Microscopic ‘Louis Vuitton’ bag sells for more than $60,000
If you’ve even a mild interest in luxury handbags, you’ve likely heard of the Chanel classic flap bag or the Hermes Birkin. But you’ve perhaps not heard of the Microscopic Handbag by MSCHF. At less than 0.03 inches wide, the teensy, tiny “Microscopic Handbag” by New York-based art collective MSCHF is so small that the human eye can hardly see it when it’s atop a fingertip. And, yet, it still sold for more than $60,000 at an auction this week. Neon green and made via 3D printer using 2-photon polymerization printing methods, the bag – which is modeled after Louis Vuitton’s famed OnTheGo tote – is viewable through a microscope. White House cautiously opens the door to study blocking sun’s rays to slow global warming
Wiki File Image The White House offered measured support for the idea of studying how to block sunlight from hitting Earth’s surface as a way to limit global warming, in a congressionally mandated report that could help bring efforts once confined to science fiction into the realm of legitimate debate. The controversial concept known as solar radiation modification is a potentially effective response to fighting climate change, but one that could have unknown side effects stemming from altering the chemical makeup of the atmosphere, some scientists say. The White House report released late Friday indicates that the Biden administration is open to studying the possibility that altering sunlight might quickly cool the planet. Fox News settles Dominion defamation case for $787.5m
More settlements from Fox. Fox News settles suit by Tucker Carlson’s former booker for $12 million Fox News has settled a lawsuit from former producer Abby Grossberg, who accused the network of tolerating a hostile work environment during her time as the chief booker for Tucker Carlson’s show, for $12 million. “While I stand by my publicly filed claims and allegations, in light of today’s settlement … pursuant to which I have now withdrawn those claims, I am heartened that Fox News has taken me and my legal claims seriously,” Grossberg said in a statement Friday afternoon. “I am hopeful, based on our discussions with Fox News today, that this resolution represents a positive step by the network regarding its treatment of women and minorities in the workplace.” https://www.washingtonpost.com/media/2023/06/30/abby-grossberg-tucker-carlson-settlment/

Canada's wildfire crisis: By the numbers
Canada's worst wildfire season ever Mike Flannigan, a veteran wildfire researcher at Thompson Rivers University, told Axios' Andrew Freedman that this year is Canada's worst fire season since reliable record-keeping began in 1959. In a typical year, fires burn an area about the size of Massachusetts. But this year, that area is already close to the size of South Carolina, Flannigan said. "If you live in downtown New York or Toronto or Washington, your place isn't going to be burned down from wildland fire," Flannigan said. "But smoke from fires thousands of miles away can make your life miserable." The big picture: Because of their size, locations and behavior, many of the fires are not expected to be extinguished anytime soon — whether by firefighters or a major shift in weather conditions — until after summer ends. CIA director, on secret trip to Ukraine, hears plan for war’s endgame
In preparation for the fall, Zelensky and top aides have begun thinking about how Kyiv can force an end to the fighting on terms that are acceptable to Russia and the Ukrainian people, who have been subjected to a year and a half of violence, forced displacement, atrocities, and food and electricity shortages. In an ideal scenario favored by Kyiv, Ukraine’s military would gain leverage over Russia by advancing troops and powerful weapons to the edge of Ukraine’s boundary with Crimea — holding hostage the peninsula that is home to Russia’s prized Black Sea Fleet. “If Ukraine has the capability to target additional important airfields, bridges, rail lines and logistics hubs, they can make it more difficult for Russia to sustain the war,” said Lee, the military analyst. In agreeing not to take Crimea by force, Kyiv would then demand that Russia accept whatever security guarantees Ukraine can secure from the West, said Ukrainian officials. UK to gain first lithium mine in Cornwall in boost to electric car industry
The UK is to gain its first lithium mine in Cornwall after a British startup agreed a deal with a French mining company that could supply much of the country’s need for the crucial electric car battery mineral. British Lithium has agreed to start a joint venture with Paris-listed Imerys that aims to extract 20,000 tonnes of lithium ore, the companies said on Thursday. The project is expected to employ 300 people and would produce enough lithium for 500,000 electric cars per year by the end of the decade. If it proceeds, it would require £575m in spending, according to a person close to the project. Antarctic sea ice at record low for end of June, warns Met Office
"At the end of June, the extent of sea ice should be building to a mid-point between the maximum and the minimum. "However, this year the ice is expanding very slowly with the consequence that the extent is way below the long-term (1981-2010) average. "The annual minimum extent in February 2023 was the lowest since satellite records began in 1979, just over one million sq km below the long-term average. "The current extent is extraordinarily low: it is in excess of 2.5 million sq km (965,255 sq miles) below average for the time of year."
