  1. Siam Reap Airways is a good airline (basically Cambodian Bangkok Airways), though not very cheap...the other airlines, I don't know, I wouldn't take my chances with an AN-24 over Cambodian skies :D

I haven't tried the boat, but it doesn't seem to be worthwhile in terms of time/features/price, I think the optimum price solution is bus/shared taxi as described in the above links...it's worth checking out Phnom Penh before going for an early start to Angkor the next day, it's a great town!

    thanks!

looks like there is no easy way to get there apart from bangkok airways... :o

btw - you meant checking out siem reap and not phnom penh, right? as p.p. is not really near angkor ...

  2. You might also consider flying to Pnohm Phen and then by boat or inland flight to Siem Reap.

    Cheaper than Bangkok Airways.

    cheers

    onzestan

just checked - 2,500 baht return!!

has anyone done that by boat? how long will it take from the airport?

    whats a good inland airline?

    thanks

  3. If a baby if born in Thailand and the parents are not Thai...whats happens?

The parents will receive a birth certificate, but the child is not Thai.

    i can second that.

It is then up to the parents to go and register the child with the embassy of the country(s) which the parents are citizens of to register a child of that nation. The child is permitted to stay in Thailand, as children under 7years (or is it 14?) are allowed to remain here and not be charged/penalised for overstay.

it says 14 years in my sons passport - and he has been in and out of thailand without a visa (or problem) many times.

you should register your child with your embassy and get a passport - how would you leave the country (or come back) without?

  4. this is what the letter says that immigration send me with my last 90 day report's confirmation receipt:

"Documents to notify of staying longer than 90 days by registered mail:

    4. PHOTOCOPY OF THE LAST ENTRY STAMP

    5. ORIGINAL OF RECEIPT OF NOTIFICATION (IF ANY)

    6. ORIGINAL OF YOUR NEW 90 DAYS REGISTRATION FORM. DON'T FORGET TO SIGN YOUR NAME (TM.47)

    7. A STAMPED, SELF-ADDRESSED ENVELOPE TO RECEIVE YOUR NEW RECEIPT (10 BAHT STAMP ATTACHED)

    PROCEDURE:

    SEND REGISTERED MAIL (EMS) TO:

Important: Your document can not be processed if you have passed the 90 days limit. You must come to the nearest immigration office or room 206 Immigration Bureau in person to pay fine 2,000 baht.

To receive a blank registration form, send a stamped, self-addressed envelope to the address above. Request form TM.47

    IMMIGRATION OFFICER TEL. 02-2855142"

i think it could hardly be any clearer and easier and it appears it is perfectly ok to send your report by mail from anywhere in thailand. i live in nakhon pathom and have been sending it to suan plu and so have other people i know of from petchaburi. why not request the form tm47 and see if they will send it to whatever place you live. anyway, if in doubt, i recommend trying the phone number!

  5. i understand, with the new visa rules it will not be possible to extend my work permit for a CONSULTANT position

anybody else who is affected by that has a solution?

there must be real consultants out there who will have to leave now... unless finding a workaround

i am only bringing this up with my employer now - looks like the obvious option will be to change my follow-up contract so that i will continue consulting while my contract will state teaching or something else that i am not... ?

i can see that immigration wants to stop people exploiting the regulation but me thinks they should rather go and make checks instead of forcing real consultants to a not-quite-legal state - not fixing the problem at all :o

  6. ania,

please return and post your findings here!

i was in a similar situation two years ago (but until today never got a sufficient answer) and i will be again from next year.

that time i tried to get a dependant visa since my wife (also a farang) was holding a wp from a big university. the officer just laughed, saying that it is impossible, for "we believe in thailand the man should support the woman"

although he was for different reasons obviously talking rubbish it didnt help my case a bit...

i eventually got hold of a position and wp for the same uni, but since it is a "consultant's" wp, thanks to the new law it will most likely not be extended end of this year....

