  1. I'm not concerned with the cost of the rice but am really confused over her need to cook such a large batch of it all the time. Our daughter no longer lives at home and there is only the two of us yet she insists on cooking a arge batch of rice every day sometimes every other. I have tried to explain that we only eat so much rice but it seems to make no difference. Any one else ??

  2. It certainly would make acessing govt. sites easier. As far as invasion of privacy? If you think that you visited whitehouse.gov without them gaining every digital scrap of who you are where you've been , what you look at and search for on the internet boy I got some ocean front property in Indiana I want to sell you.

But if your looking for a browser that will keep more of your information private take a look at Epic Privacy Browser

  3. Ok maybe my post are confusing because i really don't understand this situation too well. There is only my friend working with no permit just to confirm. So now there is a mix of opinion. I am not going to tell the authorities. I just want to threaten the school with something to get them to cough up for the overstay which is their fault. The school promised visa assistance and now the employee is looking at a 20,000 fine because they did.t renew their visa like all the other schools seem to do without any problem. Thanks for the help so far guys i'm not trying to screw anyone over, i just want things to be sorted in a fair manner

    >> OK so with all the confusion aside. Most likely nothing will happen to the school. Your friend however will be looking at charges for illegally working in Thailand which will result in additional fines for him/her as well as the risk of deportation and or jail. Geez with friends like you who the f * # $ k needs enimies.

  4. A question for you. kindly explain what the British tax payer should fund a jolly for the three of you?, suggest if you can't afford it, don't buy it !

Thanks for your unhelpful suggestion. You obviously have nothing better to do than to moan on forums.

Well sais nonthaburial, For marty827, If you can't afford to go for a year don't go, why should someone else pay for you and your children to lounge around the UK for a year?

  5. he's lucky the local reds didnt try to beat him up but then they only do that to women as they dont hit back. How pathetic is it when you are accused of something because you are wearing a whistle, these people are idiots.

In many civilized countries, you could be considered pathetic if you did nothing but walk around the street all day for months blowing a whistle, while supporting an anarchist that has nothing better to do but paralyze traffic, occupy and damage state property, insult the country's poor, try to escape from a corruption and murder trial and who wants to establish a communist-like "people's council" and wants to get rid of elections.

Now, tell me ...how pathetic is THAT?

And you kiss the asses of a convicted fugitive on the run and his government full of convicted criminals. How pathetic is THAT ?!

    tingtongteesood;

I agree Thaksin may not be the best. But I wouldn't bet my last dollar on that conviction being totally legitimate. Don't forget he was convicted in absentia while outside the country when a coup d'état took place to oust him from power. By the same people who now want to deny elections by the way.

    Full Definition of COUP D'ÉTAT

: a sudden decisive exercise of force in politics; especially : the violent overthrow or alteration of an existing government by a small group

And in this case I do emphasize the word SAMLL , meaning less than a majority able to win an election. Instead of hating the winners, maybe they should look at why they keep loosing.

Democracy isn't perfect there is always a winning side and a loosing side. It is an adversarial system by nature.

Pathetic is defined as a person who expresses an opinion outrageously on something that is of no concern to him/her and which he/she has no influence whatsoever.......thumbsup.gif

    You must be confused:

    Full Definition of PATHETIC

    1
: having a capacity to move one to either compassionate or contemptuous pity
    2
: marked by sorrow or melancholy : sad
    3
    : pitifully inferior or inadequate <the restaurant's pathetic service>
    4
    : absurd, laughable <a pathetic costume>
    pa·thet·i·cal adjective
    pa·thet·i·cal·ly adverb
    Examples of PATHETIC
    1. The blind, old dog was a pathetic sight.
    2. The team was pretty bad last year, but this year they're downright pathetic.
    3. The story he told was a pathetic attempt to cover up a lie.
    4. His car is a pathetic piece of junk.

I must first sort of apologize I am never this forthcoming in any posts anywhere but this deserves it and I just couldn’t hold back.

    Your the idiot.

