  1. This isn't the one you were to buy is it? If so, what happened?

At any rate, can you relist its specs and price?

Again i don't work for Ford...I just bought mine last week. Been giving out my contact to a few dealers in the country and now a few called... I guess many either ditch the order or could not get finance.

By the way, the truck is brandnew and spec and price are same as Ford website.

Here is the spec (copied from Ford website)

  2. What is Synthetic?

Did miniral stock got synthesized call Synthetic?

Group base III, III+ still miniral base which most of product marketed in Thailand is in this category.

Why don't you try import ester base, like Red Line Oil is make and packaging in Benecia, CA. and ship to Thai distributor ready for sell. Non repacking, rebottling, what you would get from US is what sell in Thailand.

google "Red Line Oil" and pin point location to Thailand you will find place to buy.

Are you saying that Red Line Synthetic oil (which has a good reputation) is derived from a different base than from, say, Mobil 1 Synthetic?

Are not the synthetic Mobil 1, Castroil, etc. oils sold in LOS the exact same chemical compositions as their USA based versions?

The Thai 'repacking, rebottling' process, in itself, doesn't change the composition of the synthetic oil does it - or does it?

  3. Saw this Zulex center console for the Ranger at the motor Expo in Bangkok.

Very nice 8" screen and GPS included, a bit tired of having my old Garmin 205W fitted on the front shield and charging cable all over the place.

Anybody here having this and if yes, how is it?

    http://www.zulex.co.th/products/product_detail/850

I've got one, which I also had installed to replace a Garmin Nuvi 205W. Bit of a learning curve on the GPS but I am getting up to speed with it now. The 8" display is obviously much better. The other advantages, if you need them, are the ability to play music videos and movies etc. There is an optional attachment called an MM Box (Multi media) which allows your phone's screen to be mirrored on the display. This is not particularly useful and will not work with dual sim phones. There are probably other phones as well but I have only been able to test it with about 6 different models.

The unit comes with a reversing camera but I opted to keep the Ford one with the display in the rear view mirror and mounted the new one facing forward.

    Nice after market add-on! thumbsup.gif

  4. Australian reviews suggest that the Mazda corners better than the Ford but is jittery on less than smooth roads. As a Mazda 3.2 owner I would agree that it handles well but the ride can be quite firm.

So you classify your 3.2 Mazda's ride as can be quite firm.

If I wanted a less firm ride, wouldn't an upgrade of shock absorbers and 'smoother' riding tires go a long way to make the Mazda ride less firm or is there something more involved?

I am also curious as to why there is such a huge demand for Ford's 3.2L and not for the similarly(?) equipped Mazda 3.2L?

  5. Yeah... but you will still be only driving a Mazda.

And what would be the difference? Is the same car, and my Mazda smiles smile.png

^^ Good question for those of us who don't know!

Besides the obvious interior and exterior cosmetic appearance differences, the 7,000 THB for 'white' and Ford's comparatively fewer number of nation-wide dealers, are there any other basic differences between the Ford and Mazda versions of their 3.2L models, and, are there any differences between the Ford and Mazda versions of their 2.2L models distinct enough to give buyers reason to choose one brand over the other?

Ford has Model T heritage years back. Mazda is just one Japanese brand which I believe they are great at their 2 seater car and rotary engine.

Oh no, I'm not going there ........ whistling.gif

What I am asking about, (and probably should have stated more precisely): Are there any notable differences between Ford and Mazda 3.2L versions of their pickup truck models and also are there any differences between the two versions of their 2.2L pickup truck models?

Are there any consistent reports of recurring transmission problems that point to a common defect?

  6. Another cool Mazda biggrin.png

Funny thing, Mazda gives 7000B discount for the white ones (only), Ford doesn't...

Yeah... but you will still be only driving a Mazda.

  7. Thanks for reassuring on economy. Not sure why those diesel trucks in US and Canada cannot provide as much fuel economy as local Thailand truck. For smaller truck, only gasoline engine is available...may be the company trying to sell larger displacement engine only with diesel.

