  1. I presume you are on Koh Pha Ngan, in that case you can apply for a skippers license at the Marine Department Office on the Seatran pier opposite the Seatran ticket office.

I know several ferangs who have obtained a license at this office, however they will want to see some proof of previous experience with boats, and more than likely a work permit depending on the circumstances

Go and speak to them they will give you all the pointers

    Good luck

  2. I had a monkey for a while, local hunters killed its mum when she was very small so I adopted her. I did not want to put her in a cage so I let her live with the family in our house. Very cute initially, but a complete handful as she got older. Unfortunately she got run over and died.

The local vet told me that when they reach puberty they become very destructive indeed.

After my first experience I certainly would not have another one

  3. I'm looking to buy a truck for my new job I start this week. It involves driving around the island a lot. If I did this on my motorbike I can see my life expectancy decreasing rapidly!... I also need to carry equipment around so a truck is ideal.

The OP does not need to be berated about global warming she has stated a perfectly valid reason for buying a truck.

I wonder which of you have aircon at home?

    Cinders go for it!

  4. coupled with a natural talent for coming up with amazing excuses to explain how it happened.

Spot on, Some of the excuses I have heard have either left me with my jaw touching the ground, or laughing out loudly.

  5. Q. I saw goods marked at a price in a shop but when I took them to the till to pay the shop refused to sell them to me saying they had the wrong price on. Can they do this?

    A. When a mistake like this happens, the trader is not obliged to sell you the goods at the lower price. He is entitled to withdraw the goods from sale until the problem is rectified. You cannot insist on buying the goods at the lower price. However, if the trader tries to charge you more for the goods than the advertised lower price, then a misleading price indication could be given, which is a criminal offence. If this happens and you are not satisfied with the trader's explanation of how it happened, then let Consumer Protection know

The above taken from Halton Borough Council UK on line Trading Standards Dept.

So better for me in future to say nothing at the checkout if I spot a mistake, pay for the goods at say a higher price and then take it up with the store manager after the transaction, cause I now have more leverage as they have commited a criminal offence.

  6. Apologies if my post did not make sense, English has never beeen my strongest subject.

The consumer protection act (UK) guarantees that the store will give you the item at the cheaper price ie if the shelf price is 100 baht but when scanned in a the checkout it rings up 1000 baht the store has to sell you the goods at 100 baht,

  7. On the way out, I remarked to the gf that it was often the custom in Europe, that if an item was wrongly priced, then the store would normally give you the item at the cheaper price as a sign of goodwill, before adjusting the shelf price. However, I'm quite aware that this rarely, if ever, happens in Thailand.

The consumer protection act guarantees that this happens in the UK and that the store can get big fines.

  8. Hi Cinders,

I would have thought that you will pay a premiun by buying a truck on Koh Samui, If I were to buy a truck I would try and buy one of a friend or colleauge whereby I know the history of the truck.

Alternatively a trip to Suratthani can be a good way of working out the going rate for 2nd hand trucks, there are lots of used dealers on the Suratthani ring road between Big C and Tesco Lotus, armed with this information you may be able to strike a good deal on Koh Samui.

Please let us know how you go on

    Good Luck

P.S have heard very good reports from people who bought second hand trucks through expat motors in Bangkok, and then brought them to KPG

  9. Sorry to her of your loss, I have watched two of my dogs die due to poisonig.

In the case of one of my dogs I dont think it was intentional, I think some one had been trying to poison rats and the dog came accross the bait and ate it.

On another occasion my neighbour decided that my dog had been killing his prize fighting chickens, so he just came round to my house and shot it with a rifle in front on me and my family. Could not really do much.

As far as the police go they have no interest in protecting dogs from being killed, or doing anything about it after the event.

  10. The British magazines rate the smaller but very similar CBR125 at 12 or 13 horsepower, so I wonder about the estimate of 22 bhp.

By British law these machines are restricted to 12 Brake Horsepower as anything below 125cc is considered to be for learners, I know of people with full motorcycle licences who have had similar 125cc bikes unrestricted and managed to get 18hp so I guess 22hp from 150cc does not seem unreasonable.

When I have some spare cash I will treat myself to one of these wonderfull machines.

  11. You could always try Ang Thong National Park, in between Surat and Samui, where 'The Beach' was filmed (the actual beach), although this is now probably overrun with farangs on day trips since that was filmed.

I always thought The Beach was filmed on Koh Pi Pi much to the expense of the local enviroment, whilst Alex Garland's book The Beach was inspired by Koh Pha Ngan and Ang Thong Marine Park.

  12. There are some wonderful quiet beaches along the coast between Prachaup Kiri Khan and Chumphon, I stayed at one 4 km or so north of Bang Saphan, sorry I cant remember the name, It had good acomodation and mainly Thai holiday makers staying there, therefore the prices were very reasonable.

  13. The question is, when some one is in love and has MGGGS, is it possible to enlighten them before they loose their life savings?? Because normally now I do not say anything, because I believe a man in love can be told nothing.

I was always believed in giving advice to people on two occasions.

    1 When it is reqested

2 When someones life is at risk

So in the case of some one being bled dry I would only give them advice if they asked me for it. Most people my self included do not welcome unsolicited advice.

  14. i dont know what construction worker you are reffering to. basic staff in construction are about 100-150 baht per day.

higher skilled such as carpenters or electricians can get 200-250 maybe even 300.

a shop attendant that speaks english can have a starting salalry of about 6-7k.

I think construction worker rates are higher than this,

    try

labourer 200 baht + per day

semi skilled 350 baht + per day

skilled 500 baht + per day

    foremann 600 baht+ per day

Correct I think this one should be moved to General Topics

  16. Like I said yesterday on another thread, try riding in on a motorbike, two people, in the rain, in sandals but wearing decent, simple clothing. Show respect for the wait staff without waiing them, behave yourself, order the regular stuff on the menu, and think of something humble to say, such as "I'm just a simple teacher of English." Show that you notice prices, even making a show of it "kaow phat gai, sow baht, nga?" Then go home and clip your bond coupons.

I think I would rather be over charged
