from your responses that you see things in only black and white and will not admit any inaccuracies.  If you want to speak in generalities just speak in generalities.  Don't make up numbers and then say in generally they are correct.  I have given specific examples that show my experiences.

What you have given is anecodal and proves next to nothing. I avoided doing the same thing, because most people are aware of its many drawbacks.  socal.gif

    anecdotal

Something anecdotal has to do with anecdotes — little stories. Anecdotal evidence is based on hearsay rather than hard facts.

People like to share stories about things that happened to them, or that they heard about, to make a point. That kind of talk is anecdotal: based on small, personal accounts. Anecdotal stories are helpful when you’re trying to give an example of something, but there's a downside to anecdotal information: since it’s not based on facts, you never know if you can totally trust it. So it's best to go beyond the anecdotal and get more solid information.

I just thought of a sequel better than the previous sequel. The last Rambo film was actually well made and satisfactory if one like that sort of movie.

It really was good and shot near Chiang Mai. Stallone hung out in The Foxy Lady Go Go Bar and ate at the Duke's most of the time.

Good to see that you don't actually think rent is 10x.  Next time just state your opinion and don't make up numbers.

I said "SOMETHING LIKE"  10 times more and that is not far off. I did not make up any numbers. I gave a general idea and again, not far off. I get it that you want to pretend that living in Thailand costs as much as the USA, but that is ridiculous. giggle.gif

Could you provide a few examples?

How about a music article which states the obvious and gives a few examples - like you - of cases where is wasn't true.

What I would say however is that facilities in South Dakota (or similar) compare very well to San Francisco, whereas, comparing Bangkok to almost anywhere else in Thailand, that doesn’t quite work so well!

Yet one can get a cheap, comfortable room in Bangkok fairly easily that would cost far less than something in South Dakota that was not some kind of aberration. There really is no comparison.

Only rarely (Freddy Mercury from Queen) does the singer play an overwhelming role.

Don't agree with that at all - at least in the big leagues.  Usually the singer defines the band. The other musicians can often be replaced without too much of a problem if the songs are good, but if the singer quits, that is usually the end.

  16. "I am struggling to see how rent could be 10 times more expensive."

I came up with that amount off the top of my head, but rent is WAY more expensive and that is a fact. You can't find one room with an adjoining bathroom here very often, like you can in Thailand, so it is hard to make a direct comparison. If you did find one, it would probably in an unsafe location.  You can rent one room in someone's house with a bath down the hall, but they are usually quite expensive too. A private apartment is usually considerably more.

I am talking about California. Someplace like North Dakota is probably more reasonable. :saai:

How can you refuse to listen to The Dead? They wrote so many songs that make you feel glad to be alive.

Never got their music. I went to a few concerts when they headlined with Jefferson Airplane. After the Airplane was finished I'd wait for the Dead, but once they started playing I would inevitably walk out.

Luckily tickets weren't so expensive back then.