Will pickup my white 3.2 this afternoon somewhere in Nonthaburi.

These little 3.xL diesel engines wouldn't sell comparably well in SUVs or pickups in the USA where the culture is, 'bigger and mo' power' - 6.0L diesels rule.

For those living in more rural settings, do you know whether Ford vehicles can also be provided warranty service at Mazda dealerships?

I went to my local (Udon) Mazda dealer to ask how much to service my 2 year old Ranger. They said they would feel unhappy to do the service as it would invalidate my warranty. I said that Fords are supposed to have a worldwide warranty and that it's not necessary to get servicing done at Ford, but they insisted that Ford Thailand would use it to get out of any warranty claims.

Ford Thailand told me if my new engine was not fitted by an Authorized Ford Dealership they would void any remaining warranty on the vehicle.

Though it totally makes sense from a strict business perspective, a joint 'venture' would probably benefit Ford (with its fewer nation wide service centers) more so than Mazda which is more 'established'.

  8. I've been driving my 3.2 l for this past week and it is a very good truck. 2200 baht in diesel will give you 800 kms highway / city driving. My previous Dodge Dakota in Canada was a very good truck as well but nowhere near the same economy.

I never discussed anything with the dealer and it came with floor mats, tinting and trim package so maybe its standard. For 1.1 million baht, its one of the better values out there. No more dealing with Hertz or Avis, just so nice to go anywhere anytime I want.

I purchased the new engine for my Ranger through our Mazda dealership in BKK and that caused a massive amount of paperwork issues.

    Good! clap2.gif

It's good to hear you are moving on getting your truck back on the road! thumbsup.gif

With Mazda and Ford in a quasi-partnership(?) and sharing the same engines and chassis, I was wondering if they went the next step and allowed vehicles (with their partner's name plate) to be provided warranty service at their dealerships?

Do you know if this is practiced?

  10. I live in a little Village out in the sticks, within the last 7 days 2x Toyota Fortuners vanished and now a new MU-X sits in there drives.. Toyota drivers jumping ship ?

    Yup!

Until we see what the new Everest will be like, it looks as though the 2 new 'kids' on the block - the MU-X and the Chevy Trailblazer - could be giving, (if not outright overtaking), the Pajero Sport a proverbial 'run' for its leader status!

  11. Commercial vehicles and PPV's are taxed much lower than passenger cars, and gasoline in all forms has additional levies imposed to help offset diesel subsidies. They tried abandoning diesel subsidies once, and the cost of living practically doubled overnight (and didn't go back down once the subsidy returned).

While subsidies are never a great long term strategy, the fact is that diesel prices effect the price of practically everything in Thailand, and until average wealth raises more, it's not a good idea at all to let inflation run wild (i.e. remove the subsidy).

    ------------------------------------------------------

    Source:

Gasoline and diesel were subsidized for many months in 2004. Diesel was subsidized in 11 out of 12 months in 2004, and diesel, but not gasoline, continued to be subsidized by the fund in 2005 until Aug. Diesel was again subsidized in 2008, in Jun 2009, in the first four months of 2011 leading up to a closely contested national election in July 2011, and again in Aug and Sep 2012.

In addition, the oil fund levy was eliminated for both gasoline and diesel in the last four months of 2011. By Apr 2011, the oil fund reserves had been depleted. Aside from periodic subsidization of gasoline and diesel, the oil fund has been used mainly to subsidize bioethanol and biodiesel in recent years. The Oil Fund had a deficit of 22 billion baht (US$0.7 billion) in Jun 2012. In 2011, the issue at hand was how long government could prevent the diesel price from rising above 30 baht (US$1)/liter. Monthly average prices of diesel in Bangkok and monthly average benchmark FOB prices relevant to Thailand since 2007 are shown below. The plot illustrates government’s attempts to keep the retail price at or below 30 baht/liter.

