  1. Lucky enough I have a dream car here in Thailand: AUDI S5 Sportback, with ABT Tuning to 420 HP.

But I am just back from a week in cold Switzerland. So many great cars on the road there, all of which would be horribly expensive here. So what would I want to drive in Switzerland? Must have a lot of HP, and I mean a lot! (only more than enough is enough) and obviously 4-wheel drive (there is snow on the roads in Switzerland).

That narrows it down to a few. How about a Ferrari FF? OK, too show-off. Well, a Benz CLS 63 AMG with 4-wheel drive, but does that exist?

How about another AUDI ? Perhaps the RS5 or the S7 with this new engine they also put in the Bentley Continental?

Why not just a Bentley Continental? IMHO it's a great all-rounder... With Western prices, Western roads and Western traffic, I'd probably already have one.. violin.gif

RS5's are not that expensive in TH though - gray market ones can be had for around the 6M mark, but then again so can M3's, and so can much more practical cars (for TH) like the Cayenne - now there's a conundrum ;)

  2. Not to mention get some proper safety features denied to the local market like side airbags. I saw an imported yaris disel 1.4 that came with all the airbags youd expect outside of thailand....critical to minimize some of the disadvantage compacts have in wrecks.

If safety is a primary concern, there's a new variant of the Fiesta launching later this month with the full compliment of airbags (7 of them), stability control and traction control, making it the first 5-star car in the sub-1M range (the next least expensive 5-star cars are the Ford Ranger Wildtrak, The Mazda3 and the soon to be released Ford Focus).

  3. I am looking to buy a base Brio (400k baht) when they start production again. Has anyone managed to buy a base Brio yet, i heard maybe they were not yet in production.

The base MT versions of these eco-cars has never been produced in quantity, so will always have a reasonably long wait associated... That's not just a Honda thing, it's industry-wide.

The fact is virtually no-one actually buys them, and definitely no-one wants to sell them (who wants a car that doesn't even have a radio? heh). They only exist to qualify for the eco-car tax break, which requires that the range must include a version that sells for < 400K Baht.

See how you go, but also don't forget there's some more eco-car options coming later this month too - i.e the Mitsubishi Mirage and the new-generation Suzuki Swift - the latter of which is competitve against Jazz, Yaris, Mazda2 and Fiesta on product size and substance...

  4. My (Thai) wife bought a new car for cash on 29 September 2011 and got Red Plates with Brown Book. Paid deposit of 2500 with receipt refundable on return of red plates.Initial insurance cover (minimum as required by law) was issued at vehicle collection and the annual policy (First Class) a few weeks later.

Despite numerous 'phone calls to the selling agent (in Bangok) she is still waiting for the white plates with the excuse (last three times) that they (the agent) have the new white plates but are still waiting for the Tabien Roht!

I have told her that you can't have one without the other but, am I correct?

It is my understanding that it is the agent's responsibility to do the initial registration.

You are correct - white plates are issued with the tabien rot (registration book) - impossible they can be issued beforehand, and they're never issued more than a few minutes after....

Sounds like a line to me....

  5. My wife did a bit of research on Thairung vehicles, and she came across 2 or 3 reviews that say thairung vehicles are assembled poorly and as a result start to squeak after a few years. I'm not if i should worry.

Anyways, we called Thairung and according to the main office there are less than 10 allroaders left for sale. They offered a decent deal so considering it. Will negotiate more...

    How much is the MU7?

Does anyone know the price range for the Trailblazer?

Yes, only 10 left because there's a new generation launching very soon.

MU-7 starts at 1.013M for the base model MT, up to 1.32M for the top model.

No pricing for Trailblazer until it's official launch in 19 days time, but I would expect the base model 5MT 2.5L version (as hinted by Chevy, not confrmed) to kick off around the 1M mark so it can compete against the diesel Pajero Sport and Mysterious Utility 7..

  6. The S60 T5 was sold in TH for some time, but has now been discontinued in Thailand in favor of the T4F (1.6L turbo 180HP).

However even when it was sold here it was in detuned form so as to slip under the 220HP excise tax limit (exceeding 220HP nets you a cool 111% tax) - and even then it was 2.99M Baht...

Unfortunately, there's practically zero chance we'll see them return to Thai shores, unless the excise tax system receives a major overhaul (unlikely).

  7. And some more local ones...

Hyundai have announced that they will be releasing an updated version of the H1 van later this month, with improved power output for AT versions, and improved FE for the base MT version.