  7. Hundreds of foreigners stuck on the closed Myanmar border

PHUKET CITY: -- An Immigration officer based in Ranong confirmed by telephone this morning that it is still impossible to make “visa runs” to the Burmese port town of Kaw Thaung, across the bay from Ranong.

The officer, who said he had no idea when the border would reopen, suggested visa runners whose permits-to-stay are set to expire consider using crossings along the borders with Malaysia, Cambodia or Laos instead.

He recommended first checking with the foreign affairs ministries of those countries before starting out, however.

“It is beyond our authority whether Immigration officials in neighboring countries choose to close border checkpoints,” he warned.

A few hundred foreign tourists remain stuck on the Myanmar side of the border since the checkpoint closure, he added.

Myint Than, operator at the Andaman Club resort and casino complex on Thahtay Kyun Island in Myanmar, also opposite Ranong, this afternoon confirmed that the border checkpoint there remains closed.

“We don’t know when it will re-open,” she told the Gazette.

    --Phuket Gazette 2006-09-21

    am i missing something?

the article never said it was visa runners who got stuck in burma...?!

as far as i know: if you decide for the optional walk into burma when on a visa run, you are not supposed to leave the place anyway and have to go back to thailand the same day

(that was the case in myawaddy/mae sot, might have changed.)

i reckon these "100s of foreigners" are mainly tourists travelling SEA who could simply not cross into thailand

visa runners will be the lads that get stuck on the thai side of the border, right?

that might explain, too, why we dont hear from any of the few 100s that got stranded in burma, on this forum...?

  8. Shouldn't we change the title of this thread to "World Cup NOT On TV".

    Where the <deleted> is it...???

Moaning about the cost of the TV rights and they don't even show the f*cking thing!

celebrations are over - its on now!

  9. Thailand, Singapore, Myanmar, Indonesia, Malaysia, etc. all seem to try to maintain a logical and chronological order.

more or less chronological, i agree. but when i was getting a non-immigrant visa for thailand in frankfurt last year, they sticked it somewhere right into the middle of the empty pages. too busy looking for the "right" page (or anywhere close) i reckon...

  10. something pro-active to PREVENT people from running into problems in the first place????? All it seems I'm hearing is what they will do to the farang AFTER using the boat... the Immigration folks got things backasswards....

ah, come on: if anybody really cares about following visa rules, its not hard to smell the scam...

but if you dont care anyway, why should immigration (or anybody else) want to hold you back...?

thailand is not disneyworld thank god - if farang is stupid (and ignorant) enough - tuff shit

    ** sigh **

That's the same attitude that puts the blame onto the 2 murdered British tourist in Kanchanaburi themselves.

    Your self-absorption is very disappointing.

sorry, but if you want to blame all the scoops in (visa)life on immigration alone just like a little kid... maybe thats what you need to grow up :-(

  12. been to immigrations in bangkok today with a similar setup: my wife-to-be-from-next-week (german, 30y, non-b, work permit with respectable uni) and me (german, 32y, non-b, no regular job) went to the office to find out what to do to have my visa changed to non-o.

heres what the macho-officer said: "get a job and work permit before your visa runs out. thailand is a mens country - we expect the man to support his wife and not the other way around!" :D - :D - :o

    just felt like sharing it...

    @ doc

will i have to take my (then) wife with me outside the country to apply for a non-o? she is expecting and our baby will be born within a couple of weeks, so that isnt an option really... or will her paperwork (incl. copy of wp) do?

  13. your airline will be responsible to take u back home if thai immigration doesnt permit you into the country. apparently some of them dont want to take the risk:

technically this could happen, as there is a law that requires you to have an outbound-ticket but it is not enforced, meaning: immigration will not ask you to show it. this is especially true if you are flying in with a valid visa (=entry permit) already. showing sufficient founds to avoid getting stranded in thailand should make the officers happy - a valid credit card usually does the job.

but all that wont help if the airline wont let you board in the first place... maybe try checking with their superiors if obtaining a visa upfront is good enough for them?

    good luck!
