  11. Highland Park shooting person of interest left online trail of violent imagery Social media profiles show he performed as a rapper who went by the name “Awake,” whose recent music videos included depictions of mass murder ... Crimo also posted frequently to a message board that discussed graphic depictions of murder, suicide and death. His most recent post to that message board came last week, when he posted a video of a beheading. Crimo didn’t frequently post about major political figures on his websites, except for two posts about former President Donald Trump. A video posted to Crimo’s YouTube page on Jan. 2, 2021, appears to show Crimo among a throng of protesters cheering for Trump’s presidential motorcade outside an airport. Crimo flips the phone’s orientation to reveal his face at the end of the video. 13. Florida Gov. Ron DeSantis Public school teachers under the law are barred from engaging in classroom instruction related to sexual orientation or gender identity Florida’s Parental Rights in Education law — known to its critics as the “Don’t Say Gay” law — will officially take effect today. The measure has already had a chilling effect on public school educators, who in some cases have been instructed to remove LGBTQ+ Pride flags and photographs of same-sex partners from their classrooms to avoid violating the law. Republican lawmakers have from the start argued that the measure’s only intent is to empower parents. Democrats and LGBTQ+ advocacy groups say the law is intentionally vague and represents a huge step backward for equality. 14. A group of educators in Texas proposed referring to slavery as “involuntary relocation” in second-grade classes — before being rebuffed by the State Board of Education. The nine educators made up one of many groups tasked with advising the Texas board on changes to the social studies curriculum, which would affect the state’s almost 9,000 public schools. Minutes of a June 15 meeting in Austin, which lasted over 13 hours, said committee members got an update on the social studies review before giving their feedback. ... The State Board of Education mandates policies and standards for Texas public schools, setting curriculum rules, reviewing and adopting instructional materials and overseeing some funding. The board will have a final vote on the curriculum in November, according to the Tribune. 15. Migrant smuggler didn’t realize trailer’s AC unit failed, complaint says Truck driver was high on meth, officials say SAN ANTONIO — One of the men arrested in the deadliest smuggling incident in U.S. history told a government informant the air conditioning unit in the back of an 18-wheeler packed with migrants had stopped working without the driver knowing, according to charges disclosed in Texas federal court. Fifty-three people died after being trapped in the sweltering tractor trailer. Authorities said Christian Martinez, 28, sent the driver of the vehicle a text message Monday at 12:17 p.m. — nearly six hours before the migrants were found dead — purporting to show a truck manifest. The complaint redacts the driver’s name, but federal authorities have previously identified him as Homero Zamorano Jr., 45, a U.S. citizen. ... Zamorano appeared in federal court in San Antonio on Thursday for the first time since the grisly discovery of the bodies. He and Martinez are facing charges of immigrant smuggling resulting in death, which carry a maximum penalty of life in prison or the death penalty, in addition to hefty fines. They are among four men facing charges in connection with the crime. (more) https://www.washingtonpost.com/national-security/2022/06/30/texas-migrant-tragedy/

  17. Federal authorities announced on Wednesday that they had charged four men with human smuggling in the deaths of 53 migrants from Mexico and Central America who were found in a sweltering tractor-trailer in Southwest San Antonio on Monday, a gruesome discovery that has generated outrage in the United States and at least four other nations. The driver of the tractor-trailer, Homero Zamorano Jr., 45, was arrested Wednesday and charged with involvement in alien smuggling resulting in death. If convicted, he could face life in prison or even the death penalty. Zamorano, who is from Brownsville but now lives in Pasadena, a Houston suburb, abandoned the 18-wheeler on a semirural road near Interstate Highway 35 and tried to flee, officials said. He was “observed hiding in the brush after attempting to abscond,” according to the U.S. attorney for the Western District of Texas. 18. (CNN) In a setback for Florida Gov. Ron DeSantis and Republican lawmakers, a Florida judge has ruled that a new state law banning abortions at 15 weeks is unconstitutional and he intends to block it from taking effect on Friday. In a verbal ruling on Thursday, Second Judicial Circuit Court Judge John Cooper said he would be issuing a temporary statewide injunction that will go into effect once he signs the written order in the challenge brought by some Florida abortion providers. ... The state constitution in Florida includes a right to privacy, which the state Supreme Court has long interpreted as giving Floridians the freedom to access abortion without government intrusion. In his ruling from the bench, Cooper said the ban "violates the privacy provision of the Florida Constitution." (more) https://www.cnn.com/2022/06/30/politics/florida-abortion-law/index.html
  19. Another day, another disaster for Boris Johnson. Senior Conservative party lawmaker Chris Pincher resigned Thursday after allegedly getting drunk and groping two men at a private members club in London. “Last night I drank far too much,” Pincher wrote to Johnson in his resignation letter. “I’ve embarrassed myself and other people which is the last thing I want to do and for that I apologise to you and to those concerned.” Pincher relinquished his job as Tory deputy chief whip—a figure responsible for party discipline—but is astonishingly set to stay on as a lawmaker, despite howls of protest from the opposition. 20. Secret Service agent Tony Ornato prepared to testify against claim that former President Donald Trump lunged at steering wheel, sources say Rep. Adam Kinzinger, R-Ill., claimed Thursday that a Secret Service agent who may testify before the Jan. 6 committee about the timeline of events that unfolded around former President Donald Trump during the riot "likes to lie." Two Secret Service agents, Tony Ornato and Robert Engel, are prepared to testify before Congress that then-President Donald Trump did not lunge at a steering wheel or assault them in an attempt to go to the Capitol during the Jan. 6 riot, a source close to the Secret Service told Fox News' David Spunt this week. The explosive new allegations were made on Tuesday by Cassidy Hutchinson, a former top aide to Trump White House chief of staff Mark Meadows. A series of social media posts accumulated this week in which colleagues and opponents of Ornato have accused him of failing to tell the truth in the past and being a habitual liar. 22. Finland hasn't received deportation lists from Turkey, says minister Finland’s foreign affairs minister said his country had not received any new requests for deportations of Kurdish rebels, saying all cases had already been solved, after signing a deal with Turkey in order to join NATO. The country agreed along with Sweden to process Turkey’s “pending deportation of extradition requests of terror suspects expeditiously and thoroughly,” a vaguely worded pledge that has raised fears the Nordic countries gave in too much to Ankara's wishes. But Finnish all potential deportations would be subject to strict EU law standards, Minister for Foreign Affairs Pekka Haavisto told Euronews. “We are not changing our legislation in Finland. Sweden is not changing its legislation. We agreed on some cooperation between our authorities, but we are following our own laws regarding human rights,” he said. 23. The president of Turkey is leveraging Sweden and Finland’s desire to join Nato to further his interests abroad and at home The relief was palpable but short-lived. On 28 June – the first day of Nato’s summit in Madrid – Turkey signed a joint memorandum with Finland and Sweden, signalling that the objections of its president Recep Tayyip Erdoğan to the Nordic nations’ proposed membership had been resolved, and that he would no longer block their accession. The Nato secretary general, Jens Stoltenberg, and state leaders, including Boris Johnson and Joe Biden, hailed it as a pivotal turn that would both bolster security in Europe and strengthen the alliance. Finland and Sweden, after decades of military non-alignment, looked to be on the verge of joining Nato – a decisive blow to Russia and a moment of unity for the alliance. Yet that unity now appears to be a mirage: on 30 June, the final day of the summit, Erdoğan reversed course, announcing that unless Sweden extradited 73 people that Ankara has deemed to be terrorists, the accession “would not happen”.