How can you be in support of ANYONE who wants to take out a duly elected govt. (and by a sweeping majority I might add, not just a close vote but one that was determined to be a LANDSLIDE VICTORY)

And replace with people whom are selected and determined to be “good people” and yes that is a direct quote from Suthep who is even now conducting interviews to determine who these good people to lead the country are, that HE and HIS COMMITTEE shall select.

Perhaps I should refer you the definition of democratic and democracy because you are obviously confused, ignorant or illiterate. In any case it is OK to be ignorant but it is not OK to remain that way.

    See Here for Democratic: http://www.merriam-webster.com/dictionary/democratic

    And Here For Democracy: http://www.merriam-webster.com/dictionary/democracy

And For Ignorant ig·no·rant: adjective \ˈig-n(ə-)rənt\

    : lacking knowledge or information

: resulting from or showing a lack of knowledge

    See Here: www.merriam-webster.com/dictionary/ignorant

How in the world is that possibly even anywhere close to democratic? I’m sure that they were IGNORANT when they chose the name “PDRC-Peoples Democratic Reform Committee” but again they don’t have to remain that way. They could rename the themselves “PSRC-Peoples Socialist Reform Committee” or "PCRC-Peoples Communist Reform Committee" that would take care of thier obvious display of ignorance.

And as for Suthep himself, he’s just an idiot. How did he think the US Ambassador would or could possibly react when asked. Was he hoping the US Ambassador would say “Oh yes, we support democracy and elected governments every where in the world , except in Sutheps case in Thailand. Certainly we believe whole heartedly he should install the government of his choice and the people of Thailand should be grateful to him for doing so” The Ambassador was not interfering or any other way interfering or supporting either party. She was simply stating the US Policy that Democratically elected governments are ALWAYS ALWAYS ALWAYS PREFRERED.

  8. Education reform has clearly to start with failing students. Those who fail have to repeat the year, if that doesn't work, they'll have to build schools for kids with "special needs' and therefore they'll need qualified teachers as well. F A I L E D.

Those students should be able to ask questions if they didn't understand an assignment. Even high school students are not allowed to ask questions, as the educator might not know the answer. F A I L E D.

How comes that most senior students at Universities can't even put a simple sentence together in English, after having around 13 years of :studying English"?

    F A I L E D.

Those Thai teachers teaching English should be qualified enough to speak in the language they're teaching. A flight attendant has to pass a TOEIC test, while many Thai English teachers would fail.

    Teachers can lose face. F A I L E D.

And that goes on and on and on. Teaching is an occupation that creates all professions. -wai2.gif

I couldn't agree more starting the final exam with a 50% is no way to grade students. But other things need doing as well. One of the worst things I think Thai students do is simple memorization. They memorize whatever is being taught without having any concept of what it is about.

Ever have a kid tell you good morning at 7 PM,

That's what they memorized in class.

  9. Why does every country that has a problem turn to USA either to blame or to ask for support. How come I never see then ask China or Russia or India. I think American citizens are pretty sick of being the police of the world. This is a problem of Thailand and it needs to be settled in Thailand. I feel that Yingluk is a poor leader but she was democratically elected and must finish her term unless she commits a crime and is impeached. We were stuck with Bush but he was legally elected and was allowed to finish his term as god awful as he was.

I agree 100%. I think most of the yellow shirts are a bit confused about what a democracy is. When your unhappy with the election results you can’t keep throwing the winner out of office and install your own Government expect the people to be happy about it and still call yourself a democracy.

If they are unhappy about loosing they should take a look at why they lost and see what they can do to gain the peoples trust and popularity instead of trying to oust the current leadership who as you said was democratically elected. And by an overwhelming majority I may add.

As for Bush, not so sure he was LEGALLY elected the first time round., that just shows the problem with our electoral system of electing our leader.

  10. Thailand

The age of consent in Thailand is 15 (with the below caveat) as specified by article 279 of the Thai Criminal Code. The current legislation applies to all regardless of gender and/or sexual orientation.