Mitsubishi have revealed that the Mirage eco car, launching later this month, will be initially launching with 3 different variants, priced from 380K to 550K.

Mitsubishi have signed an MOU with the Natural Energy Development commission to expore the feasability of electric vehicles in TH. Under the agreement, Mitsu will be supplying a number of their i-Miev's for testing and research purposes.

Ford have announced that they wil be releasing a new 'Sport Ultimate' version of the Fiesta at this month's Motor Show. This new range-topper adds a full compliment of 7 airbags the the existing top model 'Sport' (making it the only 5-star rated car in TH under 1M Baht), and will be priced at 759K.

Volvo have confirmed that they will be releasing a "Drive" version of the V60 Wagon at this month's motor show. With the tax benefits of an E85 1.6L turbo gasoline engine, pricing starts from just 2.249M Baht.

Chevrolet Thailand have confirmed that the new Trailblazer SUV (Colorado based PPV) will be launching on March 21st.

Toyota TH have announced a plan to spend a further 6 Billion Baht to expand production capacity at their engine plant for ZR series engines from 100K units to 840K units/year by 2014.

  8. He seemed to be about the 2nd most knowledgeable guy on the car forum. Of course, his weird bragging and schizo running around putting deposits on all sorts of new cars was weird, but this?

Haha - you've thrown a spanner into the works here with who's the most knowledgeable then? MRO? TA? maybe even WS?

    Surely you jest.

Woodsie888 is a Thai motoring encyclopedia, he just keeps the good stuff to himself wink.png

  9. Did they build them both for a while? I know they marketed the Trooper in the US for a while

In Thailand, production of the Trooper ended in Q3 2004 when the MU-7 production began. There were still Troopers in showrooms up until around mid-2005 though, so both were on the floor together for a short while....

  10. basicly a cheap isuzu mu7

if the specs suits you, its fine

and i would rather get this than freed or innova

but what you really need to do is to stand up as a man, and get a 799k baht ranger and a pink fino for wify

A couple years back was looking for a new Isuzu Jackaroo/Trooper and all searches came up with the Thai Rung as the replacement .....seemed a bit too SUV rather than a the more truckie Jackaroo.

    The Trooper's actual replacement is the MU-7... Both were/are pickup-based SUV's

  11. Personally I would like a 4DR 3.2 XLT 4WD 6AT with all the extras of a Wildtrack but without the extra body kit and roll bars etc.. I think the XLT looks better.

    Rumor is 4DR 3.2 XLT 4WD 6AT will be available for 999,000

Where did you get this rumor as I just spent over 2 hour with Ford dealer today and 3.2 is not even in the works for thailand! Plant in Rayong says no AT, 4dr 4X4's have been delivered anywhere, just the MT!!

3.2L definitely *is* in the works - Ford have publicly promoted the 3.2L Wildtrak, they just haven't yet supplied official pricing for it...

According to my sources, there will be a 3.2L XLT later in the year, but my sources are suggesting it'll give you a reasonable amount of change out of 1M Baht - i.e. mid 950's, give or take...

  12. I almost bought my wife a mini

The mini in Thailand is for the super rich.

Most Thai settle for the look alike. The Suzuki Swift.

Soon, it's going to be a much easier decision too..

Next month Suzuki will be releasing a 1.2L CVT version of the Swift under the Thai eco-car program. The MT version will be just under 400K (but don't expect much availability in MT though), there will also be 2 CVT models under 500K (GA and GL grade), and a range-topping CVT (GLS) in the mid-500K range...

you're quoting prices for 2X4 versions, the ones we were talking about were the 2.2,AT, 4dr, 4X4, and its hard to find an AT in 4X4 less then a million Baht!!!

Hehehe, no I'm not - all the above are 4x4 ;)

  15. Cool :)

I'll add a few local ones too..

The Suzuki eco-car project has been confirmed to be a current-gen Swift with a smaller 1.3L engine and the March's CVT. Looks well set to raise the bar in the eco car segment.

The next-gen Nissan Teana is in the final stages of development and is expected to enter tooling later in the year. Watch the roads for some test mules coming your way soon ;)

Nissan have revealed teasers of the "Hi-Cross" concept, which provides clues as to the styling direction of next-gen X-Trail.

Chevy Thailand are beating their chests for being the most successful USA brand on sale in TH during 2011 (which is a bit like celebrating coming 2nd last, rather than last ;) )

Toyota TH have announced a 'last minor change' for the Yaris, using some Vitz RS styling parts from the old JDM version - further delaying the release of the next-gen model.
