When the last person buys all that is left is sellers!

  2. obviously a lot of "farang" have a lot to say! maybe it's time to remind you, you are merely guests in this beautiful country! these boatsmen live here and have to make a living somehow! what is the cost of the boat ride from patong, 100bht, 200bht???? as farang, you should be supporting local small businesses ... so pay you way to get to this beautiful beach ... or FO!

    Lunatic!

NO....Slipperhead....YOU are the lunatic. Although I do not agree with the "we are guests" BS....but the small business support is my way of a just world....go to Starbuck's much....do ya?

Nah I avoid the place as the coffee is crap and they overcharge.

  3. Wow.....most of the comments here are so small minded I wonder who the fools really are. Ya ya ya...boat mafia, ya ya ya...free to walk.

Has anyone caught the deep message here? Locals being squeezed because of the tourism boon. Fishing the seas was once lucrative, now they cannot because of the tourism. Education? Duh. Most governments give a sh*t about education, why do you expats blather about Thai education so much, when I'm sure most of you have very little anyway? It is called greed. And it is not the boat people's greed that started this. It was those who saw profit for tourism. Now, those once fishermen have to adjust and get their fair share of the pie.....SO QUIT YOU'RE EFFIN WHINING AND PAY THE MEASLY FAIR TO THE BEACH.

Far better to avoid Phuket altogether and avoid the scumbags who run the place.

  5. People come here on holiday and should expect some protection from scammers. The Beitish Embassy never do a thing except offer up pathetic excuses. If you hire a car you expect it to be insured don't you. Why not a jet ski, it is not so different.

Insurance was promised for these horrible machines but just another gob off by a corrupt and horrible scamming set of operators in Phuket and Pattaya for that matter. The police are involved heavily in this as everyone knows.

The Embassy says make sure it is insured - how exactly and why don't they start doing their bloody job and get off their asses.

  6. Suthep want the Shins out and the constitution provides for an interim government which I believe the Senate must appoint in early March.

He is hanging on until then and Yingluck is trying all she can to get the elections completed before she is out as caretaker.

If Suthep carries on after she is gone then his role will have changed.

The focus should be on who forms the interim government and the agenda that it sets. In the following months Yingluck will run away just like every rich person does when the threat of prison time looms, of that I am sure.

I hope they can find someone to lead that interim government with honour, good morals and evenhandedness. I also hope they get on with the job quickly and get properly administered elections completed.

There needs to be a cleaning out of bad politicians and ensure they can never again run for office. That includes all parties.

Utopia is but a dream, unfortunately until the education system has been improved and we get actual educated ministers, Thailand has to stick with the lesser evils.

Hmm, speaking of running away, Suthep hit the streets pretty quick after his land deal was discovered. He broke the law and the agreement he had with the poor yet he cried foul and ran out to the streets to gather his very own little pity party.

Do I think Yingluck is a bright PM? Not really, but whenever did Thailand have that? Like it or not, she was elected by the people.

Democrats screwed up and tried to make a pointless rebuttal to the international media as nobody is buying it.

Incompetence and corruption are existent in all the lower and higher branches of the political party tree here in Thailand. Thaksin used the transitional period to his advantage to better the lives for the poor, which the Democrats failed to do. Is he better than them? Doubtful, he just got there first.

So by disbanding one party because on the sole reason that it is the root of all evil, is extremely naive as you will just replace it with another just as corrupt. Let democracy have its way and instead push the government on educational reforms or vote them off or any until there is one who actually has the courage to do the necessary, no matter the cost.

Think I would rather replace a party that is openly grossly corrupt and have at least a chance however slim that the replacement might be less corrupt than just lie down an accept the same lot back in again. Otherwise I would on the whole agree with you

  8. Does anyone else see corruption and manipulation on display and not from the government?

    1. threat by its union: In the good old days of unions, organized crime and political parties used to have a stranglehold on some unions. The mafia and the teamster in the USA , the Labour party and the coal miners in the UK. Is the PDRC getting help from its friends/proxies at the "union"?

    2. rush to withdrawal money from the GSB: Has the PDRC and some of its media supporters encouraged and pushed the rush in an effort to cause panic?

Well you are right about the miners but I don't think the banking staff in Thailand are quite so militant. More like they are afraid for their jobs.

I think the PT and GSB were the people causing panic. It is astoundingly idiotic and naive for a bank to publicise it is hand out a highly legally questionable loan and highly politically charged loan of tens of billions of baht supported by a love letter from Kittirat.

