One of the prerequisites calls for the government to define clear and effective measures to be put into practice to control and monitor infections and to make sure that all stakeholders will cooperate fully to improve the situation, which will build confidence among the public and tourists alike.

    Hahahahahahahahahah

From a country than can't even place an order correctly for vaccine delivery.

And for every negative MAY there's a positive one. Temperature checking CAN be an effective way to stop spread.

I have NEVER had my temperature checked in the USA when entering buildings, restaurants, offices, retail stores, or anywhere else.

Just like the "face shield" *AND* mask requirements in the Philippines.

When we continue to pile on more rules and requirements, people stop caring.  Philippines is the perfect example of stupidity run wild.  This is the country that required people driving to the mall in cars to leave every other space empty in the parking garage ... social distancing at its best.

The point is -- temperature checking is not an effective way to stop the spread.  Ask any expat who sweats their ass off walking or wearing a helmet on a motorbike and then can't get into the store or mall because they "are hot".

"Temperature screening for coronavirus disease 2019 (COVID-19) is thought to have little down side, but in practice it does little to prevent the spread of the virus."  NIH

Well, but now here's the question:

Where to take the vaccines from?

Thailand's soldiers ordered them too late and even the wrong ineffective ones.

They ordered Biontech. Astra, Moderna or Johnson.

However, there is a long way to go between orders and deliveries.

    Maybe early 2022 if you're lucky ????

Yes, but we are not allowed to talk about *WHY* the government "ordered too late" ... had the Thai government budgeted the money immediately and starting buying when other countries did -- we would see a different vaccination level in Thailand.

As I said before -- why is it that people with the money to pay for whatever vaccine they choose are STILL NOT ABLE to get vaccinated?  I think the story is telling ...

  4. I have been a part-time Pattaya resident for 20 years.  Yet I have only been to Phuket once as it didn't interest me.

If I were to return under the sandbox program, I don't know what hotels would be on my suggested list.  I have seen prices range from 10,000 to 283,000 baht for the 14 nights.  My budget would range 40-100,000 for the two weeks (obviously willing to spend less if something fits the bill).

My interest would be resort style pool (possibly with beach access); relatively easy to get around and find some street vendors -- plus a restaurant on site that has quality food.  Preferably room with view.  I know bars are closed, etc. so that isn't a factor at this point.

Please don't reply and tell me to look at the SHA+ website.  I am interested in reading replies from people who have personal knowledge and suggestions.

What hotels would you suggest based on your experience?  As an alternate, where would YOU stay?

    Hotels that caught my eye:

Sunwing Bangtao Beach - but 25 minutes to phuket downtown

    Double Tree by Hilton

Dusit Thani Laguna Hotel (oops!  "Dusit Thani Laguna Phuket is no longer operating as an ASLQ.")

This is Agoda's "hurry up and book message".  Does anyone believe it?   Hahaha

Thailand's tourism minister Pipat Ratchakitprakan as saying that the much vaunted opening of Phuket under the "sandbox" no quarantine scheme will not happen on July 1st.

  6. I was going to post a question asking if anyone had any ideas about types of visas and other rules that would be in effect for the Phuket opening ... but then I found this:

    Quote

This for one means that the procedure of having to apply for a Certificate of Entry (with the existing requirements such as $100,000 insurance cover) through the local Thai Embassy / Consulate is still going on even under the Sandbox model. It can take quite some time to receive this certificate so any short term travel to Thailand is officially out of the question.

    Quote

International tourists who wish to visit Phuket will however need to fulfill a long list of requirements, including having proof of being fully vaccinated against Covid-19. They will also need a Certificate of Entry from their nearest Thai embassy, and will be required to take a number of Covid-19 tests while on the island.

    Oh boy.

Thats not a direct flight from the US as I was talking about, that is a transit flight ...

Thanks for the reply.  I did understand you .... but then became confused because there are no direct flights from the US to BKK (and haven't had for a long time, as they aren't profitable) ... so of course, there could never be a direct flight from US to Phuket.

There aren't that many people that will be going to Phuket IMO.  I might be one of them, but I don't expect to see full flights.

  8. Just now, ThailandRyan said:

Looks like you can now transit through BKK instead of flying directly to Phuket, as how else would the US folks arrive as there is no direct flight to Phuket anymore from the US.

Although I agree, that it is great that we can transit through BKK, there are now flights directly to Phuket.  Star Alliance is flying from Germany; so it is US to Germany then Phuket.  There are others ...

"Doha, Dubai, Singapore, Taipei, Istanbul, and Hong Kong. Thai Airways International says it will offer scheduled flights from Frankfurt, Copenhagen, Paris and London."

As of June 1, vaccinated individuals can go to Phuket without quarantine or need for a PCR test. And hotel rooms are cheap.

so, yeah, I might give it a try, even before July 1.

    Flights BKK-HKT are 1000 baht.

It is my understanding that only those travelers who fly DIRECTLY from another country to PHUKET are allowed.  You are not allowed to transit through BKK.

If you are in Thailand now, weren't you always able to fly to Phuket??

UPDATE:  There is an update posted on another thread that says transit through BKK will now be allowed!!  Richard Barrow is the source.

    ALSO:

There is a national rule to close all pubs and bars. Phuket won’t be allowed to be an exception to this rule.

Common Side Effects from Moderna Vaccine.

The most commonly reported side effects, which typically lasted several days, were pain at the injection site, tiredness, headache, muscle pain, chills, joint pain, swollen lymph nodes in the same arm as the injection, nausea and vomiting, and fever. Of note, more people experienced these side effects after the second dose than after the first dose, so it is important for vaccination providers and recipients to expect that there may be some side effects after either dose, but even more so after the second dose.

This info is from the US FDA .

I had a sore arm - the same soreness I got for the last 20 years of flu shots ... NOTHING ELSE.

  11. This is nothing new

Does anyone remember when you could ride your motorcycle or car with spouse to the local restaurant, but you were not allowed to sit together?  For a while it was ONE person per table -- even children were sat separate.

Or this one from the Philippines.  You weren't allowed to ride a motor-taxi without a shield.  Even though you had a full helmet, with mask on ...
