Of course the reds are going to cause chaos in January. Everyone knows this, and everyone knows why. Its D Day for Thaksin in regard to his money. It won't work, and will just end up turning more people against him.

can you still be an MP with a criminal conviction?
No.

I see Newin has announced he will not continue in politics, after Apisit's sterling performance he probably realizes he would look so second rate.
In the last election the Democrats party list vote was very near to PPP, in the next it will probably be a lot higher.
Thaksin was thrown out because educated people realized what an autocrat and greedy man he was. The demonstrations and coup were widely supported by the middle class.
If the reds want genuine democracy they have to get rid of Thaksin who never ran his own party on democratic lines.
What policies have they been proposing to help the poor over the last year?
It's fruitless to compare Thai politics with the UK, what would have happened in the UK if Richard Branson had started a party and 70 MPs defected wholesale to his greener pastures? The public would have been outraged, but that's what Thaksin did to the NAP and nobody cared.
In the last election, the Dems party list was higher then PPP.

More to the point.

I do know that Abhisit has acted with measured calm during this whole incident, and he is a hel_l of a lot more dignified in a leadership position than Hun Sen or Thaksin ever were.
Thailand is better off having him at the helm.

Although I am not a Thaksin fan (lol) I cancelled the Nation several years ago, in favor of the more bland Post. At least the Post tries to mask its hatred and contempt for Thaksin. In the Nation, it is dripping from the first page to the last.

If Hun Sen doesn't like Abhsit, then my respect and admiration for Ab has increased. Hun Sen is a a Khmer Rouge death merchant and merits no consideration as a respectable leader.

Nice group of red shirts attacked a government minister today - article is in the BKK Post. These guys are scum, and those who support them are the same.

I am of mixed feelings about this. Relieved that the reds are being denied an opportuntity to use violence, but angered that a small minority can use the treat of violence to dictate the schedule of the Prime Minister of a country. They say that it was the Thai Chamber of Commerce who revoked the PM's invitation, and if that had not happened, he would have gone.
In any event, if the Reds cannot provoke a violent confrontation in the next month - Takki Shinegra lose all chance to get his money back - stay tuned.
(Thaksin has denied ever using the name Takki Shinegra and says that he certainly doesn't have any passport in that name. Can you verify the source of your information?)
In the Bangkok Post today it says "the invitation was withdrawn after chamber chairman Dusit Nontanakorn talked with key members." On Radio Thailand news they read a statement from Abhisit saying that he had cancelled his plans to visit Chiang Mai because of his fears that a demonstration could harm the country's economic recovery?
You use the term "small minority" but that kind of statement is the root cause of the present problem because it is 'the majority' of Thais who want Abhisit to resign and call elections. Abhisit was never elected and the chances are that he never will be. He assumed the office of Prime minister after a large number of MPs (led by Newin Chidbob) defected from the Opposition to join his Democrat party. (Why they defected is an open secret - and it wasn't because they suddenly saw Abhisit as the Saviour of Thailand)
Abhisit's silence during the siege of Suvarnabhumi gave tacit support to the PAD and in fact he made one of the leaders of the occupation of the airport his Foreign Minister, the same man who referred to the PM of Cambodia as a gangster long before the present spat between Cambodia and Thailand.
In the UK, because of the way he became PM and the way Newin Chitbob and his friends deserted the people who elected them,
Abhisit would have been honour bound to call elections within months of assuming office. But he did not do so and in fact during his recent visit to the Middle East he stated that he might call a general election within the next two years!
I am not a Thai but just somebody observing from the sidelines - as you are - so I have no axe to grind. However, I think no matter what the consequences unless Abhisit does call an election the feeling that they have been robbed of their vote will grow and fester amongst, what I believe to be, are the majority of the Thai electorate.
What will happen then? Will the current Thai Foreign Minister be back on a stage at Suvarnabhumi Airport, will the Army stage a coup, and will you be writing in to defend the right of a "small minority" to govern the country?
No plans to argue with a "newbie" member. I'll all come out in the wash.

"Since his exile, Thaksin Shinawatra or Takki Shinegra or whatever he calls himself has become a master of disguise," said Interpol. According to the agency, since 2007 Thaksin has traveled around the world using no fewer than 14 aliases, including "Tex Sheen" in the US , "Taal Shienweiss" in Israel , "Aksim Szchenewassad" in Egypt , "Toxeus Shinawapoulus" in Greece and "Tocque Zinne J'ene Veauetreu" in France .
Police were still determining whether passport holders Thakslav Shinawatov from Russia , Thaksiano Shinawati from Italy and Dak Shinsson from Finland are also Thaksin aliases.

Anyway, it's useless for Cambodia to negotiate with this government. They are aggressive, want the war, do not negotiate frankly then do not keep their words.
Abi and the yellow shirt Kasit are useless and childish.
Just let's wait a real government.
No, no, I'm not a Taksin supporter. Not at all.
Cite examples that the government "Wants war". And do not keep there word.
I'll wait....

I do think Cambodia is playing with fire. Becoming an ally with an active fugitive revolutionary Thai leader associated with violence is indeed an act of aggression against Thailand. What did they expect? A sensible neighboring government would have remained entirely neutral in a soft civil war type conflict if they didn't wish to get involved. They have taken a side, it is their right; however, there are consequences. Welcome to the real world.
I agree. The worst case scenario is that Thailand could administer the Cambodians a military lesson they'll never forget.Last time (1987/8 border dispute) a smaller neigbour, Laos in that instance, faced the military might of Thailand's army...oh well perhaps on reflection that's not the best example since the Thailand army got a bloody nose.Oh well you get the general point.
Who is talking about military actions. Economic disassociation will hurt Cambodia far more. Frankly I dont' think worsened relations with a warlord like Hun Sen are all that much to cry about. The man is up to his neck in death from his Khmer Rouge days.

Most educated Thais that I know consider him a traitor...
A traitor to the wealthy upper classes who have exploited the less lucky for centuries.
Thanks for the jaded CM perspective. Don't you have some ping pong ball explosives to make?

Lets face some fact here, as far as Takki is concerned it's not about the money in terms of value, probably not even about absolute power again - it's about saving his square "FACE" after it has been dragged thru the mud on a couple of occasions.
No - its about the money. The man has no shame, no face, just unmitigated greed.
-
On the front page of the "newspaper that must not be named" - there is an article in which Thaksin declares that he will call off all protests, if he is allowed to be spared a jail sentence.
All of you strong Red Shirt for Democracy! people. Your groups financier just said that your groups cries of "Democracy" are full of crap. He just said that he controls the protests, and that the protests are about and for him. Congratulations - you are all suckers. At least Takki Shinegra is honest.

Takki Shinegra
It looks even better in giant red letters.

I imagine the fuel surcharge only applied to expats, who each weight as much as 3 Thais put together. Its actually is fair if you think about it.
That being said - its a 4 year old post. Who gives a crap about this anymore?