Any apprentice banker would know circumspection is essential. But knowing that the inexperienced young CEO of the GSB is a protege of Thaksin since the tender age of 25 might indicate something and also show how PT are seeking to control everything from buying political parties (one of the the reasons the PPP was dissolved) to buying generals, police and constitutional court judges, allegedly and so I have read. Maybe a very good argument as to why such practices undermine the fabric of society.

    Nepotism is not democratic!

  9. Frustrated Thai voters should be entitled to vote. They are also entitled to politicians who act in the best interest of the people and the country. They are entitled to a vote where their vote counts and not one where it is swamped by votes bought by one or other people. Thais are entitled to many things and many things are not on offer.

  10. Two kids on a motorcycle drove into the front of my parked (parked legally) and ended up over the road - 10,000 or charged with driving recklessly and criminal harm (meaning possible deportation) - paid

Arrest warrant issued by court, police refused to arrest - arranged by off duty police for 7,000 baht. But taken to police at Bangsue who demanded 45,000 for complying with arrest warrant to take to court out of Bangkok or would release the person. Happened to know a bigger policeman but still cost me 13,000 as they had no budget to transport arrested prisoners.

Many times had to pay for papers needed at court from the admin office - ranges from 100 to 6000 baht depending what's needed and how urgently.

Immigration Bangkok demanded income verification although required capital in bank for 6 months - local immigration wrote a letter - no charge and I got the visa. Willingly gave 1,000 for their help but they really did not want to take it - I insisted because that was not a bribe and given after the event.

Many 100 and 200 baths to police for traffic infractions - usually I was wrong so just pay to avoid license pick up hassle

Accountant falsely made up sales invoices and was overstating VAT. VAT office accepted money due back but refused to pay it back or reduce it because 'foreigners lucky to do business here' - it never did get resolved

Girl threw bottle outside nightclub hit my hand broke my watch. She was arguing with someone close by. I was arrested and girl with the person she was arguing with accused me of hitting her - I was not even involved - police arrested me - had to pay 1,000 or be arrested for assault! I don't bother going out much anymore so can avoid that particular one.

Asked for 10,000 for no music license infraction at a restaurant I was momentarily involved with. Showed them license and asked for 1,000 because otherwise they would have problem with their superior - paid it as didn't need the attention and they did look very sad!

Dozens more but then I have been here a while. So it's just a cost of living - bit like the council tax!

  11. Maybe he had a lease and it was cancelled and then she sold the house - it only needs a copy passport and a forged Power of Attorney which nobody bothers to verify.

Maybe she used the method above to take his money out of his account.

Of course maybe not but the fact that it is that easy to steal property and money here seems to evade the conscious thoughts of most posters here.

I know because it happened to me!

  12. Very many Thai houses are not provided with grounding to the plug sockets. You might have three pin plugs but that does not guarantee grounding so just fitting a three pin plug to the machine will do nothing. Ground the machine one way or another. Many appliances will give shocks depending such as coffee machines and computers. Better quality products are double insulated and therefore you are less likely to get a shock but these products are the more expensive ones and usually dependent on power usage so things like irons and kettles are often double insulated and things like computers are not because their power consumption is much less.

Using a grounding rod is a great idea and not too expensive to install - it is just a pain doing that for just one appliance but unless you are going to get an electrician in to upgrade your entire installation - expensive and messy - your choices become a little limited - easier choices if you have kids though!

  13. Perhaps the International influence will just be lost in translation and dressed up to be a media persuasion tool by misrepresentation and implementation of whatever Yingluck wants from this. This is normal Thai culture lets not forget. One ting is said for 'looks' whilst quite the opposite is the action. It comes out of the mouths of just about everyone you meet so expect deceit everywhere.

Every day is a fancy dress day here where no one is what hey appear to be. Is this one of the wonders of Thailand?

  14. The fact is that different times have different laws - governments make laws for lots of reasons and not all of them are good. Depending the age you live in and the place in the world and the society and religion of the day will set the laws you are subject to.

These laws are not laws of the universe they are the rules of man. I do not think the drug laws are particularly good, useful or made for good reason however if you go somewhere you better be prepared to abide by the law. I wish the justice systems worldwide were fairer and more just - especially in Thailand.

So she did he wrong thing and will now be punished - harsh