However, parts of the Prevention and Suppression of Prostitution Act, which disallow any sexual contact with prostitutes under the age of 18, are widely interpreted by some local authorities to cover sexual acts classed as "obscenity for personal gratification". Also from the Penal Code Amendment Act of 1997 Section 283bis, having sex with a child under 18 is a compoundable offense even with the consent of that person. The parent or the child may file charges against the other side if he or she later regrets his or her own action. This ostensibly makes the Thai unfettered age of consent 18.

A high profile example of this application of the law was a statutory rape charge filed against the lead singer of the Thai band Big Ass for allegedly having had sex with a (then) 16-year-old girl. The charge was filed by the girl after the singer refused to take responsibility for her baby. The singer has since been cleared of being the baby's father due to the results of a paternity test and he received 2 years suspended sentence.[73][74]

However Thailand in 2002 has joined the international community in passing laws againnst consentual / non concnesentual sexual realation with a person under the age of 18 as a crime technically making the age of consent 18.

So 13-17 as a foreigner your taking a shot in the dark, my suggestion , Don't do it.

  11. You as a foreigner are not deemed worthy eonough to own land in Thailand. (there are a few ways around this corporate ownership etc...)

You can however own the home, I know that sounds ludicrous but it's true. You can own the house but not the land it sits on. Any way with that said.....

a solution is for you to buy the land in your wifes / gf's name. Have here give you a 30 or 90 year lease on the land for a few baht per month while of course mentioning in the paperwork the reason for the low lease price was that in fact you did pay for the land in the first place.

You may then build your new home in your name alone, jointly whatever you like.

There is a legal firm in Los Angeles that has offices here in Thailand that can handle all the paperwork for you. I only mention that because lawyers in the US have a slightly better set of rules they have to follow in representing therr clients than if you hire a Thai lawyer directly. And if problems later arise it would be the American firm with it's lawyers here representing you. That could be a + or -?

    Good luck

  12. A system backup and restore onto a new computer is probably not a good idea.

    1. Because the system you are using now is a laptop and has a mobile processor albeit an Intel chip or an AMD chip, as well as depending on what your using to backup with. For example if you are using what is built into Windows they are not always backward compatible with the newer operating system. e.g. 98-XP, XP-win 7 64bit etc….

    2. There is the driver and operating system incompatibility issue especially if for example the laptop you are using is Intel based and you are buying an AMD based computer or 32 bit OS to a 64 bit OS as well as the different type of hardware.

    3. If you are buying the computer here in Thailand the likelihood of you getting an Operating system CD or method to build your own is likely nill so if something goes wrong you would have no way to recover.

Transferring your data (pictures, video music, documents etc…) is a straight forward process easy enough you should be able to do yourself with no problem. Just copy onto flash drive and paste into your new documents folders. One thing many people forget about when transfering data are Internet shortcuts, saved passwords for websites and some other minor things.

Programs on the other hand may be a bit tricky if you are using some specialty programs, e.g. Quickbooks or some such something, if not the computer you buy here will most likely have most of the software you need MS Office (most likely bootleg), video players, music players and many others. If it does not, check out this link for plenty of free software. http://ninite.com

Other recommendations A. Clean off the spyware that will come with the new computer, you could use Adaware, PCdecrapifier available here http://pcdecrapifier.com/ or Spybot for that. B. Install either Avast or AVG anti-virus software, available at the above ninite link. The new computer will come with one can’t remember the name but I’ve cleaned up a lot of computers for people because it does not work well and in some cases it’s the pro version but bootleg so the update feature is disabled or will not work

Subject us social security survivor benefit for Thai wife

Most of the answers on the forum were incorrect.
Actually due to many international agreements your Thai wife is entitled to either a lump sum death benefit or monthly payment death benefits. Whether she was ever in the US or not. As long as your marriage is both legal and registered with the US Consulate. I know of two Thai woman never having been in the US receiving benefits. One is getting monthly death benefits and the other's children receive benefits as he *the American" was their father. It is certainly most helpful if you make arrangements for this before your demise or if she knows someone in the US that will help her apply and receive the benefits.

See here on the US consulate page

    http://chiangmai.usconsulate.gov/service/u.s.-federal-benefit-information.html

You may also contact the SSA in the US directly for information on how to ensure your wife gets the benefits she is entitled to.