Tax reductions: In Apr 2011, the cabinet approved a cut in the excise tax for diesel from 5.31 baht (US$0.18)/liter to 0.005 baht (US$0.0002) effective from Apr 21 until Sep 30 to keep diesel price at or below 30 baht (slightly less than US$1)/liter, a move widely criticized for being political even by the Federation of Thai Industries.

A tax reduction of Diesel is not uncommon as it is an instrument to influence the economic development.

An excellent statement of the facts! coffee1.gifthumbsup.gifclap2.gif

  12. The 10 l rule only applies for 95 octane which is sold at 1.90 RM (19 baht). You can buy as much 97 octane as you want. I think the rule is only strictly enforced close to the Thai border to prevent smuggling.

Where do I have my info from? It is posted at the gasoline pumps.

Never seen it, but the boss does say to use only 97 in the loan car he provides wink.png

I'm curious; What is the Thai equivalent of 95 and 97 octane?

Is one of these the Thai equivalent of benzine 95?

  13. If you are referring to the BP posted article posted today, The 'exact' phrase as I read it, stated, ".....if the caretaker government fails to seek cabinet approval for the extension of the fuel's excise tax subsidy ...."

All this means is that the current subsidy is 'due' to legally expire and needs to be extended with cabinet approval - period.

This is akin to it being said, "That thousands of foreigners are due to be expelled from LOS within a year". Though technically true, because foreigners visas are normally due to expire - 1 year, 3mo, etc., at which time the govt could very well choose not to renew them, but the reality is .....!

The same thing applies to the way the OP titled this thread. It's unnecessarily alarmist at the very least - if it is the same BP article I read today.

  14. I have both Petrol and Diesel pickups/SUV's. I have also converted Diesel to Diesel + LPG and Petrol to LPG. I have also fitted an add-on Common Rail performance box on a diesel and here are my comments.

Petrol 2.4 Mitsubishi Pajero Sport, cost per km 4.8 baht. After conversion to LPG 1.84 baht/km. Performance difference almost negligible, slightly slower at high rpm (it's like a slug anyway). My advice, this is a must do conversion.

Toyota Vigo 4x4 Auto 3.0 Diesel, cost per km 3.2 baht. After conversion to LPG + Diesel 2.7 baht/km BUT the engine which is not very quiet by modern standards becomes a lot noisier, also bhp and torque is increased by about 50%. It would spin the back wheels on dry tarmac when you kickdown at 40km/hr. My advice... don't convert it, it's too noisy.

Ford Ranger Wildtrak 3.2 Diesel Auto 4x4. In standard guise has 400NM torque and 200 bhp. Adding a 3,000 baht chip-up box to the common rail transforms the pickup. Fuel consumption is down 10%, torque is up 25% and bhp up 20%. These boxes are usually adjustable. I tuned mine for a much higher increase in torque, probably up 25%, I am guessing but maybe 500NM and probably less than the standard 200bhp. In fact there is no point revving it any higher than 3,500 rpm, it flies from tickover and I am using 15% less fuel. Cost per km 2.6 baht. It takes a bit of getting used to avoiding kickdown, the change-ups on full throttle (without kickdown) are about 3,500 rpm anyway. Again, this is a must-do conversion, it's like driving a 4.5 litre diesel and a joy to drive.

There is no comparison between the Vigo 3.0 diesel engine and the Ford 3.2 Diesel. The Toyota drives likes it was designed 20 years earlier.

Very, very interesting and informative! clap2.gifthumbsup.gif

So, are you saying that the Vigo 3.0 diesel engine, (with its older [aged?] design, like fine wine), drives 'better'? laugh.pngcheesy.gifcheesy.gif

  15. Just picked it up this afternoon after a 9 month wait. 3.2 litre diesel. Backup camera, bluetooth, all power options. Drove 200 kms and very happy with it.

