  1. Anyone catch anything on last nites Thai TV news about another car in the CM Klong again???

I saw this on FB with pictures of a car in the Khlong. From the garbled Google translation it seems that farang guy went in and saved three people. Kudos to him!

  2. They haven't been that since the 90s.  Fortuner (Forerunner in the US) switched from the bodyon frame design used in pickup trucks to the unibody design in 1996.  They've been moving more and more towards soccer mom kid and grocery mobile ever since.

Incorrect. They are very much still a body on frame vehicle. And - personal opinion alert - generally driven by the most aggressive and inconsiderate tail-gating light-flashing drivers in Thailand.

I think you will find it cheaper to get a new sim and data package

whenever you fly into a new country. There are vendors in the

airports just before you exit the terminal. Easy peasy lemon squeesy.

    Hi Ulic,

Yes, that would definitely be cheaper but I need to keep my Thai number active to receive calls.  I don't really want to have to start carrying two phones with me either.

    Cheers.

Might want to take a look at AIS sim2fly, I use it whenever I travel abroad.  It's not unlimited but significantly cheaper than their roaming package.

    http://www.ais.co.th/roaming/sim2fly/en/

The 899 THB is good for 15  days and gives you 4GB of 15 days in most European and Asian countries, Australia and the US.  Alternatively they also have the Asia/Australia plan for 399 THB for 8 days. The sim itself is valid for 90 days, and just need to top it off to keep it active.

    Hi Arkom,

Thanks for the link - I had never heard of that before.  Indeed it is much cheaper than their data roaming packages.  But it effectively gives you a new number so does it effect your WhatsApp account, Viber, Line etc?

  5. "Old paper licenses can be exchanged for the new ones at a cheaper rate from today."
What old paper licences. I'v had the plastic credit card size type  for the last 14 years?

I've had plastic ones for maybe 15 years but before that they were laminated paper ones. My wife got her first license about five years ago and that is laminated paper.

Not sure why the difference but there you go...
  6. Only if you're Thai, if that was a farang they'd be in the Bangkok Hilton like a shot facing several months and a million Baht fine.....

When was the last time you heard of a farang being thrown in Bang Kwang for a having a knife in their car (that wasn't wielded or used)? I would guess never. And being fined a million Baht? Seriously?

Some TV posters really need to get a grip. Yes, it was a crazy incident but why bring this paranoia into things that farangs would have ridiculous punishments for the same crime? They wouldn't.

  7. HI all,

    I currently use AIS (have been with them for over 10 years) and I travel a lot for work so am spending a lot of money buying data packages per country for each trip.  I am looking instead to have a monthly plan that includes unlimited data roaming wherever I am.  I have called AIS and they offer the following that works across 159 countries;

1,990 baht per month: 450 MB

3,990 baht per month: 950 MB

4,990 baht per month: 1.2 GB

If I don't travel one month and don't use data abroad then they will waive the fee that month.

Ideally I would like an unlimited data package though.  Does anybody know if True or DTAC offer this and what the costs are?  I am not in Thailand at the moment so can't call them or visit a shop and don't see that information on their sites.  I have emailed but am not hopeful of a response.  Any first hand information greatly appreciated.

    Many thanks.

Do you not get handed a fast track voucher by the stewardess ? I have on B.A., Eva, Emirates, KLM...always fast track for years now.

If I fly economy I get excellent service from:

    http://www.limousine.in.th

about 2k baht for golf cart to the fast track lane from plane. Was 100 meters once which was funny , but usually a really long walk from docking gate.

I just spent three weeks in the UK and having read about the long queues recently I didn't want to take any chances on the flight back with two kids with me.  I used www.limousine.in.th for the first time.  I have to say the service was excellent; although our plane had trouble parking in the bay due to some issue with the electronic guidance system and we were towed out again and in to a new bay, the representative was there at the new gate before we were, waiting with the golf carts.  It could have gone wrong at that point but they were on top of it.  Straight through immigration, they collected our bags from the carousel then walked us out straight to a waiting, spotless, Outlander which was driven very professionally and courteously to my house.  It just so happened we could see there were absolutely no queues at the normal immigration line but hey ho.  I'll definitely use those guys again next time I travel with the family and I happily recommend them.

Also, BOI company employees (with a letter) and ABTC card holders.

Although it says you need a letter I have used this privilege 20+ times and have never been asked to produce the letter (I don't have a letter).  They just check your visa and that tells them all they need to know.

  10. While the BKK experience is less than stellar, I'm not sentimental over DMK...recalling the extraordinary jams to/from, really from late seventies right through to the time BKK opened. Two hours from DMK to town was pretty average, could be three on a bad day/peak. Outbound was a nightmare at anytime after 6.30am. Add to that the slow immigration and it was usually a frustrating experience.
At least now the traffic flow has improved.

Yep, I've never really understood the sentimentality for DMK other than the usual TV posters whinging that things were better in the old days and romantising over their younger days.

Don Muang (old spelling) was a terrible dump. It was a nightmare to reach and return from - especially before they extended the toll way. It had awful facilities. It had awful carparking. Taxis were a nightmare. It was just terrible.

I gladly pay extra now to avoid it.

If terrorism ever comes to Thailand in a big way, people forget that it takes some sophisticated and expensive weaponry to bring down a flying plane.  All it takes to crash a train is a guy with a $50 cutting torch.  Air transport only really needs security at each end.  Tracks are vulnerable along the whole line.

That's a really excellent point, best not to go ahead with it.

Also best we don't build any more bridges because they are vulnerable to terrorist attack along their entire length.  Just one bomb under any of the support pillars and there you go.

Also roads; just a single bomb placed on a road could take out several cars at once.  We should cancel all roads too and just fly everywhere.  It's the only way to be safe in this terrible world of doom that you live in.

No Thai visa at time of application, I had been using 30 day visa exempt for past 10 years.

    Hi again,

I entered Thailand on 16th June but only got stamped entry permitted until 13 September.  I was expecting to get a year's allowance.  Or with this visa do you have to go in and out of the country every 90 days?  I'll be coming and going a lot more often than that, so will I just get permission for 90 day's stay each time?  Any idea?

    Thanks.

  13. Can I ask if you had any sort of Thai visa at the time of your application?  Or you had none?

I have been here 22 years on Non Bs as I have always been employed.  My visa will be cancelled this week as I have left my job and I'm moving to take up a new job in Singapore.  My wife and kids will stay in Bangkok so I will apply for a multiple entry Non O in Singapore.  Unfortunately I didn't get time to sort it out here before I have to leave.

OK I would be of the same opinion myself. But as you know this is Thailand. Anybody that's actually done it feel free to comment. As it happens she is applying for an Australian Tax File Number as well as opening  a bank account (a secondary purpose to the visit which I have previously discussed here). So if I pay the Embassy's ludicrous fee of $70 to certify each document I could lodge the application on her behalf when I get there get the TFN quickly and perhaps avoid some hassle from the bank later. As I park at the Airport anytime I go to Bangkok I will try and sort out the credit card thing before catching the train to the Embassy and if necessary the Thai ticket office in town. I will report further.

I have done it at the airport ticket office (BKK), not a problem.

  15. Hi all,

Does anybody know if Ikea are doing real Christmas trees this year?  I bought one last year but I don't see anything on their website about them.  I don't want to trundle all the way down to that godforsaken place only to find they don't have them.  Anyone been recently or have any info?

    Cheers.
