Agreed. Go there for what?
I'm still in no hurry to return. My wife (educated, dual citizen) believes that what the Thai government is doing about Covid is good (I don't, but I continue to pester her to explain to me how destroying the economy is ok). They had one confirmed case with the Eqyptian and the entire country lost its mind! Imagine if tourism opened! OMG.
I sent her the Thai road accidents report yesterday ... 7414 dead, 38 yesterday vs 58 all time Covid deaths. And I asked her how does she reconcile that? She can't answer -- she is caught up in the moment that "we must have NO Covid infections at all costs" or we all die.
And it truly is, "at all costs", IMO.- 12

I hope you are wrong, i think there must be an answer.. The government should invest heavily in infrastructure, yes it costs but it will pay back and move the country forward.. i think preparing the country for post pandemic and aiming to crush the SE Asia competition is the only way, at least the only way i can think of.
Infrastructure? You mean like the sewage plant that spews filth into the water by the beer bar on Beach Road? And a sidewalk that smells so bad tourists must hold their nose to get to Walking Street?
I won't hold my breath.

7 reasons that will kill the return of tourists... Good luck resorts hope you survive until next year.
Is that really a bad thing? Expats have complained for years that there are too many tourists and tour buses ... First it was overrun with Russians (hence little Russia on Pratamnak) and then it was the Chinese with the buses and organized tours where they follow the lead duck.

How many of us are going to sit-it-out?

May I ask you to verify that your letter has Covid-19 wording?
I'm with Cigna also but the letter they sent me just shows an evidence of coverage for all reasonable medical conditions, no specific mention of Covid-19.
btw what is the country of your policy?
Cigna expat confirmed by email that hospitalization due to Covid was covered and they sent my dec page again showing HOW I am covered -- but as you said, the dec page doesn't mention Covid specifically and I didn't ask for a custom letter from them. I would think that is what you would need to do.

Not necessarily ... I checked and mine didn't have any of that "If you need to be hospitalized for anything, you are covered".

I posted this before, so I am repeating myself. Happens with age.
As I type this, I am in the USA, where I have been since January. My January USA trip was expected to be two months. After Covid hit, I thought I would return to Thailand end of July; and then end of August.
I've been living in Thailand since I married in 2003, although I was a frequent visitor prior.
My insurance actually covers Covid hospitalizations (confirmed through the company). But I do not have any interest in returning to Thailand in the foreseeable future. I miss my wife terribly, but we video chat twice a day and I can live with that for a while.
The thought of the restrictions, tracking, visa issues, checkpoints and overall insanity, encourages me to stay in the USA and work. I never thought I would choose to stay longer in the USA than necessary -- but I also never thought a pandemic would exist is my lifetime.
I feel for those of you who are dying to return to Thailand. I wish you the best.

There is a number of beach hotels/resorts that charge 20,000 + baht per night...and obviously cater to high end tourists.
But I think that a large number of their customers are wealthy Thais, and not foreign billionaires...
I was thinking about that ... we used to dine at the Centara Grand Mirage Beach Resort (Wong Amat), which rented for hundreds of dollars USD per night at one time. We noticed two types of customers: Wealthy Russian; and wedding parties from wherever. It seemed to us that they kept the hotel relatively full.
Pattaya-Jomptien-WongAmat are not designed for wealthy tourists IMO, especially older wealthy tourists. Splurge tourism, yes. But I think pursuing the wealthy travelers is a pipe dream.
I also wonder about the amount of money REALLY put into the economy from the different types of travelers. Payments to bar girls don't ever seem to be part of the "estimated daily spend" that TAT uses to sail its idea of higher class of tourism.

With all that is going on, I wonder if there are that many people "rushing" to return to Thailand?
I haven't seen my wife since January, but I'm not dying to return and jump through all the hoops and then be under the various restrictions and quarantine.
Plus, I know that once I get to Thailand, there will be no side trips for quite a while. I think I will just sit it out here in the USA.

I haven't been in Thailand since January and consequently, haven't seen my wife or dogs since then.
But is anyone else not in a hurry to return? I'm still in the USA with full freedoms; eating in restaurants; not having restrictions and checkpoints.
Work has separated us for long periods before, and this is another one of those circumstances beyond our control. I have NO interest in going to Thailand so that I can pay 50,000 for quarantine -- AND not be able to go "out".
You??

I too want to go back to pre corvid but I think its still too early.
Meanwhile, people starve to death and lose their businesses and homes that they worked their entire lives for.
Thankfully where I am in the USA, the government has figured out that they MUST open.
We are now in Phase 2, 50% capacity for dine-in restaurants, spas, nail salons, and hair care as well as all retail open again. No dramatic spike in cases. In fact, all across the US, the temporary Covid hospitals have been dismantled.
The only people here in the US who think it is "too early" are the ones collecting $995USD per week in unemployment. Less than one out of three customers wear a mask. One out of three customers will use sanitizer upon entry.
It is NOT too early.

All those people on the 5000baht a month program would probably enjoy a holiday......all be it a brief one.
Really? You mean some people are receiving the money? Last I heard -- you must have a bank account; and you must be able to prove employment (even if a maid for cash; or a seller at the market).

Don't discount the value of domestic tourism. If the article is true, locals spend is almost half of that spent by foreigners. Fact 76% of tourists in Hua Hin in 2019 were Thai. Average hotel rate 4k a night. Domestic tourism also puts more cash right back into the economy.
That is true ... look at the domestic tourism around SongKran and the Music Festival in Pattaya. That is substantially Thai.

They show animals with NO ONE around to care for them. They took video of buying the food and feeding the animals.

They never closed markets down, people live day to day outside the cities where the majority are going to be, little point hanging around in the city when they have no work! there not going to intentionally starve people, surely you don't think they would go that far, hungry people will do horrible things!
According to my wife just outside of Buriram city, the local markets where she usually buys food items, cooked food, and vegetables are CLOSED.

Remember Purachai back in the taxin days? Anutin must be trying to out-do him.
If the govt declares the bars in Pattaya must shut down, stick a fork in it and say goodnight. Property prices will crash, businesses will close and throw people out of work, and crime will increase. Maybe half the locals can take up rice farming again...
I can't believe this is even being considered an option. Govt MIGHT be able to pull this off for a few days or a couple weeks, but if it's longer or indefinite, forget about it.
Angeles City shut their bars and clubs down effective today for at least two weeks ... I don't see how they will survive either.
Once Pattaya clubs shut down, I can't fathom the effect. There are 50 times as many bars and clubs in Pattaya as Angeles City.

It is more than that however ... it is about power. Everyone you read about here -- talking about keeping the borders locked down -- continues to earn a paycheck regardless of the countries woes.
I have posted this before: Thai people are convinced that the government is doing the right thing by keeping the borders closed. "We don't have Covid here".
But it is not just Thailand; Philippines is experiencing the same thing.
