Dunno - luckily I only needed to get home.  I have no idea how long the service was eventually down for.  But there would have been a massive knock on effect as trains from behind would have been totally full for a while.  No trains leaving Suvarnabhumi either (although the trains were working in the other direction obviously after our one stopped there would have been a lack of trains making the return journey).  At rush hour on a Friday too, lovely.

Outstanding effort by the SRTET tonight.  About 6.30pm tonight our train to Suvarnabhumi stopped at Ramkhamhaeng, people got off, people got on, doors closed.  Of course it was packed but that is not unusual - everyone managed to squeeze on.  After five minutes we hadn't moved and the doors opened again.  15 minutes later we still hadn't moved, the platform was getting busy.  After 20 minutes the security guards told us to get off the train.  We all got off, then the train drove away.

Not once in the whole time was there a single announcement or explanation of what was going on - what the delay was, how long it might be, or why, eventually, we were being asked to get off the train.  Nothing over the intercom (the electrics were still working - aircon and lights were fine - and so was train operation as it drove off after it was empty), nothing from the station staff and guards, not a word.  Things can go wrong but they should at least inform the passengers but literally not a single word from anyone.  After 20 minutes I left and went to find alternative transport so I don't know how long people were stuck for in the end.  What was amazing though was the patience of the Thais.  Not one person moaned, but also not one person asked what the heck was going on.

I'm not one of the ARL haters - I think it provides an excellent service.  But the SRT / SRTET really need putting out of their misery.  No standards, no training, no pride.

No they don't.  People do not get run over on the hard shoulder in the UK.  Firstly, if you break down you pull to the hard shoulder and get out of your car and off the hard shoulder.  Secondly, trucks and cars never ever drive on the hard shoulder to undertake or to use it as a shortcut if there is traffic.

It is tragic but there is no education about the dangers here.  Remember the policeman getting killed by the actress when he pulled over for a nap on the motorway?  

As Scorecard says, call them on 02 645 5555.  I have done it many a time to cancel a lost card, they speak English, then you can get a new card at any branch - Just take your bank book and passport.

I also agree that the Union Pay card is useless.

I came through on Thursday.  Absolutely empty and through in a couple of minutes.

Does anyone know if this is available through the Fast Track security / departure area?  If travelling out business class do we need to use the standard (queue-tastic) regular security and check in?

You can get a work permit and work with a non-o visa based upon marriage.

You will find it difficult to get a non-b visa without a work permit application approval letter.

Thanks for the quick reply.  I'm going to be away next week and back on the 17th so I'll get another 90 days from then.  I may have one other trip just before the UK which would give me almost another full 90 days after the UK but not sure yet.  So I'd be able to get a re-entry permit at the airport and maintain what's left of the 90 days?

I didn't know you could get a WP on a Non-O, that's interesting.  My money and my income is now in Singapore so may be better to apply there rather than London?

And sorry for the questions, but if I go for another non-O would you recommend switching to a non B when the company is established or does it not matter?  Only when I have had non B's in the past they've always been 12 or 24 month with no requirement to leave, only do 90 day reports.  But with the non O I only get 90 day entries each time.  Is it possible to get a multi entry non-O that gives you a year at a time without the 90 day entry restriction?

HI all,

I have lived here on Non-B's and had continuous WPs for 22 years.......until last year.  I now work for a company in Singapore and travel a lot but they allow me to spend time here when not travelling as I have wife and kids.  I got a 12 month multi entry non O (based on marriage) in Singapore last year and it expires on 13th June.

I am currently working on a BOI application on my company's behalf as we are setting up a new office here which I will run.  Once we (hopefully) have BOI and a registered entity I will then be employed here and get a Non B and a Work Permit.  But I don't expect this will happen for three months at best as we are only submitting the application some time this month.

What's my best option to cover the gap?  Is it possible to apply for a non B based on "exploring a business opportunity" without having a company here yet?  I'm thinking if I can get a three month multi entry non B it should cover me until we have a business registered then I can do an extension and WP.  I am travelling to the UK (I am English) on the 13th June so timing wise if I could apply for one from there it would be perfect.  But don't know if this is possible.  I don't really want to do another non-O as I will be spending time here doing the application, interviews and refitting a building etc. and travelling less.  I certainly don't want to do any visa exempts.  Just don't know what's best.

Any advice gratefully received.

What a ridiculously pathetic thread of replies, even for TV.  Someone actually drowned in that cesspit of a khlong.  And someone jumped in to try and save them which is pretty heroic.  But none of that here; just petty squabbles, some latent racism and lots of nonsense, how sad.

That is what tourist encounter upon arrival at Swampy:

- waiting up to two hours at immigration

- then proceeding to the Taxi counter and wait for another 30 minutes sometimes

- then being told by the Taxi driver that the 20 Km ride to downtown costs 800 Baht and no Meter will be used

- then jumping out of the Taxi exasperated to use the ARL instead

I fly in and out very frequently.  I have never waited anywhere near two hours at immigration.  Flew in today and the queue was all the way out of the snake and down the ramp.  It took 40 minutes.  40 minutes is still way too long but two hours is ridiculous.  Quite often - more often than not in fact - I am through in less than 5 minutes.

Taxi queue is normally very quick.  Never waited 30 minutes, ever.

I have never ever, not in any of my trips through Suvarnabhumi since it opened, never been ripped off by a taxi or had one that didn't use the meter.  Not once.

Never jumped out of a taxi exasperated to use the ARL.

I totally agree the ARL is very overcrowded at peak times and unacceptably so - I use it for commuting most days - but an exasperated tourist boarding at the airport will most likely get a seat.  It gets busier and busier as it goes down the line.  Also agree that the SRT management is the worst in Thailand and utterly incompetent.  But please cut out the melodrama.  All your post was missing was the "final nail in the coffin of the tourist industry" line....

In my experience, Thai/Thai Smile cannot issue tickets for the other, even if the trip is booked as a single itinerary. Along these lines, I have never been able to get bags checked through between the two, and I have Gold status with Thai, so if it were possible, they should have done it for me. 

If you go to the TG website you can book a single ticket right through from KK to LHR.  Even though the domestic leg is Thai Smile surely they can offer you a single itinerary as Thai Smile is a wholly owned subsidiary.  I can't believe they can't check your bags all the way through.

I am pretty sure bags would be checked all the way through from KK to London but you would need to clear immigration and pass through security again in Bangkok.  This wouldn't mean exiting and checking in again but using the transfer counters.  Would be interested to hear from the OP is this is/was the case (I am not saying this is definitely correct).