Drove over one of those small plastic stools at a restaurant accidentally that was left too far out on the road and a real nice snapping crunch sound. Made my day.smile.png

Whats also nice is that the ride height is higher so you can see over the traffic and avoid the selfish guys blocking traffic because they are doing u-turns from the centre lane.

    Nice, real nice! clap2.gif

That's what I'm talking about! thumbsup.gif These trucks just look good, IMHO - of course.

If Ford would just cleanup it's after service rep and expand its dealer service centers nationwide, this model (and the upcoming Everest) could very well be runaway class leaders!

It's good to hear your Ford success story!

  16. Shameful if true, but getting more and more believable with all the posts we've seen here lately.

What would be the best English term to describe this type of practice? ransom? blackmail? something else?

In the UK a car in short supply is worth a 'premium'

    USA 'over sticker'

    NZ 'over list'

    etc,etc

    Common all over the world.

It seems TH Franchise Dealers have only just caught on.

The Grey Market Guy's know all about though and often pay UK dealers a premium in order to secure new models early

OK, but are any of these are an accurate description of what's happening here? According to the post above, they agreed on a price with promised delivery date, then several months later "oh sorry, your car got exported, pay us 50K or we'll make sure it happens again" - or words to that effect...

My dictionary pops up with the word "extortion" as an English equiv. for the other Thai word I have in mind to describe it...

Profiteering is a very good text book equiv. thumbsup.gif

You might also want to add the term, 'Price Gouging', to your lexicon.

  17. Give up Mate, the Cheap Charlies are determined to put Your sound reasoning to the Sword.thumbsup.gif.pagespeed.ce.dtxKiAJ9C7.gif

You can leave syn in for 3 times more than min. BUT, the main thing is syn deals with pressures far more than min in that time. In the end the engine is happy, lasts longer.

    ^^^ Truly, a TransAm-esque moment for AOP! tongue.png

But how much longer is a lot longer? What is the estimated life of an engine using non synthetic oil? If the extended period of life does not benefit the original buyer or increase the re-sale value for the original buyer... Is it worth it for the original buyer to spend the extra cost? The cost quoted to me for synthetic oil, was aprox 2,000 thb more expensive So with oil change aprox every 4 months ... That is 6,000 thb extra per year or 30,000 thb extra over 5 yrs

That is the crux of the matter. My 2.2 litre has almost 300,000 km and burns no oil.

Will using synthetic make it last 3 times as long, due to oil change intervals being 3 times as long, and the oil being 3 times the cost ?

In a normal - make that non high-performance engine, I can not see the advantage.

Without a doubt synthetic it is a better lubricant, but I will use it in my hi-po applications only.

Synthetic oil protects and lubricates better than Mineral-based oils.

It's the 'when' (and / or 'whether') to use it that is, (once again), one of those decisions that is based on each individual's particular circumstances:

Synthetic oil is definitely for the demanding enthusiasts and those who look to keep their vehicular investment for the long run, but may not be the 'oil of choice' for those who intend to sell their vehicles at some point and/or are more concerned about their budgets.

This will soon all be mute as more and more mfg begin to require Synthetic oil to warrant their better performing engines. We just happen to be in a period of transition here and it's hard to get everyone on board ahead of the curve.

  18. Hi Transam

u were right. i went back home and opened the hood only to find out the wiring connector was disconnected.

The guy forgot to hook it back.

my car is smooth as silk now.

thanks so much for your help mate. You saved lot of my money.

before i used to use Shell engine oil. Then i changed to sports english oil recommended by my garage. Then i noticed i was not getting good mileage as before so i flashed it and got back to Shell engine oil (after using for 3 months, 5k km)

could that be a problem? however, when engine is hot, it seems to run okay but not as good as before.

Oil no problem. Sounds like cold start enrichment (choke) is not working. Might have a wire off. There should be a sensor on the air filter tube with a wiring connector on it. Check it has been reconnected or wiggle it about, disconnect and reconnect.
